Privatisation Commission Appoints Consortium of National Bank of Pakistan, Habib Bank Limited, Arif Habib Limited and Foundation Securities Limited as Lead Manager/Book Runner(s) for Pakistan Petroleum Limited (PPL) Secondary Public Offering (SPO)

Privatisation Commission had received EOIs from three (3) consortia, which included (1) National Bank of Pakistan (NBP), Habib Bank Limited (HBL), Arif Habib Limited (AHL) and Foundation Securities (Pvt.) Limited (exclusive partner of Macquarie Capital) (FSL)  (2) Allied Bank Limited (ABL) , KASB Bank, KASB Securities (KASB) and AKD Securities Limited (AKD)  (3) United Bank Limited (UBL), Global Securities (GLOBAL), NIB Bank Limited (NIB) and BMA Capital (BMA).

Privatisation Commission, based on stringent selection criteria has appointed a consortium comprising of National Bank of Pakistan(NBP), Habib Bank Limited (HBL), Arif Habib Limited (AHL) and Foundation Securities (Pvt.) Limited (exclusive partner of Macquarie Capital) (FSL) as Lead Managers and Book Runners for the Secondary Public Offering of Pakistan Petroleum Limited (PPL).

This is a landmark deal under which the consortium has been tasked to divest approximately 2.5% of the GOP shareholding in PPL via Domestic Stock Exchanges. The consortium assured Privatisation Commission that the transaction will be completed within the anticipated time frame.

Analysts widely view PPL's secondary offering as an important step to re-initiate the privatisation programme, bringing Pakistan back on local and international investors radar and set guidelines for privatisation of other state owned entities.

PPL offering also signifies the Government of Pakistan's efforts to systematically reduce its shareholding in State Owned Enterprises (SOE's) and empower professional management and common people to manage, own and benefit from these assets.

-Parents appeal to Chief Justice to take suo motu action against education enemy teachers

Islamabad-- The teachers of Margalla College F-7-4 have not
started teaching to students of the college since the present educational year
started. They keep sitting in the staff room but do not work and get
salary for not working. No class is
being held.On Thursday October 13, they called some bad guys in the
college , who work on rent for political parties. They misbehaved with
the young girls and tried to tease them.
The parents have prayed the Chief Justice of Pakistan, Justice
Iftikhar Mohammad Chaudhry to take suo motu notice of this ugly
affairs of the non-teaching in Margalla College,
Islamabad and the conspiracies against education .
These teachers claim that they are on strike to demand raise in their
salaries.It is
astonishing that the strike is limited to sitting in the staff room,
not teaching the poor students who come everyday in thousands and in
the afternoon go without a class being held. The teachers enjoy costly
food bought sent by some unknown persons, and drinking tea.
The problem is that after the college was made a model college the
teachers want their salaries increased
.The better way was to teach the students and not waste their future
and place the
demands before relevant authorities. This is a game being written,
guided and staged by some unknown political and pro-Taliban
personalities opposing the Govt to create an unrest in Islamabad
colleges and keep girls uneducated. This year the education of
thousands of students has gone into jeopardy.
If the result of the college is checked it will be among the lowest of
the Islamabad colleges. Yet the teachers having outside backing from
political figures, are obstinate enough not to listen to the Principal
and even abuse her for her insistence for starting education.
Upon these awful, ugly and condemnable dirty tricks of the teachers
and their patrons from political parties, and non-interest by the
inept Govt even at Islamabad the parents have voiced a strong protest
and reaction. In
fact the parents are arranging a protest rally outside the Parliament
House to point out what is going wrong under the own nose of Prime
Minister Yusaf Raza Gilani (who has no time for work) and tell the
Chief Justice of Pakistan, that our future
generation is at stake not only in FATA at the hands of Taliban but in
Islamabad at the hands of Taliban teachers.
The parents plan to continue their movement against the teachers and
and demand their transfer to Federal Board Colleges in Balochistan as
a punishment.
The parents have made an interim body to organise rallies till the
all the teachers from Margalla College are transferred to Balochistan.

Islamabad, Thursday, 13 October 2011:  This is with reference to the article "Poverty Estimates" published in one of the leading Newspapers, quoting the Deputy Chairman Planning Commission of Pakistan Dr. Nadeem Ul Haque on the releasing of poverty numbers and terming the figures given by Musharraf regime was total "fraud". Deputy Chairman Planning Commission of Pakistan was misquoted in this regard. What he said was that many Pakistani eminent Economists are continuing to question the approach and the figure.

Clean hands save lives: Global Handwashing Day 2011 in Pakistan

Islamabad, 13 October 2011 – Millions of people in Pakistan and around the world are marking Global Handwashing Day, which aims to increase awareness and understanding of the importance of handwashing with soap as an effective and affordable way to prevent disease. This message is particularly vital for the 5.4 million people affected by the current monsoon flood emergency, many of whom are children at increased risk of contracting diseases like diarrhoea.

