BOYCOTT ISRAELI DATES

BOYCOTT ISRAELI DATES: BACKGROUND

In 2004 the International Court of Justice ruled that the Israeli settlements are illegal – they are built on stolen Palestinian land. Growing dates is one of the major agricultural activities carried out by nearly half of the illegal Israeli settlements located in the Jordan Valley – it's their most profitable crop , and contributes significantly to their economic viability.

Picking of the dates is hard work, so the Israeli settlers bring in Palestinian laborers to do this back breaking work. During the pruning season the workers are dropped on the date palm trees by a hoisting crane at 5 o'clock in the morning, left perched on palms that soar to a height of 10 or even 12 meters – the height of a three- or four-story building, left there swaying in the wind for up to 8 hours without a break and with no means to come down until the crane returns at the end of the day, the workers cling to the tree with one arm and work with the other to meet their quota. They can't even take a break to go to the toilet. If they complain or fall behind their quota they will lose their jobs and their families will starve.

But the Israelis prefer to employ children – even issuing them official work permits, as they are quick and light, can climb trees faster, work for less and it's easier to cheat and humiliate them. Out of desperate poverty Palestinian families are forced to take their children out of school and hand them over to the settlers to work for a pittance.

Most of the Israeli date crop – up to 80%, is exported, mainly to Europe where it has around 10% market share. In 2005, dates were Israel's leading fruit export.

The two major Israeli companies involved are Agrexco and Hadi-klaim.
Agrexco, half owned by the Israeli government, handles 60-70% of all goods produced in the illegal Settlements. Its dates have brand names Carmel, Jordan Plains and Jordan Valley. Last September, a week before the start of Ramadan, Carmel boasted in their press release that they had managed an early crop of dates in order to meet the Ramadan demand for dates from Europe's Muslims!

Hadiklaim sells 65 percent of the all dates produced in Israel. Its dates have brand names King Solomon and Jordan River. They also supply Israeli dates to supermarkets and retail chains who market them under their own brand names. These include Marks & Spencer's, Sainsbury's, Tesco's, and Waitrose.

http://img20.imageshack.us/img20/7237/datese.jpgSainsburys Medjool Dates - produced in the illegal Israeli settlement of Netiv Hagdud in the West Bank

Sometimes they are labelled "produced in the West Bank" – this just confirms they are grown in the illegal Israeli settlements.

Peace activists who visited the Palestinian village of Fasayl in the Jordan Valley last year discovered that villagers are slowly being forced off their land by the Israeli army. The only livelihood left open to them is to work for Carmel Agrexco. The activists even spoke to two Palestinian workers whose land had been stolen and were forced to work for Carmel in order to feed their families – they had a message for the peace activists, a plea for anyone who would listen – they urged them to take action against Carmel Agrexco and such companies that support Israeli apartheid. What excuse is left for us not to boycott Israel? If you oppose the illegal settlements target their dates. Boycotting can make a real difference.

BOYCOTT ISRAELI DATES: CAMPAIGN

Innovative Minds and the Islamic Human Rights Commission are calling on campaigners to create awareness in their communities about the boycott of Israeli goods, and in particular Israeli dates, this Ramadan.

In order to educate our communities on this issue two videos and a leaflet has been produced.

"Zaynab's Story" explores the connection between an ordinary person living in Britain and what is happening in Palestine – how our actions as consumers in this country effects what happens to the Palestinians. It's a heart wrenching video which exposes the brutality of the occupation as it touches the lives of ordinary people in Palestine. It then traces exactly how our buying habits help sustain this occupation, and ends by exploring ways in which we can start supporting the Palestinians. The boycott of Israeli dates forms its central theme. Its premier both in this country and overseas has been very well received. It duration is 36 minutes, and its available both as a DVD, or as a downloadable AVI for screening in a mosque, community centre or student society, and as streaming video on Youtube for personal viewing.

ZAYNAB'S STORY - A CALL TO BOYCOTT ISRAEL

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YN-YGoZK0i4

"Boycott Israeli Dates" was specifically created for screening at venues with time restrictions which would not permit the screening of "Zaynab's Story". It duration is only 18 minutes, and concentrates solely on the boycott of Israeli dates. It is available both for downloading (hi-res AVI) or streaming (low-res Youtube).

Please help us reach the widest possible audience by making copies of the videos, DVDs and passing them to your friends, placing them on your websites, etc.

Boycott Israeli dates leaflets can be obtained by contacting the Islamic Human Rights Commission on 02089040222. Alternatively the original PDFs used for printing the leaflets are available for download should you wish to do your own printing ( rough guide to printing cost in the UK: 10,000 leaflets £125 inc delivery ).

