Saudi Arabia has joined the Royal family of Bahrain to crush the unrelenting mass protests being mounted for a civil society, fundamental rights, popular government and against the absolutism of the royal Khalifah family. The Saudi military army and massive military hardware is not for fighting an alien enemy or invader but essentially to suppress the internal uprising and revolt against the monarchical despotism imposed for decades on Saudi Arabia. A blessed land where the prophet of Islam was born spent his entire life in spearheading the divine mission and where caliphs were elected by popular consent is now lorded over by ruthless, wealth-greedy, cronies and lecherous families.  What a remorseful downslide from the blessed ages to the time of hereditary cabals.
Saudi Arabia is ruled by a government fiat that is crafted and enforced for the sake of royal, elite, and aristocratic families and tribal chiefs. The cardinal Islamic code of equality and social justice for all citizens in an Islamic state is considered to be an unpardonable crime severely punished in those holy lands.
Bahrain is a virtual protectorate of Saudi Arabia. She is literally following in her footsteps in suppressing the people. The paramount yet patently self-serving interests of both these family fiefdoms are to advance and keep in place the abominable dictatorship of the royal families. People only eat, work and sleep besides a few more chores. But beyond that to ask for elections, empowerment of the people, or a free society or pluralist form of government is such anathemas for the ruling classes as to be countered with hair-raising reprisals.  While the world beyond their frontiers is coming closer as a fraternal and closely knit village, these regimes remain islands of isolation and primitivism shorn of enlightenment, civil liberties and modernity.
Bahrain's area is about 300 sq miles and consists of 33 islands. Demographically, its population of 1.2 million is divided 30 to 70 per cent between the Sunnis and Shias respectively. Although Bahrain is said to be a constitutional democracy, yet in practice it is not. Most of the cabinet portfolios are with the royal family including those of the king, the prime minister and the crown prince. It has a bicameral legislature, yet the upper house is entirely appointed by the king, giving it a kind of veto power over the lower house elected through popular suffrage.
In Bahrain citizens have some civil rights and there is also a semblance of oppenness. But on the whole, it is basically a kingdom or monarchy run and controlled by a royal family. There is marked and yawning discrimination for social justice and rights between Sunnis and Shias. Shias being in majority with 70 per cent of the population are treated as downtrodden and less privileged.
The protests that started from February 14 are robustly continuing without any let up and respite, despite several casualties and iron hand intimidation by the government. These uprisings are diametrically different from the prolonged protests that raged in Bahrain between 1994 and 2000 and that culminated with the formulation of the National Action Charter.
The current protests in Bahrain are a proliferation and accentuation of what is happening elsewhere in the Middle East, by which people are endeavoring to get rid of the medieval forms of government. People want fundamental human rights, the pluralist democratic dispensations that should be elected by the people, for the people and not for the coterie of individuals or group of families ruling like ancient pharaohs. The political systems in both Bahrain and Saudi Arabia are replicas and prototypes of each other.
It is precisely for this reason that Saudi royal family and the United Arab Emirates have sent their troops, armed cars, sharp shooters, guns and military equipment to Bahrain to suppress the popular discontent so that it does not spill over to Saudi Arabia.
But for all indications, this time the suppression is not going to produce results in favor of the ruling families. This time the virulent protests are being staged nonstop by all sections of society, leftists, liberals and Islamists, the Shias and the Sunnis. The protest are being staged with  one single purpose of ending the suffocating and clannish undemocratic political order and replace it with a truly representative and accountable government, born out of the peoples consent, will and mandate. The fundamental change is that people have shed off the fear they had for these monstrous rulers.
The democratic governments around the world that forced Hosni Mubarak to abdicate power are not showing the same fervor in support of the protesting people of Bahrain for the motives that are self evident to all. One such reason is that the United States maintains its 6th fleet in Bahrain. There are prodigious military and economic interests of other European countries in Bahrain.
If these protests are allowed to fructify, it would be treated as a victory for Iran because any government that comes into being on the basis of popular vote would be those of Shias and would be ostensibly allied and aligned with Iran. It is unthinkable for the West and especially United States to allow a smooth sailing and burgeoning influence of Iran in Bahrain. That would not only raise the clout of Iran in the so called Arab land, it would also predictably pose a gubernatorial threat to its traditional enemy Saudi Arabia.
Besides, it would also pose a grave challenge to the military establishment of the countries now arrayed against Iran. As such crushing the revolt of the people in Bahrain is to forestall the advent of Iranian influence in Bahrain that is geographically so close to Iran and is located on the west of the Persian Gulf. The induction of Saudi and UAE troops in Bahrain is a violation of international laws and can provoke similar reprisal action from Iran. The incursion of Saudi and UAE troops into Bahrain violate the territorial sanctity and sovereignty of Bahrain professing to be an independent state.
It would therefore, be quite interesting and a matter of great curiosity to see, as to how the revolting people of Bahrain react to this latest unforeseen development. It should also be watched as to what could be the reaction of Iran for protecting the lives and interests of its co- faithful Shia community in Bahrain.
Incidentally the protests are also sporadically mushrooming in Saudi Arabia and the people for the first time are dauntlessly braving the state repression and cruel countermeasures unleashed to quash these protests. As stated earlier, Saudi Arabia presents the model of a medieval tribal sort of regime where dissent or asking for civil rights and parliamentary form of government is an exceptionally serious crime. To raise fingers on the extravagant and even un-Islamic life style of the royal families and chieftains is also strictly forbidden.
But despite such abominations, the western governments lend support to these unpopular regimes to stay and serve their vested interest one of which is the unhindered availability of oil to them. There is brazen duplicity and rank hypocrisy of the western democracies to selectively apply their human rights and democratic yardsticks depending upon the cronyism of these client states or otherwise.
But the clock of time cannot be rewound backward now. The spirit of time and the thrust of the present age resoundingly call for all the bonded and enslaved nations to be liberated from their past baggage of slavery and subservience imposed by the local lords or foreign imperialists. These autocratic outfits being resuscitated by foreign mavericks and distant god-fathers are destined to dissipate and be replaced with the modern states and new dispensations havng respect for their people and coming into being with their franchise.

