FPCCI asks Indian counterpart to stop opposing Pakistan in WTO

Senator Ghulam Ali writes letter to Indian counterpart

Dated: June 30

Islamabad: President Federation of Pakistan Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FPCCI) Senator Haji Ghulam Ali has asked The Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FICCI) to support Pakistan get World Trade Organisation (WTO) trade concessions.

In a letter to Harish C. Mariwala, President FICCI, Senator Ghulam Ali, who is also Vice President Islamic Chamber of Commerce and Industry, said that India's help will help foster trade ties between the two neighbours.

India has been opposing trade-concession package offered by the European Union to Pakistan, but is also blocking a move to be counted as a Least Developed Country (LDC) at the WTO, the letter said.

The President of FPCCI further said in the letter that Pakistan says it is an LDC because of the setback to its economy on account of natural calamities and the war on terror. As an LDC, it merits to be eligible for EU concessions which India disapproves that may spoil bilateral ties.

"India should not try to harm friendly ties which are being normalised through hard labour," said Senator Ghulam Ali.

He asked Mariwala to use his good offices to stop India from opposing concessions to Pakistan.

India should no more be in the forefront of a group of nations opposing the move aimed at benefitting Pakistan's economy.

'Mohali spirit,' should not be dogged by the traditional mindset as the visit of Prime Minister Prime Minister Yousaf Raza Gilani, his meeting with Indian counterpart Dr. Manmohan Singh and recent commerce-secretary level talks have help melt ice but the confidence building measures are once again being threatened, Senator Ghulam Ali said.

He asked FICCI to play role to shun misgivings and ensure an environment that benefit both the neighbours.

"India should be happy if Pakistan get a concession that can boost our ailing economy as a stable Pakistan is also in the New Delhi's interest," the letter concluded.

Strong economic relation between China and South Asia can add to global economic growth and Pakistan and Xinjiang can play central role in connecting China and South Asian economies. This was stated by  Tariq Sayeed, patron-in-chief Pak-China Business Council and immediate Past President of SAARC CCI and FPCCI at Kashgar-Central & South Asia business Cooperation seminar held in Kashgar city of Xinjiang province of the People' Republic of China.

He was invited by Chairman CCPIT to address the seminar, which was organized by CCPIT Xinjiang sub-council. The seminar was inaugurated by  Yu Ping, Vice Chairman CCPIT, Beijing, and H.E. Masood Khan, ambassador of Pakistan to China.  Tariq Iqbal Puri, CEO TDAP and  Marat Sharshekeev, President, Chamber of Commerce and Industry of Kyrgyz Republic also addressed at the inaugural session, which was moderated by  Wang Kelin, Chairman CCPIT of Xinjiang sub-council. The business representatives from CII India and national chambers of Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, and Turkmenistan also addressed the 2nd and chairpersons of CCPIT sub-councils from Hubei, Sichuan, Shaanxi and Yunnan province also spoke during the 2nd plenary session.

Sayeed said that the city of Kashgar had unique topography, which has been the connecting point of China-South Asia through Silk Route operated even before 200 B.C. He praised Chinese Export Policy and efforts of the visionary leadership, which had transformed the nation into the leading export nation with worth of $ 1.3 trillion and the second leading economy of the World and expressed optimism that China shall become soon global economic leader. "The South Asian countries particularly Pakistan should take the maximum benefit of Chinese economic growth"

He further said that China and South Asia formed almost 47% of the world population and the presence of numerous complementarities could integrate two great civilizations. He hoped that the present level of trade $ 75 billion between China and South Asia would be doubled by 2015 if the targets set by Governments of China, India and Pakistan are achieved. In this respect he urged for the need of compatible infrastructure development and fully operational of Silk Route and Sikkim trade.

"Over the past five years, Xinjiang has taken advantage of its geographical location to strengthen economic links with neighboring countries and explore markets in central Asia, western Asia, south Asia and Russia.  This has helped significant improvement of over 320% in Regional trade, which was estimated at $ 76 billion in 2011 against $ 24 billion in 2005" said  Sayeed and added that the expansion of highway system and improved transportation network would not only help further increase in trade but also channelize FDI in the region.

Women in New Media - The Voice of Youth (tVoY)

The Voice of Youth, an online student community, has utilized Social Media to convey a positive image of Pakistan to the world, apart from the one that we get to hear daily in our news headlines. A female student of National University of Sciences & Technology (NUST) established The Voice of Youth (tVoY) on June 26, 2010. The aim was to cultivate relations with students belonging to different strata of life. But behind this obvious reason, there lay a deeper reason – that is, to create a forum where the youth of Pakistan could mingle and enrich one other by their perceptions and views.

tVoY, under the leadership of Momal Mushtaq, has always come up with unique and creative ideas to fascinate its users. On June 10, 2011 tVoY initiated a group ecard through Groupcard.com. The birthday card received response from youngsters and adults alike from all over the country with over a hundred pages filled with wishes! Today, tVoY proudly celebrates its first birthday online with its thousands of Facebook fans and a hundred plus representatives from forty different institutes of Pakistan.

tVoY is a living example of a young Pakistani woman who utilized Social Media to establish her presence. In matter on one year, tVoY has grown out to be one of the largest student blogs of Pakistan. tVoY has worked to bridge the gap between its own population, particularly the youth, by uniting it under a single platform and to work for one collective progression. With Ali Suleman serving as Head Publications, tVoY has transformed into an interactive and vibrant student community from a simple blog. The Voice of Youth has utilized technology to achieve financial sustainability by offering its services to student organized events as a social media partner.

The future holds more such opportunities for women to come forward in the field of New Media, to lead and to innovate.
