This is a strongly worded, infact viciously written essay about Asef Ali Zardari and Muamar Gaddafi. But how and from where can Pakistani's find a better President? Let us try to do better than chest beating on account of well entrenched Zardari, and his kitchen cabinet. Pakistan Peoples Party is the only all provincial party. The new province of Gilgit-Baltistan voted for it overwhelmingly. Unfortunately the crisis it is mired in is self made. The greed for easy money is an epidemic of its own making. What is the way out needs to be suggested by intellectuals and column writers.

Subject: [Pak-Media] Upright Opinion: The Paralyzed Government

March 5, 2011

The Paralyzed Government

By Saeed Qureshi

The erstwhile jail bird and currently the president of Pakistan his Excellency Asif Ali Zardari hovers over the globe in the presidential aircraft, like a bewitched midget, touching one capital after another. The Prime Minister Gilani is busy in his frantic efforts to make unworthy compromises for remaining in power. His beloved son is so far successful in blunting all judicial and executive efforts to nab him in one of the stupendous money making scams. The Defense minister Rahman Malik is in the lead for his inimitable skill of compulsive lying. With his unremitting falsifications, he reinforces the belief in the reincarnation with Goebbels' soul in him.

The crime is mushrooming as a way of life. The people in the streets, markets, public places and even in their homes are being targeted and killed for a host of insidious reasons. The law minister Babar Awan is successfully breaking and defying the law by not taking the judiciary's decision with an iota of seriousness and reverence. President has appointed a person as governor of Punjab who is involved in a big bribe case.

The dauntless and superbly professional GEO reporter Wali Khan Babar laid down his life in the line of duty. His case is allowed to become irrelevant and cold as to lose its urgency. The two dutiful individuals who witnessed the gruesome murder have also been killed in mysterious circumstances, understandably, to erase the evidence against the heinous culprits, more power than the state of Pakistan.

The Federal Minister for Minorities Shahbaz Bhatti, an illustrious, liberal and patriotic Pakistani from the Christian community was gunned down evidently by the same assassins who assassinated the governor of Punjab Salman Taseer. These are high profile murders that have come to the public limelight. Those common folks who are murdered for ransom, or in gang wars or for extortion money, or for sectarian reasons are countless. The country called Pakistan is gradually or rapidly turning into the killing fields of the citizens.

The internal and external outcries for catching the murderers of these slain marvelous Pakistanis are cries in the wilderness. If a political party in power has failed to vigorously and promptly pursue the murder of its own chairperson - the daughter of the founder of the party Zulfikar Ali Bhutto, how it can be expected to be serious, earnest and prompt on other murder cases.

We have a government that looks like the scarecrow or a phantom or a weathercock, utterly docile or unfit to determine which way to go and what to do and how to do. The recent cabinet reshuffle patently was an exercise in futility as the change or reshuffling crooks with crooks is not going to improve the horrendous situation. There is no check on the fast deteriorating law and order situation in Pakistan.

Pakistan is paralyzed by sectarian divide, political factionalism, a teetering economy, the broken and obsolete civic system, malfunctioning institutions, bad governance, widespread corruption, glaring patronage and swelling violence. The ineptitude, incompetence, apathy and indifference of the people in power and also themselves becoming part of the melee of plunder are taking Pakistan to a situation of a failed state.

The government has lost its moral rudder to steer the country out of dire straits. It is trying desperately against all its disqualifications to cling to power. Its performance is as useless as the fleeting clouds after a downpour. The government was brought into power by the consent of the people and by their representatives in an unprecedented show of support, unanimity and solidity. And watch what they have done to the nation and the country. They are bleeding it white by their ravenous avarice and interminable lust for money through every conceivable channel and means.

They overlook the crimes, murders, dacoities, rape, kidnapping, poverty, power outrages, paucity of potable water, the filth spattered on every wall of Pakistan, perfidious mal -nutrition, the dwindling educational standards, the plummeting economy, sky rocketing prices, the odious nepotism, and the dreadful drift that is tearing apart the already fragile cohesion and  frail fabric of national unity.

Asif Ali Zardari is a replica of Col Mummar Qaddafi of Libya. Qaddafi is tenaciously hanging on to power and seems to be unmoved despite a civil war situation brewing up in his country. Qaddafi has no place around the world to seek asylum or shelter. He would, therefore, fight to the last because he has no other option to fall back upon. Either power or death is the message that he is giving by his shrewish behavior.