Ahmed Rashid communist, capitalist, friend or foe read and do your own research and decide.

Following are responses in blue bold lettering for Ahmed Rashid comments;

NY March 4th 2011(PTI) Title:''Kayani feared condemning Guv murder may endanger army unity''

Response: Russian trained mercenary, journalist  Ahmed Rashid's comments are totally baseless and without facts.  God help world since, he claim's himself as a Subject Matter Experts 'SME' on (Al-Qaida and Taliban).

COAS Kayani is the head of Pakistan Army who earned much respect of many brilliant people.  But, Russians trained mercenary would not understand the proper meaning of Wisdom because; communism has no value for Wisdom and Creator.

New York, Mar 4 (PTI) Pakistan''s army chief Ashfaq Parvez Kayani, who had "declined" to publicly condemn the January killing of Punjab Governor Salmaan Taseer, had told Western envoys that there were "too many soldiers" in the ranks who "sympathized" with the assassin, a noted author has claimed.

Response: Responsibility of COAS Kayani is to look out for the interest of Pakistan, but Ahmad Rashid's responsibility is to satisfy his personal achievement by submitting evil, provocative, baseless claims.  Including, using situations, and present them in distort manner for personal gain.  Let's assume even if COAS Kayani shared his personal view with Western envoys / Ambassadors, they know the protocols and they would not jeopardize their credibility by turning their back on COAS Kayani and shared such info with Ahmed Rashid for public knowledge.  If COAS Kayani wanted public to have his comments. W
e all know better he is quite capable in sharing any information with public. So again, we see he say she say drama to disrupt relationship between USA and Pakistan and this time it came from no other then Pakistani journalist Ahmed Rashid.

