Malaysia donates US $1 million for relief efforts in flood-hit areas in Sindh
The Malaysian government has donated US $1 million to be utilized by MERCY Malaysia, a leading Malaysian relief agency, to undertake various projects in the Sindh province to alleviate the sufferings of people stricken by last year's monsoon floods.
The announcement was made by Malaysia's Deputy Foreign Minister Senator A. Kohilan Pillay at a ceremony at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Malaysia in Putrajaya, Kuala Lumpur, to give away a cheque for US $1 million to MERCY Malaysia. High Commissioner for Pakistan to Malaysia Mr. Masood Khalid was also present at the handing over of the cheque to MERCY Malaysia's President, Dato' Dr. Ahmad Faizal Mohd Perdaus.
Welcoming and appreciating the generosity of the government and people of Malaysia, Pakistan High Commissioner Mr. Masood Khalid said the government and the people of Pakistan valued the help from their Malaysian brethren and the aid was sure to go a long way in forging our bilateral relations further, especially in promoting people-to-people contacts.
He also lauded the relief assistance provided by the Malaysian government to Pakistan during the 2005 earthquake and the 2010 floods for which the Malaysian government had donated Rs US$1million to Pakistan. He also thanked the Malaysian government for the donation of a Mobile Utility Energy Package (MUEP) by Dunham-Bush Holdings Berhad last year for installation in the Province of Sindh.
In his comments, MERCY Malaysia President, Dato' Dr. Ahmad Faizal Mohd Perdaus also appreciated the support of the Malaysian government, in particular the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, for enabling the agency "to begin projects in Sindh, Pakistan, to alleviate the province's dire situation after it was hit by severe flooding which began in August last year".
He said heavy monsoon rain in Sindh and the northern parts of Punjab had affected the livelihood of 9.27 million people which relies heavily on agricultural produce. "MERCY Malaysia is genuinely heartened by the support of the Malaysian government which contributed USD1 million to the cause. With such a generous contribution from the government, MERCY Malaysia is confident that we would be able to respond to the disaster with more impetus and to greater effect" he added.
He said MERCY Malaysia would undertake a series of projects, including the installation of toilets, installation of hand-pumps, installation of Reverse Osmosis (R.O) System – water filtration system, distribution of relief kits & awareness campaign, provision of Primary Healthcare Services (PHC) – mobile & static as well as reconstruction & rehabilitation of health centres in the affected area.