We have also produced a sample letter to give to local grocery shops, greengrocers, etc. that serve the Muslim community. The letter politely asks the the shopkeeper not stock Israeli dates this Ramadan. Only one letter, with perhaps 3-6 people signing it, needs to be given to each shop (along with a leaflet which identifies the brands to avoid).

Dear Shopkeeper,

Greeting of peace,

Please spare a few minutes to read this important letter, thank you.
As a customer of yours I wish to draw your attention to something which is very dear to my heart and I am sure to many of your other customers and hopefully to yours as well, namely the plight of the Palestinian people.

For 60 years now they have lived under brutal Israeli occupation, their land stolen from them, their homes demolished and their children murdered in front of their eyes. The United Nations has condemned Israel on many, many occasions, and the International Court of Justice has ruled the Israeli settlements are illegal - built on stolen Palestinian land, and those that lived through the horror of apartheid in South Africa have described Israel as practising a much worse form of apartheid than thing they suffered under. And yet despite all this, the oppression continues, nothing changes.

It is now left for us ordinary people to put pressure on Israel by boycotting its goods, by boycotting the fruits and vegetables it grows on land stolen from the Palestinians. It is in this endeavour that I humbly urge you, as your customer, please do not help oppress the Palestinians by selling Israeli goods, in particular please do not sell Israeli dates this Ramadan. Every year just before Ramadan, Israel especially targets small retailers who serve the Muslim community in to stocking its dates. The included leaflet lists which brands of dates are Israeli and should be avoided, it also includes details of the suffering Palestinians undergo in the production of these dates. This Ramadan please think of the Palestinians.

Thank you

A Determined Chief Justice: A Defiant Prime Minister

By Saeed Qureshi

The tug of war now apace between the Supreme Court of Pakistan and the Prime Minister Gilani and the PPP government is for divergent purposes. The Apex court under the chief justice Iftikhar Chaudhry with a fame of absolute propriety is determined to uphold the rule of law. On the contrary, prime minister and some of his ministers are entrenched to thwart the Supreme Court's decisions and rulings that involve such of their close kith and even themselves.

For instance prime minister's own son Abdul Qadir Gilani is one of the culprits involved in the huge Haj scandal. The principal character in that abhorrent scam is the former Minister for Religious Affairs Hamid Saeed Kazmi charged for money-laundering, corruption of mega scale and gross mismanagement for the pilgrims.

The prime minister was incensed when in accord with the Supreme Court's orders; the secretary establishment Suhail Ahmed transferred Hussain Asghar, the investigative officer in the Haj scandal case back to the FIA. In return the prime minister immediately removed by the secretary from the prestigious post and demoted him as an OSD. The Supreme Court has taken a strong notice of that action and has sternly called upon the prime minister to reverse the orders.

As similar situation arose when in the NICL (National Insurance Corporation Limited) corruption case, a former secretary establishment Rauf Chaudhry reinstated Zafar Qureshi additional DIG as the investigating officer. Mr. Chaudhry was also removed from his post and made an OSD.

It is auspicious that the Pakistan's army is not meddling in these contentious and sordid affairs. The army might be keeping a vigil from a distance but so far all is quiet on their front. Sometime back, the Supreme Court's appointed benches had started reviewing the NRO cases that were swept under the carpet of amnesty. The party in power is ambivalent on the Supreme Court's judgment on NRO and is in no mood to make any headway on the follow up measures.

The PPP government is blowing hot and cold at the same time thus emitting mixed signals of both compliance and non compliance of the court's ruling. Initially they announced acceptance of the courts decisions what these might be. But the implicit fallout on the ministers accused of misuse of power and bribe, has provoked stiff and defiant reaction from the government.

On the whole the government's stance has been that the accused ministers will not resign their posts. Their only recourse is left to get themselves bailed out from the relevant courts as law minister Babar Awan had done well in time. The inimitable interior minister Rehman Malik did the same.

But the situation is not that much placid: it is simmering with dormant turbulence that can explode in the time to come. Such a chaos can burst out in case of a clash between the court's orders and the executive's refusal or foot dragging on complying with those orders.

It is foregone that the Supreme Court's landmark decisions on various high profile and unprecedented corruption cases has rocked the government and the things are not going to be peaceful or amicable. The government stalwarts in the recent past had been throwing hints of hostile action or interference by the forces which were outlined as ISI and the army by the then government's defense lawyer Kamal Azfar

This disclosure must have created strong tidal waves in the army which has so far demonstrated allegiance to the incumbent government. The pre-emptive apprehensions and anticipatory warning shots by the government look premature and childish.