Not everyone will listen to fabricated twisted report's and not verify. Wise people listen but always verify. There are many level headed people in this world and they will verify.

For its part, the army has so far failed to express regret on either Minority Affairs Minister Shahbaz Bhatti''s murder or Taseer''s, Lahore-based author Ahmed Rashid, also a senior journalist, wrote in ''The New York Review of Books''.

Both Bhatti, the only Christian member of the Pakistani Cabinet, and Taseer were killed for opposing the controversial blasphemy law.

Kayani "declined to publicly condemn Taseer''s death or even to issue a public condolence to his family. He told Western ambassadors in January in Islamabad that there were too many soldiers in the ranks who sympathize with the killer," Rashid wrote.

Response: Mercenaries are capitalizing the recent assassinations in Pakistan for their own personal gain.  Loss of Governor Taseer and MAM Bhatti are the major blow to Pakistan's reputation. But, one should differentiate between the role of Government spokesperson and Military.  Military is, not in the business of making public statements; any average person would know better.

Ahmed Rashid should not forget Pakistan has democracy now or maybe he is still thinking thru the mind set of communism where Military or a dictator rules everything.

PM Gilani clearly stated government's point of view on blasphemy law and said; there should not be any more discussion period.  Many understands blasphemy law is part of Pakistan Constitution and should be enforced with more scrutiny and responsibly to avoid any loss of innocent life.

The army chief showed the envoys "a scrapbook of photographs of Taseer''s killer being hailed as a hero by fellow police officers. Any public statement, he hinted, could endanger the army''s unity," Rashid said.

Response: Pakistan Military is responsible to protect Pakistan's interests just like any other Military would do for its Nation.  Worldwide audiences should listen everything what Ahmed Rashid has to say but verify, and you will definitely observe the motives and controversial patrons during his speaking engagements and future comments.  He is simply a good sales person and performer who wish to supply information which, suits to attending audience and including potential buyer of his books, classic motives and tactics of Russian training.

Behind this silence lies "something more sinister," he wrote. "For decades the army and the ISI have controlled the extremist groups, arming and training them in exchange for their continuing to serve as proxy forces in Afghanistan and Kashmir. But in recent years, the army has lost control of them and they are striking targets of their own."
"Yet the army has refused to help crack down on its rogue proteges despite the fact that extremists have increasingly attacked the army and the ISI itself," Rashid said.

Response: I think Ahmed Rashid is not fully aware, West is more equipped to get the real time info and better picture then what he is trying to paint on the wrinkled canvas of opportunity. He is clearly using scare tactics.
Since,  he claim's himself as a Subject Matter Expert 'SME' on Al Qaida and Taliban, then why world is still fighting this disease of terror? why his expert advises are not been influenced to fix this problem?.
It's so convenient and easy to blame ISI, CIA, Al-Mabahith Al-Aammah, Mossad, RAW and or any other global Intelligence agencies for the failures or lack of cooperation among them.
If Russia would have not been so persuasive, to take over the world all this (Al-Qaida – Taliban) would have not been in existence today.

Who was carrying the banner of communism in 70's, 80's in Pakistan?. World must know.   Now, its water under bridge and world has to face and deal with this evil's offspring's and mercenaries.  But we can't let sleepers communists fool the world any more or can we?

It's a known fact Pakistani public and installations are not immune from the quest to revenge of Russians Masters and they will continue as long as there are mercenaries who will try to disrupt Pakistan for what Pakistan did to Russian Masters in Afghanistan.

This is all the more ominous in view of the resources the military commands: half a million men, another half a million reserves, 110 nuclear arms, according to US media estimates, and one of the largest intelligence agencies in the world, the ISI, which has an estimated 100,000 employees, he noted. "If the army has now surrendered any willingness to take on the extremists, the political establishment had already given up long ago," Rashid wrote.

Response:  Pakistan and USA determined and committed to clean up the mess which, was created by Ahmed Rashid's mentors from Moscow.

