Musharraf strongly condemns workers' arrest

 

DUBAI – October 2, 2011: Former President and chief of All Pakistan Muslim League (APML), Pervez Musharraf, has strongly condemned the arrests of party workers in Lahore. Musharraf dubbed the arrests of Abdullah Sardar and Mobashar Ahmad by the Punjab government as undemocratic and a violation of the constitutional rights of the individuals.

 

The workers of the APML were staging a peaceful display of Musharraf's visuals and placards at Kalma Chowk when the law enforcement agencies arrested the two party workers. APML leadership denounced the arrests and expressed their surprise at the gross violations of democratic rights of the people of Pakistan. Musharraf demanded that the workers be released with immediate effect to avoid any further aspersions being cast on the political integrity of the Punjab government.

Billionnaire racehorse owner and playboy the Aga Khan has paid out
£54 million to divorce his second wife. 


Six years ago, his split from his German-born former pop singer wife, the Begum Inaara Aga Khan, was billed as potentially the most expensive divorce in history with a £500 million price tag.

But on Friday, papers filed at the Appeal Court in Amiens in northern France revealed a deal with his second wife, Begum Inaara, has finally been struck – at a tenth of that figure.

The Aga Khan – who is worth £6 billion, owns 600 racehorses and has homes on five continents – moved legal proceedings across the Channel in the hope of getting a better settlement than he would have expected in the UK.

And last night he appeared to have saved himself a fortune by shifting the case to France.

The payout is by far the largest ever awarded in France, where civil settlements are comparatively low.

The deal between the Aga Khan, 73, and the former Gabriele zu Leiningen is understood to include the Berkshire estate where she lives with their 11-year-old son, Prince Aly.

The settlement follows claims by Begum Inaara, 51, that her husband was seeing an air hostess.

Papers filed in the French court reveal that relationship between the Aga Khan and his wife had 'irretrievably broken down' within a couple of years of their society wedding on the Aga Khan's estate at Aiglemont, north of Paris, in 1998. 


The court papers stated his wife hired a private detective to track his movements with the air hostess. 


The revelations will be a huge embarrassment for the Aga Khan. He is the spiritual leader of 20 million Ismaili Muslims, who donate significant sums to him and worship him as their god, or 'bringer of light'.

The Aga Khan is a British citizen but spends most of his time across the Channel, meaning that French judges were able to draw a line under divorce proceedings that had failed to reach a settlement at London's High Court in 2004. 


The French court ruled that the Begum should receive the £56 million on the grounds that the couple had a secure relationship for at least two years. It overturned a lower court award of just £10.3 million.

The Aga Khan divorced his first wife, Sally Croker-Poole, a former English model, in 1995 – paying £20 million to the mother of three of his children. 


His second wife, born Gabriele Homey in Frankfurt, was previously married to German royal Prince Earl-Emich zu Leiningen. They divorced in 1997.

The Aga Khan's divorce settlement is dwarfed by that of UK-based Russian oligarch Boris Berezovsky, who in July paid his ex-wife Galina between £165 million and £220 million. 


That shattered the previous record UK divorce payout of up to £60 million by Madonna to Guy Ritchie in 2008.

A source close to the divorce case said last night: 'I'm sure that the Begum is thrilled with the settlement. She is not going to want for anything.'

The Aga Khan now spends most of his time on his estate near Chantilly, north of Paris. He was not available for comment.

The Pakistan Society Watch (PSW) on Sunday demanded limits on sending text messages so that millions of subscribers receiving unwanted messages can get some relief.

 

Millions of text messages are sent and received daily which help officials to claim achievement and support operators to expand business.

 

However, authorities and companies seems little concerned about the its impact on society and trouble it causes to subscribers, said Syed Makhdoom Abbas, President of the PSW.

 

Cell phone owners receive dozens of unsolicited commercial messages, poetry, jokes, rumours, appeals etc on daily basis due to the facility of sending thousands of text messages against a small payment.

 

Frequent campaigns by operators inviting consumers to spend more in the name of lucky draws and quizzes to win gold, cars and costly gifts etc has added to the problem.

 

Bulk SMS packages have helped many to start m-commerce business without realising that people respond negatively to unwanted text messages; he said adding that ethics should not be compromised for profits.

 

Syed Makhdoom Abbas said that unlimited SMS packages should be discontinued and a limit of 50 messages per day should be imposed on every mobile phone subscriber.

 

This will not end spamming but it will reduce the number of fraudulent messages and inconvenience to 108,894,518 subscribers, majority of whom are victims of privacy violations, he observed.

 

He said that a large number of youth have addicted to SMS which is compromising their abilities; this should be a matter of concern for the authorities.

 

Sending content to unsuspected recipients on their wireless devices having viruses has become a hobby for many, he disclosed.

 

Demanding improvement in e-commerce regulations, Abbas said that consumers should have right to disallow all or some messages through operator's helpline.

Islamabad: WFP Deputy Executive Director for Operations, Mr Ramiro Lopes da Silva, arrived in Karachi on Thursday, September 29, 2011. He is traveling to the flood-affected districts and also to meet with high-level provincial government officials. After arriving in Islamabad on Sunday for meetings with the Prime Minister and the Minister of Foreign Affairs to discuss the needs and WFP's response to the current flood disaster.

During the press conference Mr. Silva will share his experience in the field and discuss the ongoing WFP response to the current floods. He will also share the highlights of his meetings with the senior officials of the government.

Ramiro Armando de Oliveira Lopes da Silva became Deputy Executive Director in March 2010.
Prior to this appointment, Mr. Lopes da Silva served as WFP's Director of Emergencies and Deputy Chief Operations Officer. In addition to his WFP responsibilities, Mr. Lopes da Silva was the UN Assistant Secretary General and Humanitarian Coordinator for Iraq from 2002 to 2004, subsequently becoming, in 2004, Senior Advisor to the United Nations Under Secretary General for Humanitarian Affairs.

Government asked to facilitate women entrepreneurs

TDAP's disappointing performance irks business community

Islamabad: Islamabad Women's Chamber of Commerce and Industry (IWCCI) on Sunday said law and order situation and energy outages have taken toll on the women entrepreneurs which badly needs government's support to revive businesses.

 

Businesswomen should be given relaxations so that they can play their due role in development of society, said Samina Fazil, founder President IWCCI while speaking at a hurriedly called meeting.

 

Newly elected President IWCCI Alia Akram, VP Naima Ansari and members of the Executive Committee Mumtaz Akhtar, Sajida Anwar, Munazza Arif, Shereen Jaweed, Samina Akhtar, Farida Rashid, Shamim Aftab and others were also present on the occasion.

 

Samina said that different government departments including Trade Development Authority of Pakistan (TDAP) and its Women Entrepreneur Section have always claimed to facilitate and promote women entrepreneurs but the facts are otherwise.  

 

"We don't get any support, through promotion and facilitation which amounts to denying us of right to expand and grow," she said.

 

She said that we are victim of neglect by TDAP which is frequently blamed for inefficiency, lack of direction and commitment by business community.

 

Heavy amount is collected in the name of Trade Development Fund but its proper utilisation remains questionable, she said.

 

TDAP has disappointed many exporters who have started participating in important international exhibitions on their own, Samina said adding that ministry of commerce should see why TDAP is spending huge budget without producing results.

 

She demanded that TDAP should provide subsidy to women entrepreneurs and include them in domestic and international trade exhibitions otherwise it will be difficult for women to participate in such events.

 

Pakistan will never be able to improve its share international trade unless working of departments dealing with exports is streamlined, said Samina.
