Thirty-five UNICEF-Constructed Schools Inaugurated in Flood-Affected Districts of Southern Punjab

                                               

Islamabad, January 4, 2012 – The United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF) and partners today welcomed the opening of 35 new schools in Muzaffargah, Rajanpur and Rahimyar Khan in Southern Punjab, three districts hit by the 2010 monsoon floods. These schools have been constructed by the children's agency at locations where schools were damaged or completely destroyed by the floods that devastated Pakistan from July to September 2010.

More than 4,500 children are now attending these schools which have been handed over to the Punjab Education Department.     

The Embassy of the Kingdom of the Netherlands has contributed US$1.2 million for the construction of 24 schools and the Organisation of Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC) has contributed an additional US$250,000 for the construction of seven schools. Funds for four schools have been provided by the governments of Italy, Hungary and Sweden. 

The Ambassador of the Kingdom of the Netherlands, H.E. Hugo G. Scheltema, inaugurated 24 schools constructed with Dutch funding at a ceremony held recently, in the Peer Dargai Shah Government Primary School in Muzaffargarh district.  

Speaking on the occasion, the Mr. Scheltema said, "There is no doubt that education is the key to progress for any nation. I feel delighted to see these beautiful schools that UNICEF has built to help the children in the flood-affected districts of Punjab. Increased enrollment after floods and the keenness of parents to send their children to school makes it very clear that there is need for more schools and more teachers. I am sure that UNICEF will manage to build more schools and the Punjab Education Department will provide more teachers to ensure that every child is educated." 

After the devastating floods of 2010, UNICEF initiated a schools reconstruction proragmme in the worst affected districts of southern Punjab – as well as other parts of the country – since most of the government school buildings were either damaged or completely destroyed. In order to bring children back to school and to prevent the loss of a full academic year, Temporary Learning Centres were established by UNICEF in camps and communities. With time, prefabricated school structures with all amenities have replaced these temporary learning centres. These new schools signify a new method of teaching and learning – the Child Friendly Schooling approach. 

"The Child Friendly Schooling approach is interactive and makes learning fun for children. It has elements of health and hygiene through provision of safe drinking water and improved sanitation, Early Childhood and Development for preparing young children for school, playground and equipment for healthy physical activities, psychosocial support for rehabilitation of trauma-affected children, involvement of parents and community, and many other unique features that makes education attractive," said Karen Allen, UNICEF Deputy Representative.

"Dutch funding has helped us achieve the objective of providing quality education to children who had suffered due to floods. This is an investment that not only fulfills their basic rights, but also contributes to the future of Pakistan. I urge all parents, teachers and community members to take ownership of these schools and ensure that every child of school going age is in school, especially girls", she added.

CAIR Condemns Firebombing of NY Mosque

Islamic institutions, local police asked to step up security

(WASHINGTON, D.C., 1/2/2012) –- The Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR) today condemned a firebomb attack on a New York mosque that occurred while worshippers were inside and urged Muslim institutions and local police to step up security measures.

The firebombs were thrown late last night at the Imam Al-Khoei Islamic Center in Queens while up to 80 worshippers were in the mosque. There were no reports of injuries. Two nearby homes were apparently targeted by the same attackers.

"Attacks on our nation's houses of worship must be condemned by all Americans and should be investigated and prosecuted using all available law enforcement resources," said CAIR National Communications Director Ibrahim Hooper.

He said CAIR is urging local police to boost patrols near mosques and is asking members of the Muslim community to review security procedures using advice contained in its "Muslim Community Safety Kit."

Hooper noted that CAIR recently called on the FBI to investigate threats of violence targeting mosques posted on the anti-Islam hate site "Bare Naked Islam," including calls to use violence and religious desecration to prevent the construction of a New York mosque.

A comment on that hate site stated: "What's all this p*ssy-footing??? Throw 10 Molotov cocktails into these mosques and burn them down even with a**-lifters in them, especially with a**-lifters in them."

The hate blog's author wrote: "The mosque may go up, but it will never stay up." Commenter "angel" wrote: "I hope the tough Russians will burn this mosque to the ground many times over until the a**lifters get the message." "GrouchyFogie" wrote: "Bomb the things to the ground, THEN burn them." "Burnerjack" wrote: "THAT'S not an attack. An attack is boarding the doors while the mosque is full and then fire bombing it. THAT'S an attack. I'm just saying."