War against terror is not fought with Ahmed Rashid's demands and instructions; it's fought with strategic planning and Wisdom.  Mess created since 70's will not take day or two to be cleaned up and there are many qualified people working on it.    World can rest assure there are great mind from USA and Pakistan working on this to eliminate this evil, and they will !!!.

Mercenaries should let professionals do their job and they should learn to live under democratic atmosphere and respect civil liberties, I guess it's extremely hard once communism is entrenched in confused mind.  Since, communism is foot on the run loosing believe in the cause could be quite a challenge to be a normal human being.

Thank God Professionals are not listening to Russian trained mercenary otherwise rest of world would be in same or worst situation like Russia. As we all know posts its shameful defeat from Afghanistan Russia faced miserable economic and political embarrassment worldwide.

Ahmed Rashid, should continue his career in writing because world has changed and it will continue to change.  Unfortunately;

Ahmed Rashid don't have any current state of the art training by his communists masters or maybe mercenary is out to collect such state of art training for communist brothers and sisters.  It's clear and obvious Ahmed Rashid is evaluating global issues thru an old-manuals of KGB.   World has changed tremendously, the recipient of communism benefits should stop sobbing about the breakup of Russia and its miserably failed ideology.  It's done and over with, communist system has failed and caused a lot of suffering and we are facing it in shape of terrorism. it's time to let's move on!!!.

President Asif Ali Zardari, the husband of slain PPP leader Benazir Bhutto, is no stranger to extremism himself and his populist base has traditionally voted for the party''s "anti-mullah, anti-army and pro-people policies," he said. "Unfortunately those principles were abandoned by a series of corrupt and ineffectual leaders, and the PPP today is not even a shadow of what it once was," he said, while noting that Zardari has also "backtracked" on foreign policy goals such as improving relations with India and Afghanistan.

Response:  We all know communism has always tight grip and restrictions on media and info for people.  We all know who the President of Pakistan is, thank you for sharing such a stale info.  Now, world gets information instantaneously, not like the times when Ahmed Rashid was in Moscow. I guess communism does that to brain and takes away an ability to think out of box.  Ahmed Rashid again forgets Pakistan has democracy not Dictatorship and it's not one man show any more.

Its Foreign office responsibility to improve and sustain relationships with International community by taking Parliament, Presidency on board and keeping its national interests in mind.  So, Pakistan has not backtracked on Foreign Policy infect relationships with Afghanistan and Bharat are much better now and it will get better and stronger, so eat your heart out.  Since, Ahmed Rashid is quite open about sharing his communist backed knowledge with others particularly with West why not share the identifications of corrupt and ineffectual leaders which he mentioned above.

Confusing, innocent but very smart people by "scare tactics" are not a good practice and it's not acceptable by any one.   May be It would blend well in communist countries not with those who are GOD fearing people who believe in Democracy, Freedom and Justice for all.

"The security agencies have unleashed Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) -- the largest and most feared extremist group in Pakistan, which was behind the 2008 Mumbai attacks -- on to the streets of Lahore," Rashid said. "Right now Pakistan is becoming a place where there is an army without a country," he wrote. PTI
Response: Ahmed Rashid once again supplied "Salami Piece Meal".  What agencies are supporting LeT, Identifying names would be good.  What's relevance between 2008 Bombay attacks to Streets of Lahore?. Connecting Qasab to Raymond is quite troubling, we all know Qasab is a terrorist and Raymond is a US Lahore Consulate General employee and his matter is in Court system and could be quite unfavorable to him, Raymond is innocent until proven guilty.   One must not send mix signals or swing by comments.

Combining and suggesting wrong info could be viewed as Contempt of Law and could also push US Pak relations out for free fall.  I must stress sharing encrypted info is a clear sign to popularity hunger.

