The Pakistan Economy Watch (PEW) on Sunday said power generation and distribution network should be handed over to private sector.

 

Government has failed to address acute energy problem which has made lives of common people and business community miserable and put brakes on the growth, it said.

 

Rulers prefer to bury their heads in sand by ordering ad hoc measures; bureaucracy seems to be more interested in barring investment in energy sector while concerned ministries are too much focused on rental power which has proved useless, said Dr. Murtaza Mughal, President PEW.

 

Power ministers of the current regime have been promising since years to overcome load shedding; these claims were never taken seriously owing to government's lack of commitment, he said.

 

Similarly, top government officials frequently announce that few hundred megawatts have been added to the system but how was that materialised is never disclosed, he added.

 

Dr. Murtaza Mughal said that government has failed to implement decision to close markets in peak hours to save energy which also speaks of lack of will.

 

He said that international donors as well as investors are not ready to invest in Pakistan's energy sector while concerned departments are not ready to facilitate Chinese investment which is unfortunate, he said.

 

He said that plans to build mega hydro power projects have hit snags, import gas and electricity from Iran, Middle East and central Asia could not be materialised while Thar Coal reserves are waiting for exploitation.

 

Successes of the government on energy front are only visible in official record and newspapers while there is nothing on the ground, he said.

 

In this scenario, he said, government should seek apology from masses on ailed promises and consider handing over power generation and distribution system to private sector in stages.

 

There is no dearth of capable, honest and dedicated individuals in Pakistan's private sector who will try best to serve nation, he said.

Customs Intelligence seized 656 Million worth of heroin and opium

 

Customs Intelligence, in two separate operations, recovered and seized 8kg heroin and 84 kg opium valued at Rs 4.7 million and Rs.11.04 million respectively, including the vehicles.

In pursuance of specific information that an attempt would be made to smuggle foreign origin heroin from Khyber agency to Punjab via Motorway (M-1) and ultimately abroad, on 04.07.2011 customs officials mounted surveillance near Peshawar Toll Plaza, M-1. At about 1400 hours, the suspected Toyota Corolla Car bearing registration No. ACJ-697 (Sindh) coming from Peshawar side was stopped. On cursory checking presence of drugs was detected in the car. The driver of the car namely Muhammad Ashraf S/O Ahmed Gul R/O Sheikh Mal Khel, Landi Kotal, Khyber Agency was taken into custody and the car was brought to I&I, Regional Office, Peshawar. Detailed search of the car led to the recovery of 08kgs heroin concealed in the secret cavity specially designed for the purpose. The heroin and the vehicle valued at Rs: 4.7 million have been seized under the customs Act, 1969 and the CNSA, 1997. FIR No.46, dated 4.07.2011 has been lodged and further investigation is in progress.

In another operation on 06-07-2011 at about 1100 hours, customs officials intercepted a suspected Nissan Trailer bearing Rg.No.AE-1445 (Hyderabad) on G.T. Road, Chamkani, coming from Peshawar side. Cursory checking revealed presence of drugs in the vehicle. The driver of the trailer namely Naeem Abbasi S/O Muhammad Younas Khan R/O Azad Kashmir was taken into custody and the trailer mounted with 40 feet empty container was brought to I&I, Regional Office, Peshawar. Detailed search of the trailer led to recovery of 84kgs opium concealed in the secret cavity made behind the driver's cabin. The opium and the vehicle valued at Rs. 11,040,000/- have been seized under the customs Act, 1969 and CNSA, 1997. FIR has been lodged and further investigation is in progress.

International market value of heroin ad opium seized is estimated at Rs: 320 million and Rs.336 million respectively.

Raza Khan, Chairman Coordination, FPCCI on Friday said Pakistan and China are bound together through various bonds and our friendship is to grow further in days to come.

 

Our relations more enduring than mere trade and political ties, our hearts beat together, and we will continue to work together to advance ties for a better future, he said.

 

He was speaking at a farewell reception hosted at his residence in honour of the outgoing Director Visa Section, embassy of the People's Republic of China in Islamabad Mr. Xiang Shan, and to welcome incoming Director Visa Section Guan Zhongqi.

