PEW urges to use tourism for national development

Pakistan should benefit from Chinese tourism spending

Tourist dollars to boost forex reserves, employment

Islamabad: [April 13]

The Pakistan Economy Watch (PEW) on Wednesday said government needs to turn tourism into a key driver for socio-economic development and poverty reduction.

Pakistan needs and draw advantage from Chinese tourism industry, the world's fourth largest that ranks third in total outbound travel spending, it said.

China is poised to become world's number one economic power while western nations and struggling to sustain growth rate.

At present, 25 million Chinese are travelling each year; the number is expected to double by 2020. This means that they would be spending $590 billion per annum, said Dr. Murtaza Mughal, President Pakistan Economy Watch (PEW).

Government should plan to attract Chinese tourists for the sake of development as they feel very comfortable in Pakistan, he demanded.

Our exemplary relations have done little to attract Chinese tourists, he said adding that Pakistan's share in Chinese leisure spending remains very low, said Dr. Murtaza Mughal.

Anyone interested in tapping China's booming tourism sector should first understand their needs and expectations.

Majority of Chinese travellers are reported to be dissatisfied with arrangements in the tourist destinations which is an opportunity for Pakistan's hospitality sector.

He said that Chinese tourists are current spending around 295 billion dollars which is just the tip of their tourism iceberg.

Attracting tourist dollars can make an important contribution to our foreign exchange earnings, create employment and benefit backward areas.

We should realise that he business volume of tourism has surpassed that of oil exports. It has become one of the major players in international commerce therefore it cannot be neglected any more, said Dr. Mughal.

New UNICEF Representative for Pakistan takes up his post

Islamabad, April 13, 2011: Mr. Dan Rohrmann has presented his credentials to the Government of Pakistan as the Representative of the United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF) in Pakistan.

Mr. Rohrmann will be leading the UNICEF team in Pakistan to continue the early recovery for children and women following the devastating monsoon floods in 2010, as well as overseeing UNICEF's programmes in health, nutrition, water and sanitation, education and child protection as part of the UN Delivering as One Programme.

A major feature of UNICEF's work in the immediate future entails support for the Presidential Programme to Eradicate Polio, in which UNICEF is a partner with the Government of Pakistan and many other global partners.

Mr. Rohrmann has wide experience of working in a number of UN agencies. Prior to his current assignment in Pakistan, Mr. Rohrmann was responsible for providing strategic direction and guidance for UNICEF's global programmes.

"I am truly excited to be leading UNICEF's important work in Pakistan and I have felt warmly welcomed since my arrival. It is an honour to work for children in Pakistan, including those most vulnerable and disadvantaged," said Mr. Rohrmann.

Mr. Rohrmann joins the UN Country Team at a crucial moment for supporting the Government of Pakistan to achieve the Millennium Development Goals and accelerate results for the most vulnerable and disadvantaged children.

About UNICEF
UNICEF is on the ground in over 150 countries and territories to help children survive and thrive, from early childhood through adolescence. In Pakistan, it works with the government, NGOs and other partners to support child health and nutrition, good water and sanitation, quality basic education for all boys and girls, and the protection of children from violence, exploitation, and AIDS. It has provided vital relief and reconstruction support to help individuals rebuild their lives after emergencies, such as the 2010 monsoon floods and the October 2005 earthquake. UNICEF is funded entirely by the voluntary contributions of individuals, businesses, foundations and governments.

Dear Sir,

I don't think we must take sides at all just because we do not like someone. The same questions apply to all political parties regardless. Whether it was a success or not at least I do not know. From your post I come to know such an activity took place. But let me quickly make a point here:

We must judge someone not by folklore, accusations or what you want to see and hear but what the guys or the party is saying and wants to accomplish. Lets go by facts not fiction. If they are against the landed class and the wretched feudalism then it is very good for Pakistan

The only way to neutralize them (MQM) is by all parties having in their manifestos a "land reform program" that has not been addressed genuinely from Sher Shah Suri's time.

All parties must include "Rural Land Ceiling" to a maximum of 56 acres per head and not more than 14 acres under a dam or a canal so that more share the resources than less. Total not exceeding 56 acres.

The excess land must be taken over by the state and distributed among the poor fairly. Do this and you will remove wind from the sails those we hate most for whatever real or supposed reason. Just imagine what will accrue:
  1. The land lords will loose their teeth
  2. Eventually the Parliament will be of the people, by the people and for the people. Common Pakistani will sit in the parliament not land lords like now.
  3. The armed dacoits will loose their safe havens, police can then lay hands on them which they can't now as they hide in their huge land holdings.
  4. Law and order will come back.
  5. Self employment will be generated, purchasing power will go up.
  6. The demand of consumer goods and every thing will go up. Don't import then but manufacture.
  7. Manufacturing sector which is the back bone of any developing country will usher in a new era.
  8. Education then cannot be stopped. Now it is not allowed because the land lord wants to keep him uneducated for want of cheap slave labor.
  9. There will be an economic boom of unprecedented proportions.
These were just some quick points. Think on these lines which is positive and we will usher in a new era of love, affection, fraternity and comradeship. Hate is no way of dealing with our our co-citizens. This will foster a new understanding between citizens.

Sorry this was a quick and fast reply as I was just about to proceed for some work. Will write in detail later Inshallah.