Providing and sharing encrypted information to readers will be viewed as personal hidden agenda of mercenary.  I guess it's all part of an obsolete training of Russia.  World has tremendously changed, people are rejecting the ideology of so called Custodians of Islam, (Al-Qaida and Taliban) and communism.  USA and Pakistan and good people of the world are not tired, they will continue to fight these evil -tive forces and will defeat them as communism has been miserably defeated.

How someone can be a Subject Matter Expert (Al-Qaida and Taliban)?
  1. Lived among them (if Yes, then why not provide their where about)  IF NO, THIS DON'T QUALIFY TO BE SME, IS IT?
  2. Have personal contacts (if Yes, then why not provide their where about) IF NO, THIS DON'T QUALIFY TO BE SME, IS IT?
  3. Assisted their ideology (if Yes, then why not provide their where about) IF NO, THIS DON'T QUALIFY TO BE SME, IS IT?
  4. Combating for them (if Yes, then how one could be trust worthy who switched side from communism to Mujaheddin to God knows what now) IF NO, THIS DON'T QUALIFY TO BE SME, IS IT?
  5. Combating against them (if Yes, then where are the records and what capacity, e.g. as KGB agent or NATO) IF NO, THIS DON'T QUALIFY TO BE SME, IS IT?
If none of the above are applicable then how one could be an expert on such subject? Submitting articles and papers, of own believe will not make someone simply an expert.  It's a business and Ahmed Rashid has created an employment for himself and he has done well for himself. Not so good for those who wish to eliminate Al-Qaida and Taliban from its roots.  Many believe in these troubling times one should be part of solution not part of the problem.
Some of you might ask who am I to challenge Ahmed Rashid self claimed Russian jeweled throne as SME on Al-Qaida and Taliban.
So, I am not a writer or journalist but do have common sense and wish to use that towards +tive direction and willing to take on and challenge those mercenaries who are creating uncomfortable environment to disrupt global peace particularly USA and AFPAK relations by providing conflicting, controversial assessments and feedback just to gain popularity.
USA, Pakistan and others have sacrificed many lives n this war on terror, many came back to their families with Post War Syndrome, physically strained and disabilities due to the loss of arms, legs vital organs and many even back to shattered families.
Capitalizing on such situation is not moral nor its ethical?
One should assist in fight against terror instead of pursuing personal goals and hidden agenda against Democracy and Freedom. One must put brilliance to work for a good cause, with clear heart and mind.
Departing kick: Ahmed Rashid wrote GUV short for Governor, GENIUS!!! May be, it is in Russian language.

At a time when enlightenment is seeping through the Islamic heartland in the Middle East, jahiliyah (stubborn arrogance) is taking Pakistan by the throat. If the founder of the country, Muhammad Ali Jinnah, were alive today, he would live in fear, like the millions of others who share his secular ideology.

Murderous thugs control the country in the name of Islam, from Khyber to Karachi and from Lahore to Lasbela. This is no accident; it has been a long time coming. The chain of actual events and the process of constitutional and mental regression that have led to this can be traced back to Pakistan's beginnings.

Intolerance and bigotry first began to creep rather innocuously into Pakistan's body politic with the passage of the Objectives Resolution under Liaquat Ali Khan. It gathered pace under Zulfikar Ali Bhutto's politically expedient concessions to the Islamists. Ziaul Haq's constitutional amendments and propaganda on the pretext of Islamisation turned it into a fearsome juggernaut.

At the mundane level, followers of a religion that means 'submission' and 'peace' and preaches tolerance first systematically got rid of the Hindus and Sikhs who chose to live in Pakistan after partition. Then they began to bay for the blood of Ahmedis, a minority sect of Islam at the time, and did not rest until they were put at par with infidels or worse.

With the known 'infidels' out of the way, religious fundamentalists needed new enemies to keep their fires stoked and their hateful hunger satiated. So they turned on themselves, creating a whole new set of heretics, apostates, blasphemers and infidels.