 

Other Chinese diplomats including Askar Tursan and Jiang Yinpeng, Chinese Muslims settled in Pakistan and leaders of business community were also present on the occasion.

 

Raza Khan said China should enhance investments in energy and infrastructure of Pakistan and take more steps that benefits Islamabad from Beijing's boom.

 

He said that our culture is different yet we are incomplete without each other therefore Chinese people and businesses need to expose them more to Pakistanis for a better experience, closer interaction, and endearing friendship, he demanded.

 

Pakistan's future is tied to the highly successful and economically powerful China; we need to know more about each other and find similarities, he said adding that improved translation technology can help bring people of two brotherly countries together.

 

Raza Khan said that the conduct of outgoing diplomat is an excellent example of the people who have contributed to the development of close relations hoping that the incoming official will work tirelessly for this noble cause.

 

At the occasion, Xiang Shan assured that China will continue to play a key role in Pakistan's development and exchanges will be augmented.

 

Guan Zhongqi said that he is new in this country but highly impressed with the depth of the friendship, love and devotion of locals.

 

Askar Tursan said that our nations and our people must continue to cherish our shared ideals while enhancing economic and cultural interaction.

 

Our people shall become even better friends and allies, together we can lead the world to peace and prosperity, said Jiang Yinpen.

WFP TO HELP SINDH COPE BETTER
WITH DISASTERS


Karachi – As part of efforts to boost emergency preparedness and capacity to deal with disasters, the United Nations World Food Programme (WFP) today handed over a mini-van and a Flospan warehouse to Pir Bakhsh Jamali, Director General of the Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) Sindh. Dr. Zafar Qadir, Chairman of the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA), senior government representatives, Carl Paulsson, Head of Programme, WFP Pakistan and Irfan Malik, Head of Programme, Sindh were also present on the occasion.

While further handing over the keys to DG PDMA, the Chairman NDMA, Dr. Zafar Qadir thanked WFP for their technical and material support and said "WFP's response in the wake of man-made as well as natural disasters in Pakistan is much appreciated and we assure UN system agencies of government's support and cooperation at all levels."

WFP, co-chairs Disaster Risk Management (DRM) Steering Committee,   is working closely with NDMA to build the capacities of the affiliated institutions so as to respond more effectively respond. Overall, equipment worth 8.6 million rupees has been procured for Sindh.

"WFP has been more than a partner to us, they have not only provided food in the relief camps during floods but building additional capacity of the PDMA by providing storage warehouse, van for search and rescue operation and VSAT for communication is much appreciated. This will enable us to cope well with the upcoming disasters." Said Pir Bakhsh Jamali, DG PDMA Sindh while receiving the keys of mini-van.

WFP has provided a warehouse with a capacity of 500 metric tons to stockpile food and non-food supplies to meet emergency needs. A  VSAT satellite communications system has been imported for the mobile response team of PDMA Sindh. The mini-van will help Search and Rescue teams of Karachi City Council.  


"We are working closely with NDMA and PDMAs to make sure that these institutions have enough capacity and equipment to respond in emergency situations like floods or earthquakes," said Carl Paulsson, Head of Programme of WFP Pakistan.

WFP has also been organizing "school safety programmes" for five districts of Sindh, which include Thatta, Dadu, Tharparkar, Jacobabad and Shadadkot and Community Based Disaster Risk Management activities are also planned in these districts. WFP is also in the process of procuring 10 more warehouses, each with 300 metric tons capacity, for 10 hazard-prone districts, out of which two will be installed in two priority districts in Sindh province.

"WFP is also buying 20 speed boats to boost preparedness in the flood-prone districts across Pakistan. Of these, seven will be allocated to Sindh. We will work out with the NDMA how these boats will be used", Paulsson added.

WFP has developed community-based drought early warning system for Tharparkar district, whose forecasts for the 2009 and 2010 monsoon rainy seasons were roughly accurate. Data is being collected regarding the current season.

According to my information, two officials of RIUJ got enraged over the disclosure of this massive scam involving millions of dollars and tortured a journalist in the premises of National Press Club.
The gang is also looking to settle score with two more journalists who acted as traitors to inform whole community about the scam.