The case of the defense minister Ahmed Mukhtar is indicative of the government's resolve to fight back if there was a situation of protecting the common cause and monolithic interests of the ruling cabal. The defiance bordering on unusual bravado displayed by the so called moderate prime minister in the brief encounter with the journalists in December 2009 betokened the mood of the government.

The prime minister was in an aggressive posture and categorically ruled out the arrest of the NRO affected ministers including the interior minister Rehman Malik. Rehman Malik showed prudence by pledging to respect the court's proceeding and directions, whatsoever. The PPP inner cabinet that met from time to time invariably put up defiant postures by hurling accusations at the forces that it alleged was out to derail the democratic process.

The PPP"s claim that it brought the democracy back to Pakistan rings hollow because when the civil society was up in arms against dictator Musharraf , PPP was busy in closed door rooms to strike a bargain with him under the NRO. The PPP government later remained as hostile to the restoration of the senior judges as was Musharraf. The stormy agitation of the lawyers and political workers and media, sans PPP cadres forced president Zardari, at the last moment, to restore the sacked judges.

So PPP does not have a valid claim of fighting for the revival of democracy and restoration of the removed judges. It did manipulate its victory in the elections that were won on the slogan of changing the status quo, revival of 1973 constitution and making policies for welfare of the people and the country and exposing Benazir Bhutto's murderers.

However, it didn't make good its promises made to the people of Pakistan and to its own political allies. Instead it unleashed such governance which was worse even than that of Pervez Musharraf. The PPP"s performance and credentials pose a big question mark.

If PPP delays, defies, sidetracks or hinders smooth compliance of the Supreme Court orders, there is going to be a real problematic situation. If such a standoff takes place and the government keeps sacking the bureaucrats obeying the court's orders as has been in various cases, then who is going to ensure the respectability for and compliance of the court's fiat?

Will it be done via street protests by the lawyers, the civil society or through pressure from the armed forces? It is possible that the court in that situation under the constitutional caveat 190 asks the army to pressurize the government for enforcement of the court's orders with regard to the detention, arrest, or jailing the indicted cabinet ministers or similar stalwarts.

That should be a simple application of pressure by the army and not take-over. As a matter of fact, the Supreme Court can only issue orders. It doesn't have physical force to get those orders complied with. The army's pressure can be viewed as a kind of intrusion as variously pointed out by the PPP ministers and party leaders.

The Sindh card is a very clumsy and counterproductive bid to demonstrate PPP's prowess to counter-attack the political adversaries. But if late Zulfikar Ali Bhutto could not cash on the Sindh card that he had also threatened to use against his incarceration by the military regime of General Ziaul haq, how can Mr. Zardari or PPP burdened with innumerable controversies and myriad corruption scams and bad governance can use it to their advantage.

This would be injurious to the national unity and may even backfire against its promoters. At least MQM would never be part of it because it being an ethnic entity can also become one of its targets.

Presently for all indications the incumbent federal government is under siege. It appears doubtful that despite its making lowly compromises to stay in power, it can complete its term of five years.

In retaliation to the government foot dragging on seriously abiding by the apex court's various orders,  the PFUJ, the Pakistan Muslim League Nawaz (PMNL) and Imran Khan chief of Tehrik-i-Istiqlal among other civil society segments have vowed to launch an anti-government movement and in support of the supreme court, for rule of law and constitutional ascendency.

There is no visible way-out for the government to dither or suppress cases such as  Harris Mills case, the Swiss Bank accounts of the president of Pakistan, the Pakistan steel mills sale at throw away price,  and later cheap selling if its products to hundreds of buyers causing an accumulative  loss of Rs. 43.25 billion from 2009 to June 2011.  The Haj scandal, the NICL gubernatorial money making scam and pending follow- up action on NRO stare in the face of the incumbent government.

In view of the Supreme Court's blurring verdicts and the pronounced call of agitation by various civil society groups and political parties, the government is proverbially caught between the devil and the deep sea. If the government keeps bracing against the Supreme Court and goes on stalling the follow-up administrative measures, it has no future.