Zardari on the contrary, has roots and considerable clout in Sindh. He is not a ruthless dictator but a pliable greedy plutocrat whose hunger for wealth never recedes. But like Qaddafi, he would resort to all machinations to remain in power. It is his sham timidly or cunning that has so far kept him in the highest office and his party in power. He has the knack of making most humiliating compromises if such a behavior helps him to rule the roost. He would simultaneously ditch his closest cohorts and allies if he visualizes that their alliance was less advantageous or of no avail.

Precisely for this shrewdness, he has accepted the separation of PMLN and accompaniment of MQM, although the later is turning into an albatross in the neck of PPP by opposing various critical decisions such as taking back the petroleum price hike. Zardari very well knows that, on its own, the MQM was not in a position to form its own government at the center and in provinces. He is also mindful that, in comparison, the PMLN poses a greater challenge to the PPP"s government.

What Qaddafi and Zardari commonly share is the insatiable desire to remain in power, although they employ different tools and tactics to retain it? Qaddafi believes in the use of uninhibited brutal force and repression. Zardari believes in chicanery, duplicity, deceit, cajoling and low lying compromises. The objective of both is to hold on to the power. But in the longer run, both theses stratagems and maneuvers back fire. And this is what would be happening to both these contemporary heads of Islamic states.

Dear All,
Please pass this press release on to EVERYONE. We are at a turning
point. If the students at the Multan College of Arts can manage to
pull this off, it is a step to a social revolution, which as u know we
badly need in Pakistan. It may deter politicians from further
involvement in the institution, and it may encourage others to throw
out incompetent political appointees. Geo has refused to air the
students protest, and so far only Samaa and Dunya have given it any
coverage. Time is of the essence.

"Without education it is complete darkness and with education it is
light. Education is a matter of life and death to our nation. The
world is moving so fast that if you do not educate yourselves you will
be not only completely left behind, but will be finished up. The Holy
Prophet (PBUH) had enjoined his followers to go even to China in the
pursuit of knowledge. If that was the commandment in those days when
communications were difficult, then, truly, Muslims as the true
followers of the glorious heritage of Islam should surely utilize all
available opportunities. No sacrifice of time or personal comfort
should be regarded too great for the advancement of the cause of
education."

Quaid-e-Azam

Since last Thursday, February 24th, students of the Multan College of
Arts (MCA), at Bahauddin Zakariya University in Multan, Pakistan, have
refused to go to any classes. They are striking in protest of the
administration's decision to not renew the contract of their respected
teacher, Assistant Professor and Canadian expat, Richard Seck. They
are also demanding the immediate dismissal of the school's Principal,
Zafar Gillani.

In the last two and half years, students of MCA have watched Richard
Seck work tirelessly trying to fill the holes in their learning of the
subject of design, specifically graphic design. Alongside this, he has
attempted to dig deep and discover what each student's true passions,
skills, and goals are, so as to give them a meaningful direction to
their work. With the senior students, the challenge then was to help
them discover the thesis project that was uniquely them: a project
that would be born of their passion, served by their skills, and in
the end, provide them with a portfolio that would allow them to move
forward in the direction that they had identified for themselves;
whether higher education, or a specific job in the marketplace, or
perhaps a home-based business. Then there was the need to provide a
proper exhibition of this hard work and, in his first year at MCA, the
College only had an unfinished concrete shell of a gallery to house
the design thesis show. With his enthusiasm, students were inspired to
help in transforming what was considered an impossible venue for an
exhibition into a first thesis show that was pure magic! Since then,
his photography students have mounted a show of their work for the
Prime Minister of Pakistan and two other highly successful thesis
shows have taken place. Graduating students have been making MCA proud
with their manifold achievements since leaving the College. Alongside
all this, Mr. Seck worked on improving the facilities; less than half
the computers were working when he arrived at the College, and they
were so poorly specified that they could barely run the required
software. There was no Internet, no UPSs to combat the unending load
shedding, and the list went on. Students watched for six months as he
trudged to the administration building, time and time again, to get
funding to resolve these problems. By his determination and the grace
of God it actually happened and the problems were sorted (at least for
a short while)! As it was also clearly evident that the students'
understanding of fundamentals of art and design needed to be addressed
and strengthened at the early stages of their education, students
observed how Mr. Seck struggled to bring the Indus Valley School of
Art and Architecture Foundation Year Program (one of the premiere art
and design college's in the country, where he had previously served)
to MCA, and oversee its implementation and development. The list goes
on but it should be clear by now as to why the students are protesting
the dismissal of such an asset of the school…

