We will establish help desks in FPCCI's regional offices to provide adequate support to call chambers and businesses, said Chadda.

Chairman Media FPCCI Malik Sohail Hussian said that business community should try to resolve issues with the help of media which is playing a very positive role in national development.

He said that national business leaders Tariq Sayeed and Iftikhar Ali Malik have devoted a good chunk of their life to create linkages among businessmen aimed at improvement. Now what we need is enhanced interaction, Sohail stressed

Women enterprisers will be provided more opportunities: Senator Ghulam Ali

Dated: June 23

Islamabad:

President Federation of Pakistan Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FPCCI), Senator Haji Ghulam Ali on Thursday said women entrepreneurs have been given more opportunities to excel.

He said that he will facilitate meeting of Islamabad Women's Chamber of Commerce and Industry (IWCCI) with Prime Minister and President who are very concerned about welfare and development of 52 per cent of the population of Pakistan.

Speaking at a reception hosted in his honour by Samina Fazil, President IWCCI, Haji Ghulam Ali said that government has provided Rs 60 billion to BISP for social welfare; it can also help business women by providing interest-free loans.

He said that FPCCI will promote women entrepreneurs, boost their presence in business delegations and arrange women-specific tours to foreign countries so that they can have exposure and enhanced trade opportunities.

The FPCCI President also assured women of provision of a plot for Chambers building and grant from TDAP.

Earlier in her welcome address, Samina Fazil, President IWCCI, demanded 25 per cent presence of women in all foreign business trips, conferences and seminars.

She said that male-dominated business chambers should amend rules and support women to help them become self sufficient.

Samina also demanded FPCCI to help establish a display centre in Islamabad to encourage the cottage industry run by women and arrange financial literacy programmes.

We deserve to have independent workingwomen development programmes by government and private sector, Samina underlined.

Others present on the occasion included VP FPCCI Fazal-e-Elahi, Chairman Capital Office FPCCI, Hameed Akhtar Chadda, President RCCI Syed Ali Raza, Chairmen of FPCCI Standing Committees Malik Sohail, Tariq Mehmood and Arif Rafique were also present.

Tariq Mehmood stressed information to women about good borrowing practices, proper business planning, productive use of the loan, repayments, avoiding over-indebtedness, increase in savings, and knowing consumer rights.

Of 1.6 million microfinance borrowers some 100,000 enterprises are exclusively owned by women, said Tariq.

Arif Rafique pointed out that low literacy and social constraints are barring women, especially micro- entrepreneurs from avenues through which they can grow their businesses and increase contribution.

Malik Sohail lauded the struggle of women and offered full cooperation. He said that women will soon overcome all obstacles.

He said it is responsibility of men to support women wherever they need help otherwise country cannot climb ladders of success.

UNODC and the Government of Pakistan convene successful regional border cooperation meeting

The United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime and the Government of Pakistan organized a Paris Pact Expert Working Group meeting on regional cooperation in Islamabad on 21-22 June 2011. Attended by more than 69 participants from 30 countries and organizations, UNODC experts from Central Asia, Afghanistan, Pakistan and Headquarters, the meeting resulted in consensual operational and concrete recommendations to enhance controlled deliveries and related frameworks. These recommendations will now be submitted for final approval by the Paris Pact Policy Consultative Group Meeting in Vienna later this year.

A partnership of more than 50 countries and international organizations, the Paris Pact Initiative is aimed at combating Afghan opiates trafficking, consumption and related problems in the affected priority countries along the Afghan opiates trafficking routes. The Expert Working Group meeting took place under the Paris Pact consultative mechanism, which facilitates periodical consultations at the expert and policy level between partners, in order to jointly discuss, identify and set in motion concrete measures to stem the increasing level of opiates trafficked from Afghanistan.

Jeremy Douglas, Representative UNODC, stressed the importance of themes covered by the expert working group meeting “To effectively counter transnational organized crime, law enforcement agencies need procedures that can define this cooperation. This is perhaps most crucial and obvious in light of the common challenges faced by the trafficking of Afghan opiates, that Pakistan is particularly vulnerable to due to its proximity to Afghanistan.”

“Pakistan has been actively participating in controlled delivery operations and the success of these operations depends on trust between countries and I see this developing at least in the region. Pakistan assures you of its continued cooperation and commitment to sincerely continue the fight against drug trafficking” stated Major General Syed Shakeel Hussain, Director General, Anti Narcotics Force, as he closed the meeting.

The Paris Pact 3rd Ministerial Meeting will take place on 8 December 2011 in Vienna to review progress made to counter the trafficking of Afghan opiates and define the way forward.
