                Pak Wapda girls take the third position after disposing of Blochistan girls 2-0 in the play-off match played here on Thursday at Pakistan Sports Board Jinnah Stadium of the 7th National Women Football Championship.
                Wapda were quite unlucky, as they were far better side in the yesterdays semifinal against Diya Club, where they played exceptionally well and made some excellent moves, but to the great credit of Diya goalie all their efforts remained unsuccessful and they were beaten on plenty's by Diya Club. Wapda girls putting their disappointment aside played like true champions against a lively Balochistan side, who go well beyond expectations of many pundits by reaching so far in the event, and they also played well on Thursday too.
 
               Wapda started the match in fine style as they continue to press for an early goal, their efforts bore fruit in the 13th minute of the first half when their ace striker Mehwish provided them a much needed goal with her solo effort. Mehwish had played exceptionally well throughout the tournament and provided her side goals when they needed most, she once again step in to cool the nerves of Wapda players.
 
               Mehwish was playing a sole striker and after missing a couple of good goal scoring chances she finally manages to put her side ahead through a neatly taken free kick from the edge of the circle after a foul was committed on her just outside the circle. Mehwish step forward to take the free kick and she never disappointed with her kick as the ball go past the diving Balochistan goalie in to the net. Wapda girls keep on pilling the pressure and in the 34th minute of the first half Rafia Parveen doubled their lead when she scored from a Mehwish pass. Despite getting two goals lead Wapda continues their onslaught on Balochistan goal with attack after attack but they didn't succeed in further enhancing their lead till the end of the first half.
 
               After the restart of the second half it was expected Wapda will make further inroads and score more goals, but to the surprise of many a resilient and rejuvenated Balochistan side hold on bravely a barrage of Wapda attacks. Despite launching several attacks on Balochistan goal Wapda girls remained unsuccessful o further enhance there lead and the match finished at 2-0 in favor of Pak Wapda. 
               Tomorrow will be the final of the championship between defending champions Young Rising Club and Diya Club at Jinnah Stadium. The final will start at 3:30 pm.

BISP Chairperson to visit Turkey

 

ANKARA, 29 September 2011: In order to generate support for Pakistan's largest public sector social safety net initiative, Chairperson of Benazir Income Support Programme (BISP) Ms Farzana Raja, will be visiting Turkey from 3-6 October as Special Envoy of the President of Pakistan.

 

Leading a 5-member delegation, Ms Farzana Raja will be meeting with the Turkish leadership including H.E. President Abdullah Gul, Deputy Prime Minister H.E. Mr. Ali Babacan, Minister for Family & Social Welfare H.E. Mrs. Fatima Sahin, President of the Union of Chambers and Commodity Exchanges of Turkey (TOBB) H.E. Mr. Rifat Hisarciklioglu and President of Housing Development Administration of Turkey (TOKI) Mr. Ahmet Haluk Karabet.

 

BISP is Pakistan's national social safety net initiative, aimed at providing financial assistance to the poorest in order to promote human development and alleviate poverty through providing access to income generating activities. The programme has received praise and recognition in the international community.

IOM Rushes Contingency Shelter Stocks from Punjab to Flood-Hit Sindh

ISLAMABAD: IOM has diverted 7,000 emergency shelter and non-food relief item (NFI) kits from a contingency stockpile in Punjab to meet huge demand for emergency shelter in Pakistan’s flood-stricken Sindh province.

The kits, each of which contains two plastic tarpaulins, ropes, two blankets, a kitchen set, a bucket and a jerry can, will complement 2,000 kits still stockpiled in Sindh and will be distributed by IOM and shelter cluster partner agencies in districts prioritized by the Sindh Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA.)

These include Umerkot (2,000), Tharparkar (1,000), Tando Mohammed Khan (1,000), Tando Allah Yar (1,000), Mirpurkhas (1,000), Sanghar (2,000) Shaheed Benazir Abad (1,000).

IOM has already distributed some 17,000 shelter kits to flood victims in Sindh. 

