I never liked JI for their politics, but as time has proved...no matter how they are and what they do, and how much one dislikes them....JI is true Pakistani....never will they step back there..and that deserves some praise!!!!

Power tariff hike leaves industry uncompetitive: Mohsin Aziz

Best practises suggested for achieving energy efficiency

ECMs announced by Government have failed earlier, revisit needed

Islamabad: [October 16]

Central Chairman of the All Pakistan Textile Mills Association (APTMA) Mohsin Aziz on Sunday said increase in the electricity charges will leave labour-intensive textile industry uncompetitive.

Negative industrial growth will result in reduced output, missed export and revenue collection targets and monumental unemployment, he warned.

Mohsin Aziz said that continuous upward revision in the tariff has not helped bring power generating companies back to profit, it hasn't reduced line losses or helped tackle circular debt which calls for some out of the box solution, he said.

Thirty six per cent hike in charges will not resolve power crisis but it will devastate masses and prove fatal for the textile industry which consumes around 30 per cent of the all electricity available, he observed.

Policy of punishing everyone will never pay dividends, he said adding that government should hike tariff in the regions where theft is common while the consumers of the area with little losses should be spared.

Chairman Aptma said that honest consumers deserve reward while dishonest merits punishment otherwise government will run risk of transforming reliable consumers into power stealers, he said while talking to Dr. Murtaza Mughal, President of the Pakistan Economy Watch.

He said we are in process of suggesting best practices to the government to which may result in certainty, reliability, savings, reduced costs and improved methodologies.

Energy Conservation Measures (ECMs) announced by the federal government need to be revisited, Mohsin Aziz observed.

These steps have been announced earlier but haven't worked; it will be hard to implement as almost all the important trade leaders and chambers of the country have already challenged these decisions, he said.

At the occasion Dr. Murtaza Mughal said that improving bill collections by 300 billion rupees is too optimistic but possible if government is willing to penalise ministries and deduct outstanding bills from their allocations.

Improving governance in distribution and generation companies by inducting competent officials is something government has been avoiding since half a decade, he said.

He said that policy rate cut has been rendered irrelevant by the power tariff hike adding that ECMs should reduce consumption without adding to confusion and triggering protests.

The measures announced recently offered nothing new, it was just a repetition of the past blunders, said Dr. Mughal.

Insurance a good social welfare tool: Mian Shahid
Ethical practices by insurance companies, agents stressed
Dishonesty harmful for personal life, fatal in business

Islamabad: Oct 16
Chairman of the United International Group (UIG) Mian Shahid has said that
insurance is a good social welfare tool that can have a positive impact on
businesses and lives of millions.

Insurance if used properly can help people in hard times by transferring
their losses, he said.

Speaking at launching ceremony of UIG News, he said that insurance is
popular in west but it is yet to make inroads in the east for which the
insurance companies are partly responsible.

He said insurance can only be made popular when companies prefer interests
of customers over their own interests and spend part of their profit on
social uplift of the dispossessed.

Mian Shahid said that UIG has planned to launch a campaign to create
awareness among masses regarding different insurance schemes.

He said that insurance can become a respectable venture if ethics are
employed by the companies in an acceptable manner.

Ethics awareness programmes should be a continuous process across the
whole insurance industry, he stressed.

For the good of the society, we should embrace a value system comprising
honesty and respect for other person which must be the qualifying
parameters for any insurance professional.

"Without honesty, there is no chance of a successful business
relationship; dishonesty is destructive for personal life and it is
disastrous in business," he said.

There is no law against rudeness but no one would you continue to do
business with someone who is rude, he said adding that those who cheat
their customers fail soon.

Moral perfection can only be achieved through personal accountability and
discipline which seems to be unpleasant in the beginning but pay dividends
in the end.

Mian Shahid said that we have to go a long way as far as fair treatment of
competitors, full disclosure and faithful control over other people's
money is concerned.

A manager who lacks moral clarity should not expect it from subordinates;
he can transform good assistants into mercenaries, he said.