In the past year, mosques or mosque construction sites in Massachusetts, Oregon, Ohio, New York, Iowa, Maine, Georgia, Missouri, Louisiana, Tennessee, Texas, California, and Michigan have been targeted by arson, vandalism or threats.

In May of 2010, a bomb exploded at a Florida mosque. A recent fire at a Kansas mosque is still under investigation.

Prime Minister while addressing the
parliamentarian and to audience in a gathering at Islamabad expressed concerns regarding the
conspiracies against elected democratic regime and the parliamentary democracy.
While unearthing it in the national assembly he seemed reluctant on the
instruments of the government which come under subordination of the Chief Executive-
an elected prime minister. The reason why that harsh position was taken was

Majority of the political analyst were

that I.S.I disbursed millions from national exchequer among the politicians
against then sitting government?

Gillani's uproar on floor of the house
has received much attention of all those democrats who do believe in weaker
democracies better than stronger dictatorships. They are alleging the later in uniform responsible for enormous
lingering on unresolved issues. Military dictatorships have ruled over Pakistan more
than half of its total age. Ever they are come with reformation agendas and
with charming slogans. But the history reveals that their prescription is gone
failure and is wrapped up by end of their prolonged tyranny. Heroin culture, arms
in the hands of children, religious outfits –Tahreek-e-Taliban and suicide
bombers are the remains dictatorships in the society.  Their Pseudo leaderships are discarded in the very
next general elections if the whole process is not engineered and rigged. They start
disintegrate by removal of the porous umbrella of the dictators upon them.

No one raise question on legitimacy of
the present set up as it has been emerged  comparatively after fair election held on February
18, 2008. Even after successes and the failures at several fronts, vast majority
of Pakistanis is comfortable with the democracy. Consensus in this connection
is also found that the present elected regime must complete its tenure. They
are seemed concerning over recent incidents after suspected memo that have misbalanced
the best ever civilian – military equation. Both initiator of the suspect memo
and the petitioners might have achieved their goal of diminished coherence
among the institutions. Mr, Gillani timely did reiterate it to military establishment
that how his government defended and gave them morale in war against terror, 2nd
May 2011 and Salala check-post aftermaths. People are asking why their defense,
for which they are paying huge cost at the expense of health and education, becomes
ineffective in curbing aggression of enemies. Why NATO forces that were killing
Pakistani Soldiers on Pakistani soil for about two
and half hours were not responded?  We
don't waste a minute in criticizing failures and bad governance of the civilian
leaders but we hesitate in raising questions about failure of security agencies
in safeguarding our sovereignty.

Leaders of the opposition parties and well
wishers of democracy do urge Mr. Gillani to take strict disciplinary action if
the situation exactly is prevailing. Supremacy of the constitution that has
also been acknowledged by chief justice of Pakistan must not be compromised. If
any institution interfering in the others predefined domain, must be stopped in
a very moment.  Expecting such historic
change is easy to say but difficult to materialize the suggestion. Besides, several
renowned journalists who receive threats, leaders of human rights' commission
Ms. Asma Jahangeer also admitted her failure in bringing the drastic
institutionalized change by saying that "no one is born to rein the political
wing of military establishment." What would be the consequences if this is done
and if all the transgressors regardless their positions and offices are fired?

Why Asma is Scandalising The Supreme Court

 

Asma Janhangir is scandalising and harassing Supreme Court as its observations in the memo case were not as per her expectations.

It would have been OK for her if the SC has shown tilt in her favour.

She is exactly playing a role that the lawyers of ZAB played and she may get harsher punishment for Haqqani.

Sources say that she was interested in getting the post of Attorney General which she couldn't.

Now government has promised her slot of law minister on the condition of showing positive progress in the memo gate.

She might have felt that her case is weak which has left her off the balance.