 “We have local NGO partners willing and able to distribute these kits to flood victims who desperately need our help. Distributing these contingency stocks without guaranteed donor funding to replace them is a high risk strategy, but it is a risk that we have to take,” says IOM Hyderabad Head of Office Arshad Rashid.

On September 18th IOM appealed to international donors for US$14.6 million to procure and distribute emergency shelter and non-food relief items to help over 550,000 vulnerable flood victims over the next three months.

The money will go towards providing shelter and non-food relief items, meeting the needs of displaced people in temporary settlements and relief camps, tracking displacement, building local capacity and coordinating the work of the Emergency Shelter Cluster.

Last week IOM, working closely with a local NGO FIF, which provided a boat, delivered shelter and NFI kits to families stranded on mud banks in a sea of flood water in Badin district’s Tando Bago sub-district.

The community, located about a mile from the town of Judho, had been cut off from the town for nearly a month. Their submerged mud houses had been completely destroyed and their only surviving possessions were wooden charpoy string beds and a few quilts and rice sacks that they had floated to safety and used to build makeshift shelters.

A village elder told IOM that the only aid they had received had been a delivery of rice by navy personnel in a zodiac inflatable.

Many people were sick from drinking dirty water or were suffering from malaria and all the crops in the area, including cotton, rice, tomatoes, onions and chili had been destroyed by the floods, he added.

“Unless the water recedes by next month, which seems very unlikely, they also won’t be able to plant their wheat crop – which means they will lose another food staple,” says IOM Operations Officer Sher Sultan, who led the distribution.

Based on government and independent assessments, the UN believes that nearly 5.5 million people have been affected by the floods in Sindh. As many as 1.8 million have been displaced and are living in government relief camps, on roadsides or on higher ground near their submerged homes.

An important meeting of the Peace Parliament Pakistan is scheduled on October 02 at Islamabad. Decision in this regard was taken in a meeting held here today.

 

The meeting was attended by organisers of the Peace Parliament including Dr. Murtaza Mughal, Amjad Alvi and Jaweed Ali Bhatti. Members and supporters were also present on the occasion.

 

The meeting will discuss ways and means to ensure peace in the country which is of paramount importance.

 

Majority of the people are living under the poverty line and democracy did not get any institutional shape, it was observed.

 

It is obligatory on the government as well as all the people of Pakistan to strive for peace without which development of society was impossible, the organisers said.

 

Maintaining peaceful coexistence among peoples and ensuring peace and avoiding conflicts belong to the most essential tasks of the mankind

[Pak-Media] India: Muslims' poverty - Phd student set herself on fire

At Aaghaz Foundation, we routinely handle cases of students who are in desperate situations, but we've rarely come across anything so heart-breaking and gut-wrenching as this story of a young Muslim Phd student Tabassum, who set herself on fire in March this year because of crippling financial conditions. She suffered serious burn injuries but was fortunately saved from dying.

The 25-year-old took this drastic step because her family was debt-ridden and there was no money in the house to fund the treatment of her ailing father. Tabassum was the only earning member in the family, employed at Lucknow's Integral University as an assistant in the IT department.  
 
After her case was referred to us by one of our members, Aaghaz volunteers Masood and Tariq visited Tabassum several times and also interacted with her family members and neighbours.  Considering the sensitivities, it took us several weeks before we could find a common link who could approach the family without hurting their sentiments or making them feel uncomfortable.  
 
According to our findings, Tabassum is deeply repentant of  her action, which she describes as a step taken in a moment of mindless rage and frustration. She is trying to piece together her life and wants to make a fresh start. But this is easier said than done. She needs money for her own treatment. Her father, Mohd Usman is completely bed-ridden. He used to run a small pharmacy shop, but it is shut down. Tabassum is the sole-bread earner and besides her ailing father, has to also look after two younger brother who have dropped out of school -- but her main priority, according to the assesment of our members, is Rs 15,000/- which she urgently needs for treatment for another three months  
 
As a rule,  Aaghaz Foundation doesn't give money for anything other than education. But this  time we are making an exception. We have decided to employ Tabassum part time at a monthly salary of Rs 5,000/- for three months. She will work from home. Her job will be to compute the records of students benefitting from Aaghaz.  This will help her in her most immediate requirement -- Rs 150,00/- money for her treatment  
 
Your pity, in this case is not enough. Tabassum is an exceptionally bright girl -- it is a marvel that despite such insurmountable odds, she is doing a Phd. How many girls do you know like her?   Please give your suggestions on how we can help her in the long term.