Initially supportive of the efforts of Mr. Seck, the Principal, Zafar
Gillani, in the spring of 2010, started an aggressive campaign to
discredit the efforts of one his most popular teachers at the school.
His support was nonexistent for any of Mr. Seck's future initiatives
and indeed, Principal Gillani began a process of destroying the
successful programs that were in place at the College as a result of
Mr. Seck's efforts. Zafar Gillani's complete lack of support for the
2010 Thesis Show was devastating, both students and faculty (not one
rupee was given by the school to support the huge effort that was made
by each student who attempted a proper thesis project). This
exhibition is a major promotion for the College and failure of the
Principal to allocate any funds (MCA had a Rs. 500,000 donation to the
department that year) to this incredible event, was unforgivable.
Then, after the huge effort to set up and run a proper integrated
Foundation Year program in the College, which was an adaptation of the
program from one of the premier art and design colleges in the
country, the response from the MCA administration to those who
implemented and worked hard to make it a success, was nothing but
damning criticism, to the point where Mr. Seck suggested to Mashad Ali
Jafri, the man who brought the program to Multan, to go back to
Karachi. This sadness was amplified by the reality that, after three
highly successful Design Department thesis exhibitions led by Richard
Seck, the man who had implemented the highly praised thesis program,
was removed from anything to do with thesis, design teaching, or
curriculum development. And, although Mr. Seck had given the
Principal, who took charge of the thesis program, a complete document
of how this innovative program had been run to date, it was
essentially thrown in the dustbin. The list of atrocities goes on, but
at this point it should be clear as to why the Principal is being
asked to leave.

"Pakistan is proud of her youth, particularly the students, who are
nation builders of tomorrow. They must fully equip themselves by
discipline, education, and training for the arduous task lying ahead
of them."

Quaid-e-Azam

Pakistan should be proud of these brave and determined students of the
Multan College of Arts, who have taken a stand and said, "enough is
enough!" Indeed, Mr. Jinnah is smiling, and perhaps this collective
Rooh will spread its glow, far and wide, with the hope of a better
Pakistan.

Bismillah.

Fourth Al-Shifa Trust Eye Hospital to start functioning this month

Press Release

RAWALPINDI, March 06, 2011: The Al-Shifa Trust, which is already running
three state-of-the-art eye hospitals in Rawalpindi, Kohat and Sukkur, is set
to formally commission its fourth eye hospital at Muzaffarabad, the first
such facility in eight districts of Azad Kashmir, later this month.

This was disclosed in a meeting chaired by Al-Shifa Trust President Lt Gen
(Retd) Hamid Javaid here on Sunday to review the arrangements for
commissioning of the hospital, which is to be formally inaugurated towards
the end of this month.

Al-Shifa Trust Eye Hospital Rawalpindi Executive Director Brig (Retd) Rizwan
Ullah Asghar, who coordinates functioning of all hospitals of the trust,
told the meeting that the hospital would be formally inaugurated by the end
of March to provide specialised eye-care services to the people of Azad
Kashmir as well as Gilgit-Baltistan.

The meeting was informed that the 200-bed hospital, built over 50 kanals of
land, has covered area of over 50,000 square feet. It has the capacity to
manage about 800 patients of all type of eye diseases and undertake 100
operations daily. Designed to cater for eye-care needs of the whole region,
the construction of Al-Shifa Trust Eye Hospital in Muzaffarabad has been
completed at the total cost of Rs250 million.

"Within 10 years, it will become a centre of excellence in the region
providing postgraduate training to doctors and facilities for applied
research to prevent blindness as well as eye care to almost five million
people," the meeting was told. "It will serve as a base hospital for
multiple vision centres in remote areas of Azad Kashmir and
Gilgit-Baltistan."

Giving background of the project, the executive director said that in
Muzaffarabad, a scenic tourist destination and administrative capital of
Azad Kashmir, a colossal tragedy unleashed by 7.6-magnitude earthquake on
the fateful morning of October 8, 2005 changed the lives of people as it
almost totally smashed everything.

"Rising to the occasion, Al-Shifa Trust Eye Hospital, Rawalpindi, provided a
100-bed fully furnished ward and six-table fully furnished operation theatre
for earthquake victims where over 700 trauma operations were performed.
Since then, the life in Azad Kashmir is sluggishly returning to normal but
the collapse of infrastructure has resulted in marked increase in serious
health problems, including blindness," he said.

With over four million population spread over an area of 13,300 square
kilometres, Azad Kashmir has not even a single state-of-the-art eye hospital
until now. On the top of that, the 1.5 million people of Gilgit-Baltistan
also add to this huge demand for the eye-care facilities.