A seminar in the capital tomorrow (14 October) will bring together 300 school children and teachers from Islamabad and Rawalpindi, along with representatives from Government, UN agencies, non-governmental organisations, civil society and academia to stress the significance of handwashing with the theme 'Clean Hands Save Lives'. Similar events will be held in other parts of the country.

In addition, handwashing awareness activities and materials are expected to reach half a million flood-displaced children and UNICEF will distribute handwashing promotional materials to one million Pakistan school children.

In Pakistan, close to 116,000 children under the age of five die each year as a result of diarrhoea. Children also suffer disproportionately from sickness related to diarrhoeal disease, with almost 25 million cases reported annually in Pakistan alone. This situation is being made worse by the monsoon floods emergency. Globally, more than two million children under five die every year from diarrhoea and pneumonia-related illnesses.

"Washing hands with soap is critical," says Haider W. Yaqub, Country Director of Plan International, Pakistan. "It is an inexpensive yet effective means of protection against diarrhoeal diseases and one of the most effective and affordable health interventions. Handwashing with soap represents a cornerstone of public health and can be considered an affordable, accessible "do-it-yourself" protection against disease."

"The simple act of washing hands with soap at critical times, such as after using the toilet and before handling food, is a key cost effective and lifesaving action," says Karen Allen, Deputy Representative of UNICEF Pakistan.

"For flood-affected children and families, many of whom are displaced and living in terrible conditions, good hygiene practices such as handwashing with soap are essential to avoid disease," says Ms Allen. UNICEF and partners are reaching flood-displaced populations with hygiene kits, including soap, along with safe water supplies and hygiene promotion.

"In general, research has shown that handwashing with soap can reduce the incidence of diarrhoea among children under five by almost 50 per cent, and reduce Acute Respiratory Infections by nearly 25 per cent. Handwashing with soap can provide protection from polio and other diseases," says Ms Allen.

The Islamabad event aims to engage school children as effective agents for change, highlighting their role in both understanding good hygiene and taking these practices back into their homes and communities. A new UNICEF handwashing cartoon character, "SABU", will be launched and participants will agree to a declaration emphasizing the importance of handwashing and the widespread dissemination of handwashing messages.

Two conferences to help boost bilateral trade: High Commissioner

FPCCI delegation to attend Commonwealth moot, explore opportunities

Dated: October 13

Islamabad: Australian High Commissioner to Pakistan Tim George on Thursday said that his country is committed to development of Pakistan and we will continue to help Islamabad in through thick and thin.

Long-term commitment, sustainable and equitable socio-economic progress of the people of Pakistan is among our major aims, he added.

Talking to a delegation headed by President FPCCI Senator Haji Ghulam Ali, he said that upcoming meeting of Joint Trade Committee and Commonwealth ministers meeting will help boost ties as current trade with stands at $800 million only while trade with China is 100 billion dollars.

Tim George the envoy of the sixth-largest country and thirteenth largest economy said that Pakistani business community should start looking at opportunities in the south.

Australia exports more to Pakistan in one month than Islamabad exports to Australia in a year which needs to be balanced, he said.

He said that our 1.1 trillion GDP is equal to that of ASEAN and we have a very conducive environment adding that companies in the two countries need to know more about each other.

Tim George said that Pakistan needs to learn to add value to agricultural products. He added that we are counter-seasonal countries which make Australia a big market for Pakistan fruits and vegetables but locals are not aware of this.

He said that we have become third most favourite destination for Pakistani students after US and UK which is very encouraging.

"Pakistan is playing a very important role in the development of the continent and I believe that Pakistan has all the prerequisites to become a major economic power," he said.

At the occasion President FPCCI Senator Ghulam Ali said that FPCCI delegation will participate in Commonwealth moot scheduled on Oct 28 and explore business opportunities.

He said that we want durable relations with Australia which has been supporting Pakistan in good and bad times.

VP FPCCI Amir Atta Bajwa said that we want enhanced cooperation in upgrading dairy and citrus production.

Australian cooperation is needed to boost our ailing agricultural sector which is backbone of the economy, said Bajwa.

Chairman Media FPCCI Malik Sohail thanks the Australian government for working with Islamabad to overcome the floods crisis. He lauded the efforts to stabilize Pakistan's economy.

We will achieve goals including overcoming energy crisis with the cooperation of the 15th richest nation in per capita terms, said Sohail.

Others present on the occasion included VP FPCCI Fazl Elhai, Kunwar Qutubuddin Khan, Fayaz Ali, Samina Fazil.

The diplomats present in the meeting included Paul Molloy, Deputy High Commissioner, Azhar Shah, Country Manager AusTrade, Kevin Cunnington, First Secretary, Peter Bartlett, First Secretary, Charlotte Kennedy, Third Secretary, Emilia Christoforou , Imran khan, Political Officer and Fatima Inayet, Media and Political Officer.