Can anybody confirm reports that some very important leaders of journalists' community including office bearers of RIUJ, NPC and  APNEC have been black listed for entire EU and UK for trying to smuggle out some non-journalists in the garb of journalism after taking heavy bribes from them.
According to reports, Hungarian Embassy, Islamabad interviewed a group of journalists who applied for visa along with hospitality arrangements by Hungarian government. Due course of interview, some non journalists exposed, consequently, embassy black listed the entire group of applicants along with journalists under the charge of human trafficking.
According to non-confirmed reports, FIA has initiated inquiry into the scam in response to complaints from various embassies and interrogated and honorable RIUJ office bearer at NPC recently. 
There are also reports that a group of 7- important journalists have already been black listed for UK. According to non-confirmed reports total number of black listed journalists has arisen to 65 which include almost all important office bearers of journalists bodies.

Mr. Ghous Bux Mahar said the recently on the completion of 60 years friendship of Pakistan and China would open a new era of the closest relations for the centuries to come.

Mr. Chen Jin Vice Minister of the Communist Party of China who is currently first time visiting Pakistan on an official visit along with a high level delegation of specialists and experts expressed that he was deeply impressed to witness the deep love of the people of Pakistan for their Chinese brothers, which confirmed that the hearts, minds and cultures of both the nations were close to each other and have resulted in the strongest ties.

Senator Ms. Nilofar Bakhtiar said that the untiring efforts of the CPC have made China as role model for the whole World. Earlier, the students of Roots School presented the National Anthems of Pakistan and China and some Chinese songs, which were appreciated by the participants of the seminar.

FBR's Clarification
 

Federal Board of Revenue refutes the contents of a report appearing in a section of the press and reiterates that the assigned budget targets for the FY 2010-11 has been achieved, according to the provisional data. This data, as per prescribed practice, would be firmed up during the course of this month and the final figures would be issued thereafter. It may be noted that adjustments and corrections are a part of the normal accounting procedures. Based on the ongoing rendition of account and reconciliations, the FBR shall shortly issue the final data for public information. At present, there is no change in the provisional revenue collections announced on 30th June, 2011.

Islamabad: (July 06 )--Rishad Bathiudeen, Minister for Industries and Commerce of Sri Lanka on Wednesday said his country aims to boost economic, trade and commercial ties with a genuine friend like Pakistan.

 

He said that Sri Lanka is Pakistan's biggest trading partner in Saarc outside India and we share common perceptions on many regional and global issues.

 

Speaking to business community at FPCCI, Capital Office, Bathiudeen said that the current bilateral trade volume stands at $338 million which can be increased with the help of private sector.

 

He said that balance of trade has always been in favour of Pakistan which is contributing to economic development of a brotherly country.

 

Sri Lankan High Commissioner to Pakistan Jayalath Weerakkody, Raza Khan, Chairman Coordination, FPCCI, Hameed Akhtar Chadda, VP, ICCI, Tauseef Zaman, Shahid ur Rehman, government officials as well as businessmen of both countries were also present on the occasion.

 

The minister said both governments have agreed to provide enhanced opportunities to the private sector to interact to benefit from untapped potential.

 

Plans to cement links and other steps to further encourage Pakistani investors are on the cards, he added.

 

The Lankan Commerce Minister invited Pakistani investors to his country saying that strong post-war growth potential is an opportunity for everyone.

 

Pakistanis can get trade concession in all the countries and groupings of which Sri Lanka is a signatory, he informed adding that we urgently need some fifty thousand head of cattle from Pakistan.

 

At the occasion, Raza Khan said that 8.1 per cent growth, per capita GDP hike to $2400 and economic freedom standing at 57.1proves that investors have trust in policies of Sri Lankan government.  

 

He said that decision to allow 100 per cent owner ship to foreign investors without needing a local partner will attract heavy investments in geo-strategic placed country.  

 

Visit of Rishad Bathiudeen will prove a significant milestone in the history of both countries and will go a long way in fastening the ties, said Raza Khan.

 

He thanked the minister for inviting FPCCI delegation and assured participation in international exhibition and business forum "Expo2012," scheduled March 2012.