लखनऊ, 17 मार्च (जासं) : इंटीग्रल विवि में पीएचडी की छात्रा तबस्सुम (25) को उसके घर के हालातों ने तोड़ दिया। पिता का बेहतर इलाज व बैंक का कर्ज चुकाने की जिद्दोजहद में वह अवसाद का शिकार हो गई। आर्थिक तंगी के जंजाल ने उसे इस कदर हताश कर दिया कि गुरुवार शाम उसने अलीगंज सेक्टर क्यू चौराहे के पास खुद को आग लगाकर जान देने का प्रयास किया। आसपास मौजूद कुछ लोगों ने किसी तरह युवती की जान बचाई और उसे सिविल अस्पताल ले जाया गया। पुलिस के मुताबिक युवती का 25 प्रतिशत शरीर झुलस गया है। उसकी हालत खतरे से बाहर बताई जा रही है। कच्चा हाता, अमीनाबाद निवासी नसीर उस्मानी की बेटी तबस्सुम गुरुवार सुबह घर से गुडम्बा स्थित इंटीग्रल विवि गई थीं। पुलिस के अनुसार तबस्सुम इसी विवि में कम्प्यूटर लैब में सहायक की नौकरी भी करती थी। जहां से वापस आने के दौरान शाम करीब 5:45 बजे तबस्सुम ने अलीगंज में सेक्टर क्यू स्थित कामायनी पार्क के पास खुद पर कोई ज्वलनशील पदार्थ छिड़ककर आग लगा ली। पुरनिया चौकी प्रभारी राम प्रसाद यादव ने बताया कि वह एक प्लास्टिक की बोतल में ज्वलनशील पदार्थ साथ लेकर आई थी। युवती को जलता देख आसपास मौजूद लोगों ने सड़क किनारे पड़ी बालू डालकर किसी तरह उसकी जान बचाई। तभी घटना की सूचना पाकर टीजी मोबाइल पर तैनात सिपाही प्रकाश यादव व अन्य पुलिसकर्मी वहां पहुंच गए और उसे सिविल अस्पताल ले गए। इसी बीच छात्रा के मोबाइल फोन की मदद से पुलिस ने घटना की सूचना उसके घर वालों को दी। कुछ देर में ही तबस्सुम के भाई व अन्य रिश्तेदार भी अस्पताल पहुंच गए। डेढ़ साल से बिस्तर पर पड़े हैं पिता पुरिनया चौकी प्रभारी के मुताबिक तबस्सुम ने बताया कि उसके पिता को करीब डेढ़ पूर्व लकवा मार गया था। तब से वह बिस्तर पर हैं। पिता के इलाज के लिए बैंक से काफी कर्ज लिया गया था, जिसे अदा करने में काफी दिक्कतें आ रही थीं। पुलिस के मुताबिक कर्ज वसूली के लिए दो दिन पूर्व बैंककर्मी तबस्सुम के घर भी गए थे। तब से वह ज्यादा परेशान थी। इस परिवार को मकान खाली कराने की चेतावनी भी दी गई थी। वहीं एक रिश्तेदार के मुताबिक तबस्सुम के पिता का हुसैनाबाद में मेडिकल स्टोर था लेकिन बीमारी व कर्ज की वजह से व्यवसाय भी पूरी तरह से चौपट हो गया। उसके तीन भाई नदीम, अजीम व मोंटू हैं पर वे कोई रोजगार नहीं करते। सीओ अलीगंज आनंद कुलकर्णी का कहना है कि आर्थिक तंगी व पिता का बेहतर इलाज न होने से छात्रा कई दिनों से अवसाद में थी।