 پاکستان سے ہر سال کھربوں ڈالرز کی منشیات بیرون  ممالک اسمگل ہو رہی ھے۔ جس میں پاکستانی انسداد منشیات فورس اور کسٹم حکام کےبھی ملوث ہونے کا انکشاف ہوا ھے۔ ایک سروے رپورٹ کے مطابق گزشتہ سال 2011 کے دوران برونائی، ملیشیاء، تھائی لینڈ اور سنگاپور کی سیکورٹی فورسسز نے سینکڑوں ایسے پاکستانی گرفتار کیئے ھیں جو پچھلے دروازے سے پیسہ کمانے کے چکر میں منشیات سمیت ان ممالک میں گرفتار ھوئے ھیں، جن میں کئی غیر ملکی افراد بھی ملوث ھیں جو پاکستان سے ان ممالک کو اسمگلنگ کرنے آئے تھے، دوران تفتیش ان گرفتار افراد نے پاکستانی انٹی نارکاٹیکس فورس اور کسٹم کے کئی افسروں کے نام بھی بتائے ھیں، جو پاکستانی ایئرپورٹس اور بندرگاھوں سے منشیات کلیئر کر دیتے ھیں،  جس کے بعد ان ممالک کی حکومتوں نے یو این او ڈی سی سمیت پاکستانی حکام کو بھی ان افراد کے ملوث ہونے کے متعلق فہرستیں بھجوائی ھیں، اس وقت تھائی لینڈ کی جیلوں میں 39 پاکستانی منشیات اسمگلنگ کے الزام میں گرفتار ھیںبرونائی میں 6 پاکستانی، ملیشیاء میں 87 اور سنگاپور کی جیلوں میں 23 پاکستانی منشیات اسمگلنگ کے الزام میں بند پڑے ھیں، جن میں کئی افراد کو موت کی سزائیں بھی سنائی جا چکی ھیں، جبکہ سینکڑوں پاکستانی منشیات پار کرنے میں کامیاب بھی ھو چکے ھیں، اس دھندے میں ملوث ہونے پر ان ممالک کے شہری بھی گرفتار ہوئے ھیں، گزشتہ سال ٢٠١١ کے دوران ان ممالک میں ١٩ کھرب پاکستانی روپے تک کی منشیات پکڑی جا چکی ھے۔ جبکہ اس مالیت سے زائد کیمنشیات اسمگلررز پار کرنے میں کامیاب ہو چکے ھیں، ان ممالک کی جانب سے کئی بار پاکستان سے منشیات سپلائی کرنے والے ٹاپ اسمگلروں کی فہرستیں پاکستانی حکام کو بمعہ ثبوت ارسال کی جا چکی ھیں مگر ملی بھگت ھونے کی وجہ سے پاکستانی حکام نے ابھی تک کوئی کاروائی عمل میں نہیں لائی۔

Cash grant, power bill waiver can support cultivators

The Pakistan Economy Watch (PEW) on Tuesday said expected intervention of the government in the cotton market to stabilise prices will not benefit small growers but hoarders.

Planning Commission has already termed interference against the free market mechanism while Ministry of Finance has expressed its inability to provide funds to Trading Corporation for procurement.

The Prime Minister has not directed the TCP to buy cotton but asked for a detailed report after which different ministries are preparing a paper to be presented in the Economic Coordination Council on Jan 05, said Dr. Murtaza Mughal, President of the PEW.

He said that government should not fall in the trap and consider direct cash grant or waiving electricity bills, abiana etc. to save the growers from any significant economic loss.

Dr. Murtaza Mughal said that textile ministry should not rely on the statistics provided by ginners but also seek feedback from provinces of Punjab and Sindh.

He said that participation of representatives of growers and that of provinces should be ensure in the meetings.

According to the statistics provided by the Pakistan Cotton Ginners Association total production of cotton bales stands at 12598000 while 11036018 have been arrived at ginning factories, 10453017 have been pressed while 9013925 have been sold.

Ginners claim that they have 2022093 bales of unused cotton that needs to be verified through independent sources, Dr. Mughal added.

He said that only 1561982 bales are outside the market for which an intervention can be wastage of resources.

It may be mentioned that The Karachi Cotton Association, APTMA, and sections of the cotton economy have expressed reservations over intervention which has remained counterproductive in some neighbouring countries.
