Islamabad traders reject energy conservation measures

Traders hail services of outgoing body

Dated: October 14

Islamabad: Traders of Blue Area have rejected the energy conservation measures announced by the government terming it against their interests.

Closure of markets amounts to economic murder of trading community therefore it will not be allowed and any such move will meet our resistance, they said.

This decision was taken in a meeting attended by hundreds of traders and many business leaders including Amin Pirzada, Liaquat Ali Noon, Yusuf Rajput, Haji Muhammad Naeem, Imran ul Haq, and Raja Hassan Akhtar.

Speaking at the occasion outgoing Chairman of Traders Welfare Association Malik Sagheer said that  such decisions have proved useless in past and it has added to trouble of masses and business community.

He said that government is busy in experiments which proves that they have nothing concrete in mind.

Sagheer said that he will continue to serve masses after his term and lauded the role of outgoing President Malik Sohail Hussain.

He said that Sohail brought Blue Area on the map and tried best to serve the community.

At the accession Malik Sohail said that his doors will be open for the business community as his new engagements would not keep him from Blue Area. "I am available for any accountability," he said.

At the occasion capital Group nominated Nadeem Mansoor as new president of the Blue Area while Shakeel Aziz was nominated as General Secretary.

Speaking to the traders, Mansoor and Aziz said that they would continue to serve and defend trading community. We will follow the footsteps of Malik Sohail and seek guidance from him in critical matters.

Traders unanimously vowed to resist unilateral moves of the government.

IOM Disaster Communications Teams Save Lives in Flood-Hit Sindh

Press Release

14 October 2011

ISLAMABAD: IOM communications teams in flood-hit areas of Sindh are saving lives by reporting the needs of families cut off by the floods to aid agencies, enabling them to provide a coordinated response, delivering food, health care, shelter and other lifesaving items.

The teams are also alerting displaced communities to public health issues including dengue, malaria, diarrhea and snake bite prevention and treatment, at the request of the government and the humanitarian community.

Recently, an IOM team identified 40 families in Mohammad Bakhsh village in Mirpurkhas district who were stranded in flood-water and had run out of food. The information was immediately reported to the “cluster” of agencies delivering food aid and the villagers’ needs were promptly met.

In the same village, the team identified 5,500 animals at risk from flood-related diseases. The Executive District Officer (EDO) was informed and an immediate vaccination drive was arranged.

“Our over 20 teams in Sindh are facilitating by two-way communication from the communities to the authorities and from humanitarian partners and the government to the affected population. This is helping to bridge communication gap and saving lives,” says IOM Communication Project Officer Maria Ahmed.

IOM recently expanded the coverage of the communication teams from 14 to 21 of the 23 districts in Sindh.

The teams are also supporting the government’s new initiative of emergency relief to flood-affected families through distribution of the Pakistan Card.

This debit card currently provides Rs 20,000 for each flood-affected family in the worst hit districts of Umerkot, Sanghar, Badin, Tharparkar, Tando Allah Yar, Tando Muhammad Khan, Shaheed Benazirabad.

The teams have also developed frequently asked questions (FAQ) and a Sindh Service Directory for aid agencies and flood-affected communities, which is being extensively used during emergency operations in affected areas.

Bhatta contained in Karachi: CEO Lucky Energy

Resurfacing of extortion gangs to jeopardise peace, economy

Islamabad: [October 14]

Bhatta collection which has remained part of the culture of Karachi since decades has largely been controlled providing some peace of mind to the business community, a leading businessman said.

The practice of visiting businessmen for extortion has been arrested after the action by law enforcing agencies which has improved the overall environment, said Suhail Tabba, Chief Executive of Lucky Energy.

Talking to Dr. Murtaza Mughal, President of the Pakistan Economy Watch, he said that there will be no peace and prosperity in Pakistan unless crimes are curbed in Karachi.

Law and order is the biggest problems which can be only resolved if government has zero tolerance policy towards law-breakings, Suhail Tabba, who is also director of Lucky Cement, underlined.

Chairman APTMA Sindh-Balochistan Region Yasin Siddike said that extortion has become a profitable business in which some elements were making billions at the cost of business community which is already reeling under energy shortages.

The extortionists should not be allowed to reappear on the scene as the state is duty bound to protect the life and property of its citizens in accordance with law, he said.

Siddike said that law and order situation and energy shortages have crippled textile industry which should be seen as a threat to our fragile economy.

At the occasion, Dr. Murtaza Mughal said that it will be difficult for the political parties to purge themselves of criminal elements which is evident from their statements.

Therefore, he said, the administration needs to rediscover its capacity to deal with crimes before launching an effective deweaponisation campaign.

Dr. Murtaza Mughal said that working of law enforcing agencies need to be improved as their failure push people to buy weapons for personal safety which has added to the problem.

He said that businesses should be encouraged to provide the names the people and parties demanding Bhatta which is dubbed by some as a national security issue.

People involved in ransom, abduction and exaction should be stamped out through indiscriminate action so that people feel comfortable again, he demanded.
