Traveling Nature Carnival 2012

Islamabad, February 25th, 2012: The World Wide Fund for Nature - Pakistan (WWF - Pakistan) in collaboration with Indus Motor Company (IMC) will be hosting the 12th Annual Traveling Nature Carnival on Sunday, February 26th, 2012 at Fatima Jinnah Park (insde Bolan Gate) from 9:00am to 4:00 pm.

The Nature Carnival is an event aimed at enhancing awareness about nature conservation among students and the general public through interactive games and competitions. WWF – Pakistan and IMC will host an array of activities including an Art Competition, Quiz Competition, Essay Competition, Interactive 3D Model making competition, Magic Shows, Environmental Puppet Shows, a Lucky Draw, live music and an environmental theatre. The carnival will also have interactive games, activities and food stalls.

WWF - Pakistan has been working on environmental education for the past two decades; the traveling nature carnival is an integral part of its school outreach. This year, to increase the scale of the Nature Carnival, WWF - Pakistan collaborated with IMC to promote its School Environment Programme.

Over 80 schools and 20 colleges and universities across Rawalpindi, Islamabad Nowshera, Kharian, Jhelum and Peshawar are participating by constructing 3-D models and giving live presentations at the venue. More than 100 project stalls will be installed on various themes such as; Habitat conservation of endangered species (Snow Leopards, Green Turtle, Dolphin), Water Conservation, Solid Waste Management: Recycle, Reuse & Reduce, Energy Conservation - Alternate Energy, Tourism Vs Eco-Tourism: Explore Wetlands of Pakistan for eco-tourism, Documentaries on Industrial pollution/Solid Waste Management and Sustainable Eco-Architecture/ Agriculture/ Climate Change, Mitigation and Adaptation/ Alternate Energy.

The Travelling Nature Carnival is a culmination of these joint environmental endeavours. The funds-raised from the carnival will go towards WWF - Pakistan's conservation projects.

[Pak-Media] The Big Debate: Who Will SAVE Pakistan?

I hope that you are in the best of Imaan & health. On behalf of the organisers I would like to invite you to the debate titled "Who will save Pakistan?" on 2nd March at 7pm. It will be convened at The Pakistan Community Centre, White Abbey Road, Bradford BD8 8EG.

The debate will focus on the following:

1) Security from continued American and NATO drone strikes and the US sponsored terror bombings.

2) Economic crisis with electricity shortage and poverty.

3) Political Leadership requiring accountability and transparency.

After the presentations by the representatives of the Political Parties there will be plenty of time for the delegates and media to raise questions and participate in the debate.

Samina Fazil, founder President, Islamabad Women's Chamber of Commerce and Industry (IWCCI) on Friday said more and more women are entering into a world of massive unemployment with limited options.

She said that men manage the family's financial affairs therefore most of the women who enter into business have no experience with money which jeopardise their plans.

Samina Fazil said this after inaugurating an expo titled Spring Fiesta organised by Lubna Shahbaz.

Underlining the importance of first-time grants, microloans and training, she said such moves can help young women learn economic skills and launch small businesses successfully.

Government, NGOs and banking sector should realise that prosperity is tied to empowerment of women and facility of loans to expand or diversify.

Samina said fighting poverty to eradicate hunger is only possible if government undertake a well-funded women empowerment plan to across the country.

She demanded projects to help women learn networking, business planning, marketing, financial record-keeping and banking skills.

IWCCI is holding an expo in Islamabad on April 7-8 which will help build capacity of women, she informed.

At the occasion Lubna Shahbaz said that experienced businesswomen should be paired with new to provide guidance and counselling creating a bond of female solidarity that is integral to success.

She said that sustainable, grassroots and women-centred strategies should be adopted to end hunger and inequality.

Lubna Shahbaz said women bear almost all responsibility for meeting basic needs of the family but they are systematically denied the resources, information and freedom of action.

Dr. Laila Hassan said that the vast majority of the world's poor are women while two-thirds of the world's illiterates are female.

She said that food prices have forced many to compromise on food but women are hardest hit many of whom are denying them even one meal to ensure that their children are fed which is a great threat to our future.

School, Poets, Journalists visit the Historical city of Takht-Bhai

Eminent scholars, famous poets and senior coloumnists of Peshawar visited the historical ruins of Takht-Bhai on Sunday Feb 19, 2012. The visit war arranged by President of Pakistan society of Criminology, Fasihuddin (PSP). The 50 members delegation, including 20 famous lady writers and poetesses of the Women Writers Forum, was led by veteran coloumnist and Secretary General of Abasin Arts Council, Mr. Mushtaq Shabab. Members of the Pashto Literary Society of Takht-Bhai and Uthman Khel Qaumi Movement welcomed the guests. Prof. Pir Zahir Shah and famous Pashto Poets Gul Muhammad Gran, Waseer Lewanay and Javed Khattak presented their poetry and spoke to the guests on the academic and social activities in Takht-Bhai. Later on a Mushaira was held which was the first Hindko-Urdu-Pushto Mushaira in Mardan Division in which poets and poetesses of all the three languages presented their literary work and poetry and received a great applaus. Prof. Nasir Ali Sayed presided over the Mushaira where as renowned author and poet Prof. Nazir Tabbassum performed as stage secretary, well-known scholar, poet and coloumnist Prominent amongst them were Aziz Ejaz (MD, PTV), Ismail Awan, Prof. Hassan Hur, Prof. Sabeeh Ahmad, Prof. Tanvir Ahmad Khan, Sophia Ahmad, Bushra Farrukh, Prof. Ishaque Wardaq, Shakeel Nayab, Hammed Hassan, Rani Bano, Sameena Qadir, Salama Qasir, Zoobi, and many more. It was an excellent gathering of scholar and writers who enriched the audience with their views and melodious poetry.

WFP TO BUILD 1.5 BILLION RUPEE STORAGE AND TRAINING FACILITIES FOR NDMA

ISLAMABAD – The United Nations World Food Programme (WFP) and the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) have agreed to bolster the country's response to future emergencies by the construction of state-of-the-art storage and training facilities at nine locations in Pakistan.

NDMA Chairman Dr. Zafar Iqbal Qadir and Acting Humanitarian Coordinator and WFP Country Representative, Mr. Jean-Luc Siblot signed a Memorandum of Understanding  today in Islamabad.

WFP plans to construct nine Humanitarian Response Facilities across the country – worth more than 1.5 billion rupees -  to build national capacity to be better prepared for future emergencies.

Under the agreement, WFP will enhance the storage capacity of the NDMA and the PDMAs, enabling them to preposition around 30,000 metric tons of emergency stocks of food, non-food and medical supplies for the humanitarian community.

"I am confident that these facilities will ensure a robust, effective and timely response to possible future emergencies, " said Mr Siblot.

While WFP will build the facilities and provide the required trainings to government and humanitarian staff, the Government, will be responsible for the management and maintenance. The proposed sites for construction are Gilgit, Peshawar, Lahore, Quetta, Muzaffargarh, Hyderabad, Muzaffarabad, Sukkar and Islamabad.

The facilities will include covered storage, mobile storage units, equipped office space  prayer rooms, large open areas for training and temperature-controlled spaces.

Australia, Canada, Denmark, Japan and the Netherlands have provided funds to WFP to support the Humanitarian Response Facilities.
