When will stop the Killing of Innocents from Pakistan

The War on Terrorism had a major impact on Pakistan, when terrorism inside Pakistan increased twofold. The country was already gripped with sectarian violence, but after 9/11, it also had to combat the threat of Al-Qaeda and Taliban militants, who fled from Afghanistan and usually targeted high-profile political figures.

In 2006, 657 terrorist attacks, including 41 of a sectarian nature, took place, leaving 907 people dead and 1,543 others injured according to Pak Institute for Peace Studies (PIPS) security report.

In 2007, 1,503 terrorist attacks and clashes, including all the suicide attacks, target killings and assassinations, resulted in 3,448 casualties and 5,353 injuries, according to the PIPS security report. These casualties figure 128 percent and 491.7 percent higher as compared with 2006 and 2005, respectively. The report states that Pakistan faced 60 suicide attacks (mostly targeted at security forces) during 2007, which killed at least 770, besides injuring another 1,574 people. PIPS report shows visible increase in suicide attacks after Lal Masjid operation.

In 2008, the country saw 2,148 terrorist attacks, which caused 2,267 fatalities and 4,558 injuries. Human Rights Commission of Pakistan (HRCP) in its annual report indicated that there were at least 67 suicide attacks across Pakistan killing 973 people and injuring 2,318. Further, a source in the investigation agencies disclosed that the total number of suicide blasts in Pakistan since 2002 rose to 140 (till December 21, 2008) while 56 bombers had struck in 2007.

In 2009, the worst of any year, 2,586 terrorist, insurgent and sectarian-related incidents were reported that killed 3,021 people and injured 7,334, according to the "Pakistan Security Report 2009" published by PIPS.These casualties figure 48 percent higher as compared to 2008. On the other hand, the rate of suicide attacks surged by one third to 87 bombings that killed 1,300 people and injured 3,600.

Terrorist attacks staged in Pakistan have killed over 35,000 people, 5,000 of which are law enforcement personnel, and caused material damage to the Pakistani economy totalling US$67 billion by the IMF and the World Bank.

According to an independent research site pakistanbodycount.org maintained by Dr.Zeeshan Usmani a full bright scholar deaths from suicide bombings up to October 2011 were 5,067 with over 13,000 injured. The website also provides analysis on the data showing an evident increase in suicide bombing after the Lal Masjid operation. All death counts are verifiable from news sources placed online.

Pakistan in 2012. Pakistan has faced numerous attacks by insurgents as a result of the ongoing War in North-West Pakistan by the Pakistani military against militant groups, part of the War on Terror. At the same time, there have also been numerous drone attacks in Pakistan carried out by the United States which exclusively target members of militant groups along the Afghan border regions.

He was accompanied by a friend in his car, who was injured in the attack. The attackers were also said to be injured when two other men accompanying Raza fired in retaliation although they managed to escape safely. At least 15,000 Shi'a protestors staged a sit-in outside the Sindh Governor House on the first day of January to protest the assassination.

The bodies were recovered in North Waziristan, sustaining 40 bullets each and also bearing signs of torture. Terming the killings a "new year gift", the TTP called the incident a retaliation for the killing of Taliban comrades earlier by Pakistani security forces, saying that their military operations were against Islam and Pashtun tribal traditions, and vowed further violence. The funeral prayers for the soldiers were offered at an FC headquarters in Peshawar and the bodies buried with honours. The killings were condemned by numerous political figures, including Imran Khan.

January 7 Four people were killed in various sectarian target killing incidents in Gilgit. The government of Gilgit-Baltistan issues shoot-to-kill orders for target killers.

January 9 Ten soldiers who had earlier gone missing in December 2011 after a raid by militants were found dead in the Upper Orakzai area. A lesser known militant group working under the TTP umbrella claimed responsibility for the executions. The bodies were flown to Peshawar, where their funeral prayers were offered. The incident came just days after 15 FC soldiers were killed, also in Orakzai Agency.

According the Akhunzada's son, a rival militant group Lashkar-e-Islam (LeI) led by Mangal Bagh Afridi had long been targeting Akhunzada, and had also murdered some his close relatives before, because he "was helping the government against extremist group Lashkar-e-Islam (LeI).