Tribal war is feared in Afghanistan and Pakistan after US withdrawal

Call a friend in Peshawar and it is highly probable that you would not hear the usual ring tone. Instead, there will be a unique tune: a Hamd - a traditional Islamic hymn that praises Allah. The most popular Hamd in Peshawar nowadays is roughly translated as: "From whom would I ask if not from You (Allah)? Before whom would I cry if not before You (Allah)

A New Great Game

The normal assumption one can make is that the eventual withdrawal of US forces from Afghanistan will signal the beginning of the end of their "war against terrorism". It is predicted that by 2014, the Afghan security forces would be sufficiently trained and equipped, and in a position to take responsibility for the internal and external security of their country; and the stated US goals of defeating al-Qaeda and the Taliban would have, for the most part, been achieved. However, those who are even slightly aware of the dynamics of global geo-politics understand that the withdrawal shall actually signify the beginning of a new game in the region: The New Great Game.

Pakistan cannot be a viable state until it is linked in some way to a major economy or two, if it can't do this with India, via pipelines and trade routes, it will wither." Gwadar and New Great Game

Blue Green beaches, Golden sand, and incredible natural flora and fauna symbolises Gwadar, a pristine coastal city located hundreds of miles away from the troubled lands which constitute the epicenter of the war on terror. However, it is slowly drifting into another game due to its geo strategic location of being at the apex of the Arabian sea and mouth of the Gulf of Oman as well as its proximity of just 180 nautical miles from the Straits of Hormuz, a critical international oil trade route. And the chock point is its 47 feet deep sea warm water port. An inactive port and growing militancy in the surrounding are the indication that a storm in the making.

Dear journalists,

Recovering with resilience: Pakistan floods one year on

(Islamabad: 28 July 2010): One year ago Pakistan was hit by unprecedented monsoon rains and floods. Across the country the scope and scale of the crisis was exceptional, affecting the lives of over 18 million people, washing away communities and livelihoods, and forcing millions to flee from their homes. The crisis took the lives of a confirmed 1,980 people and left an estimated 14 million in need of humanitarian assistance.

The People of Pakistan have shown remarkable strength and resilience throughout the disaster, supporting each other to overcome extraordinary adversity. ‘’Yesterday in Muzaffargarh, I met over 200 pupils in a summer camp at a temporary learning center; I engaged with a Community Based Organisation that mobilized villagers to rebuild their homes; and I met with farmers who restored their irrigation system and now grow new crops. This resilience gives me hope and reminds me of the necessity to continue to all work together–the people of Pakistan, the Government and the humanitarian community,’’ said the Special Envoy of the United Nations Secretary-General for Assistance to Pakistan, Rauf Engin Soysal.

The Government of Pakistan has led the response with the United Nations and other humanitarian actors supporting national efforts. During the early days of the disaster the Government and the international community worked together to provide relief to the millions of people in need of immediate support, relocating and evacuating the most vulnerable, setting up camps to provide assistance, and striving to access as many people as possible, displaced in scattered settlements throughout the flood-affected regions.

As the floods receded and people returned to their places of origin, many found their homes and livelihoods had been washed away. As relief continued in the worst affected areas, early recovery began, supporting communities to rebuild their homes and restore their livelihoods, also supporting local authorities to recover from the devastation so that they are able to assist the millions of people affected by the floods.

With a crisis of such magnitude, the response has been complicated and challenging, but it has also been successful as a result of collaboration, cooperation and coordination, with the Government, the UN and with other humanitarian actors working together as best possible  to support millions of people affected by the floods.

The Government, the UN and other humanitarian actors have also been working together to prepare in case of future floods, with the monsoon season already having started. Today the Government, the UN and other humanitarian actors in Pakistan are better prepared to respond should another flood occur. With increased knowledge and experience of working in emergencies in multiple provinces, strengthened relations with the local, regional and national authorities, contingency plans for further flooding, and having learned lessons from the floods response, the disaster response capacity in Pakistan is significantly improved. There is still more work to be done

The UN is committed to the continued support of the people affected by the floods in Pakistan and urges the international community to continue supporting early recovery and follow through on the response.

“The UN is committed to the continued support of the people affected by the floods in Pakistan and urges the international community to continue supporting early recovery and follow through on the response,” said Mengesha Kebede, acting UN Resident and Humanitarian Coordinator for Pakistan.

In collaboration with national response efforts the UN will continue to support communities recovering from the destruction caused by the floods, and will strive to bolster resilience to the risks of future flooding.

The Pakistan Flood Relief and Early Recovery Response Plan is currently funded at 69.6 % (or US$1.3 billion) of the total requirements of US$1.9 billion. More than US$600 million is still needed to support early recovery activities and achieve the objectives set out in the floods response plan. The UN has released a report on the floods response titled Pakistan Floods One Year On available at www.pakresponse.info.
