Govt actions contain extortion in Karachi

Industrialists pleased over reduced incidents of ransom

Gangs shouldn't reappear to jeopardise peace, economy

Islamabad: [October 15]

Bhatta collection which has remained part of the culture of Karachi since decades has largely been controlled due to government actions providing some peace of mind to the business community, industrialists said.

The practice of visiting businessmen for extortion has been arrested after the action by law enforcing agencies which has improved the overall environment, said Suhail Tabba and Chairman APTMA Sindh-Balochistan Region Yasin Siddike.

Talking to Dr. Murtaza Mughal, President of the Pakistan Economy Watch, they said that there will be no peace and prosperity in Pakistan unless crimes are curbed in Karachi, the main financial hub of the country.

Law and order is the biggest problems which can be only resolved if government has zero tolerance policy towards law-breakings, they said.

Extortion was a profitable business in which some elements were making billions at the cost of business community which is already reeling under energy shortages, they added.

The extortionists should not be allowed to reappear on the scene as the state is duty bound to protect the life and property of its citizens in accordance with law, Tabba and Siddike demanded.

At the occasion, Dr. Murtaza Mughal said that it will be difficult for the political parties to purge themselves of criminal elements which is evident from their statements.

He said that working of law enforcing agencies needs to be improved as their failure pushes many businessmen to pay protection money.

He said that businesses should be encouraged to provide the names the people and parties demanding protection money.

People involved in ransom, abduction and exaction should be stamped out through indiscriminate action so that people feel comfortable again, Dr. Murtaza Mughal demanded.