January 31 One security guard and a woman were killed when unknown terrorists opened fire inside a Telenor franchise in Nazimabad, Karachi.

February 17 A suicide bombing in a bazaar in Parachinar, targeting Shi'a Muslims, killed 41 people. A splinter group of the Tehreek-i-Taliban Pakistan claimed responsibility for the attack, alleging the local Shi'a community of being involved in activities against them.

February 23 A remote control car blast in Peshawar killed at least 12 people and injured 32 people.

February 24 Three suicide bombers attacked a police checkpost in Peshawar, killing four policemen and injuring six. The attack was a reaction to the killing of a top Taliban commander in Waziristan. When the bombers were engaged by the policemen in firing, they blew themselves up.

Women empowerment tied to resilience of nations

Authorised women guarantee national development

PEW dissatisfied over women development initiatives

Islamabad: [Feb 26]

The Pakistan Economy Watch (PEW) on Sunday said empowered women make nations resilient nations and strong coming generations.

Studies show that all the members of a society are benefited when women are supported, it said.

Families are healthier, educated and balanced while productivity improves and incomes increase when women are given authority, said Dr. Murtaza Mughal, President PEW.

Speaking to business women after inaugurating second day of Spring Festival organised by Lubna Shahbaz, he said that empowering women is key to change and essential to achieving the objective of poverty eradication.

Expressed dissatisfaction over initiatives to reduce the gender gap, he demanded more allocation to improve living of women as they continue suffer in the formal and informal sectors of the economy.

Different cultural practices in rural and urban areas are nothing but systematic discrimination to women, he added.

Dr. Murtaza Mughal said women plays vital role in development of households, society, and the country but their role has always been underestimated.

Only educated and empowered women can guarantee uniform development of the country, he stressed.

He said that women are gifted with unique talents which are being underutilised at every level. Women can play a very active role in economic revival of country if they are given opportunities.

Delivery of national goals cannot be achieved unless growth of women is seriously focused, he said.

Dr. Murtaza Mughal lauded the organisers of expo saying such creative events provide opportunity, help expand relations while boosting the role and confidence of women entrepreneurs.

Dr. Murtaza Mughal said that many NGOs and business chambers are focusing urban women while rural women who deserve more attention are being ignored.

He said that business women have not focusing on introducing brands while some critical sectors also need their attention.

Pakistan women are facing many economic, political, social, cultural, religious, personal, psychological, and emotional issues but they have the potential to get their skills recognised in this challenging environment, he said.

Investing in underserved women's health and education is good economics, said Dr. Mughal.

PEF appeals transparency in automation, taxation

KARACHI, February, 26, 2012:

The Pakistan Economy Forum has stressed the improvements in tax to GDP ratio which is not increasing significantly, fiscal crisis is deepening, taxes are insufficient for debt service and defence. The reform of tax administration is the single important economic task for the government but it remains in doldrums since 2001.
The Pakistan Economy Forum has appealed before the Honourable Chief Justice of Pakistan,  representing the miseries of the masses that, powerless, oppressed, malnourished, illeterate, the shelterless masses of this country are at a juncture.
The people being crushed by poverty, unemployment, crime, lack of electricity, corruption and gas mismanagement. Almost, half of the population lives below the poverty line, struggling to survive under dollar a day.
The Forum appeals immediate enquiry of 13 Billion rupees loan given by the World Bank for TARP (Tax Administration Reform plan) in 2001. Further asked for enquiry of 2.4 billion rupees given by the Asian Development Bank (TAPI Project) for improvements in the taxation system.
Pakistan Revenue Automation Limited (PRAL),a subsidiary company of FBR, whose faulty ONE CUSTOM software was instrumental in pilferage of over 50 billion rupees in revenues in the Afghan Transit Container Scan and other 50 billion rupees of fraud in Sales Tax through their STAFF and STREAM softwares being allowed to deploy an untested and unaudited system WEBOC in Customs at Karachi. He draws attention towards the loss the state exchequer would bear through this system.
The appeal further mentions, FBR is spending 30 crores, merely on hardware, on a completely frivolous project (WeBOC) stated to connect banks to FBR. This project has never been tendered and is yet being implemented. How long the institutions of this country continue to sqander, loot and pilfer the resources that were meant to be spent for the welfare of the life of the citizens, it maintained.

Ends...
