"Reducing Risks and Vulnerabilities from Glacier Lake Outburst Floods (GLOF) in Northern Pakistan"

 

A Glacial Lake Outburst Flood (GLOF) occurs when a lake contained by a glacier or a terminal ice dam fails. This can happen due to erosion, a buildup of water pressure , an avalanche of rock or heavy snow, earthquake or volcanic eruption under the ice, or if a large enough portion of a glacier breaks off and massively displaces the waters in a glacial lake at its base.

 

Keeping in view the importance of the GLOF issues, the Ministry of National Disaster Management in collaboration with UNDP Pakistan and Adaptation Fund has initiated a Climate Change Adaptation Project titled "Reducing Risks and Vulnerabilities from Glacier Lake Outburst Floods in Northern Pakistan".

 

The media launch of the Project shall be held on Monday, 16 April 2012. You are cordially invited to participate and cover the event. Please see below the schedule of the event :

China provided search and rescue equipment

to the Pakistani military

 

According to the needs of the Pakistani army, the People's Liberation Army in recent days has provided the Pakistani army with a number of technical equipment used to search for avalanche bodies of the victims, and sent technical experts to provide technical guidance in Islamabad.
