Ok, so I’m a senior in high school and have been accepted into University of Illinois. My mom went to a financial aid help night to learn more about it. Basically, she is going scholarship crazy on me. To start off, she wanted me doing 15 scholarships a week! She lowered her standards a little, ONLY 6 a week, but i still think this is an incredible amount of scholarships to do. I mean, i have after school activities everyday, im in multiple AP classes and the rest are honors, so i have a tough scheldule and hours of homework every night.
Do you think that my mom’s expectations are fair with everything else that i am doing? What suggestions do you have for me to deal with this?
Your mother is worried you won’t be able to afford your college education. 6 a week is a good idea. You can’t earn them if you don’t apply and you could apply for dozens without ever getting one. She is only trying to help YOU. The more you earn, the less you’ll pay for your school. Freshman are only allowed to borrow 3500 their first year and unless you plan on going to a community college, it’s often not enough, and who wants to borrow anyway.
My first suggestion would be to START with the scholarships offered by the school you are going to attend. Fast web has a lot of good info, and I think you should still do it, but you have better odds at the school you have chosen where fewer people are applying.
Start a notebook and log everything with application deadlines, your submission date, and then the notification date listed on the app. This will make your mom VERY happy and help you keep organized. Also, once you earn one, don’t stop applying, you can get funding from more than one or two sources and don’t forget most scholarships aren’t automatically renewed every year so if you find one that is work real hard on that application. Freshman start out really good with scholarships but then when they hit their sophomore year they get zilch because they forget to meet those early deadlines.
Good luck.
I am going into college next fall for a bachelor’s in nursing. What scholarships are available for those on the east coast that are interested in nursing? Personally, I prefer scholarships that are relatively easy to acquire so I don’t end up going crazy.
Just how badly do want that scholarship?

I think there are 3 kinds
- Scholarships offered by your college, usually it is awarded for students with high GPA and high SAT scores.
- Scholarships offered by government: if one of your family member relates somehow with 9/11 or any kind of War or did the service, you should look for this kind of scholarship.
- Scholarships offered by other foundations, organizations: you will have to apply for this kind and they usually require essay but not stress too much on test scores.