Dear Media Colleagues

Please find attached below and attached an official press release on the news with latest updates and statements from the Danish Navy and the captain of the rescue ship team. Urdu version is also hereby attached

16 Pakistanis freed from somali pirates by danish navy

Islamabad- Sixteen Pakistanis and two Iranians have been freed from Somali pirates after the Danish Navy carried out an air-raid operation to rescue the Pakistani hostages who have been in the custody of Somali pirates since last year.

On April 2, the Danish Navy's rescue team was attacked by open fire by the pirates after which the rescue team responded through fire and conquered the ship and its crew.  The team boarded the vessel off Somalia's coast targeting an Iranian fishing boat that the pirates had used as a mothership. The rescue operation was backed by aircraft support.

The Danish Navy Spokesperson Kenneth Nielsen confirmed that 15 Somali pirates have been arrested from the ship out of which three received injuries in the operation. All of them are being held in custody of ESBERN SNARE, a Danish ship that is part of NATO's counter-piracy force. The Danish Navy also recovered arms, weapons and other equipment from their possession.

The Captain of ESBERN SNARE has expressed great pleasure in being able to have the pakistani crew on his ship and participate in their joy. According to him, the freed hostages have been able to call their families from the Danish ship and "are safely on their way back home".

Kenneth Nielsen has said that no decision has been taken about what to be done with those captured. The possibility of legal prosecutation is under review and the case has been handed over to the Attorney of Special International Crime.

The freed hostages have on their own request been brought back to their own ships enabling them to sail back to their domestic areas.
The wounded pirates are so far being treated by doctors, Nielsen added.

Four Pakistanis were onboard an Egyptian vessel that was captured by Somali pirates last year. Another ship from Malaysia carrying five Pakistanis was hijacked by the pirates on November 26, 2010 while two more Pakistanis were among hostages of a hijacked ship belonging to the UAE on March 26, 2010. The Companies that own these ships were negotiating with pirates to release their crew members since long but the pirates showed great stance and resistance in any compromise. In March 2011, the Somali pirates sent out the threat to kill four Pakistani hostages if $20 million was not paid to them in ransom by mid March.

In the past year, the Somali pirates have been responsible for numerous kidnapping cases of official crew members from companies around the world, including families traveling on sea. Their criminal activities have become of high concern among the international community and called out for concerted, global action against piracy on the high seas.

The Danish Participation in NATO's Anti-Piracy Operations

On 17 August 2009, NATO's North Atlantic Council (NAC) approved the Alliance's latest counter-piracy operation, Operation Ocean Shield. The operation is NATO's contribution to the international efforts to combat piracy off the Horn of Africa and is focusing on at-sea counter-piracy operations. This operation builds on the experience gained during Operation Allied Protector and Operation Allied provider, NATO's previous counter-piracy missions.

Since 5 August 2010, Denmark has contributed with a support ship, ESBERN SNARE, including crew and a helicopter.

Denmark previously contributed to Operation Ocean Shield with the support ship ABSALON from late January until the middle of March 2010

NICL scandal: Ex-FIA head accused of obstructing investigation

Waseem Ahmed allegedly prevented investigators from cooperating with UK authorities

The former head of the Federal Investigation Agency (FIA), Waseem Ahmed, is among those who have been asked by the organisation he led until last week to respond to allegations of obstructing the progress of the investigation of the National Insurance Company Ltd (NICL) scandal.

Other officials summoned to respond to the accusations include Ahmed's personal secretary, both the current and former heads of the National Central Bureau (the Pakistani liaison with Interpol) and other investigating officers.

The investigation against Waseem Ahmed began after a former NCB official, Mirza Sultan Saleem, testified that he had been reprimanded and transferred out of the NCB by Ahmed, allegedly for sharing financial information about one of the principal accused in the case – Moonis Elahi – with the Serious Organised Crime Agency (SOCA) in Britain."How dare you exchange information with SOCA without my permission?" Ahmed is alleged to have said to Saleem.

"He was very furious," said Saleem. "He was not ready to hear me out. He said that he had been reprimanded by Interior Minister Rehman Malik because of my actions. He asked me to leave the file (about Moonis Elahi's UK account) and get lost."

Saleem added that Ahmed had said: "Malik woke me up at 2.30 am, expressed his serious displeasure and said that it is an insult to me that information is being exchanged about Moonis Elahi."

Moonis Elahi is a member of the Punjab Assembly from Gujrat, belonging to the Pakistan Muslim League Quaid, and the son of former Punjab chief minister Pervez Elahi.

Saleem was removed from his position at the NCB and later transferred to the National Accountability Bureau (NAB).

The FIA officials investigating the matter claim that Saleem's statements and account of what happened have been verified by others who worked at the NCB at the time.

In a statement to be produced before the Supreme Court on April 14, FIA officials accuse the former director general of withholding letters that the FIA had written to UK authorities seeking information and cooperation, with the aim of slowing down the investigation into the NICL scam.

The letters were to be sent by the FIA, through the NCB, to SOCA in Britain. However, Waseem Ahmed withheld them for more than twenty days, according to the FIA affidavit.

FIA investigators eventually succeeded in securing the cooperation of the British authorities in freezing Moonis Elahi's accounts in the UK.