The Wahabi/Deobandi sect, organised variously as Jamaats, Jamiats, Taliban and Lashkars, went after Shias, Christians and Barelvis. Now it is the Barelvis, organised as Tehriks, Jamiats, etc, who have vowed to physically liquidate all real and alleged blasphemers — Sunnis, Christians, Hindus, Shias and Ahmedis. Only Allah knows where and when this will end.

Secular minded, peaceful and tolerant people, even if they constitute the majority, are no match for these fanatical, armed marauders when the state itself cowers before them. Not that the majority can claim to be totally blameless in the acceleration of this descent into mayhem. As long as Pakistan's blasphemy laws were primarily directed against non-Muslims, the majority did not care and even welcomed these laws. But soon it turned into a Frankenstein ready to devour its own creators. Over half of the nearly one thousand persons charged under the blasphemy laws are mainstream Sunni Muslims. Some accused have been killed in jail or outside the court. Many rot in jail for years before they are released without a conviction, only to be killed later.

A qari (cleric) was burned alive some years ago after being thrown out of a police station where he had taken refuge to escape a lynch mob. A doctor has recently been arrested for trashing the business card of a medical salesman, part of whose name happened to be Muhammad. Even as I write, a Muslim who had been aquitted by a court about a year ago after being accused of blasphemy, has been shot dead near Rawalpindi.

Leaders of mainstream Islamic parties represented in the federal and provincial parliaments and cabinets openly extol murderers and suicide bombers, government ministers and security officials blame the 'foreign hand', and Urdu newspapers and TV anchors rant against the West.

It has to be admitted that the so-called silent majority is in general agreement with them as far as the 'vile' West is concerned, somewhat ambivalent on the issue of suicide bombings since it began to hit home, a little embarrassed about the harassment of our poor Christians but in total agreement on the persecution of Ahmedis and the physical liquidation of alleged blasphemers.

One recoils even to think that in the country founded by Jinnah, tens of thousands of people would join processions led by politico-religious parties demanding the death sentence for a Christian mother of four for some words she is alleged to have uttered but which she denies, and that lawyers would applaud the cold-blooded murderer of a provincial governor as a hero.

Contemporary Muslims, one and all, like to boast about the contribution of earlier Muslims to science and civilisation. Not many know that the Muslim scientists who give them a sense of pride in their past were invariably secular minded rationalists who were able to pursue their chosen interests under enlightened caliphs or kings.

A London-based Wahabi journal has denounced them for precisely that: "The story of the famous Muslim scientists of the Middle Ages, such as Al Kindi, Al Farabi, Ibn al Haytham and Ibn Sina shows that, aside from being Muslims, there seems to have been nothing Islamic about them or their achievements. On the contrary, their lives were distinctly un-Islamic. Their achievements in medicine, chemistry, physics, mathematics and philosophy were a natural and logical extension of Greek thought."

Add to the list the name of Al Razi, called the "most brilliant genius of the Middle Ages" for his contribution to medicine, and that of Ibn Rushd, the great rationalist Muslim philosopher. All the above-mentioned suffered persecution at the hands of fundamentalist rulers and religious bigots.

In India itself, the brightest periods of Muslim rule are associated with secular emperors like Akbar and Shah Jahan. The decline of the Mughal Empire commenced when Aurangzeb began to push orthodoxy, punishing free thinkers and persecuting minorities.

There is a famous statement attributed to Pastor Martin Niemöller that tries to explain how the Nazis were able to purge all who opposed them one by one, while everyone who was not immediately affected remained silent. It goes like this:

"First they came for the communists; and I didn't speak out because I wasn't a communist. Then they came for the trade unionists; and I didn't speak out because I wasn't a trade unionist. Then they came for the Jews; and I didn't speak out because I wasn't a Jew. Then they came for me; and there was no one left to speak out for me."

Unless the majority immediately and forcefully speaks out against the religious inquisition and witch-hunting, for the acceptance of religious diversity, and in support of tolerance of dissenting and minority viewpoints, Pakistan is fully on course to push itself into the dark pit of jahiliyah.
