Discrepancies in voters list, court ceases elections in Blue Area

Dated: October 31

Islamabad: A local court has stopped elections of traders in the Blue Area after allegations of unverified voter lists and partiality of the election board.

According to details three traders of Blue Area Muhammad Qasim, Sohail Mehboob and Ch. Muhammad Arshad who was also running for the post of vice president from platform of Capital Unity Group invoked the court of Civil Judge Mazhar.

The petitioners through Ch. Muhammad Jawed Gujar Advocate prayed that All Traders Welfare Association has planned rigging in the elections to get their favourite contestants elected.

An election board has been formed which delayed release of voters list. The list was released on 28th of October in which names of over two hundred traders were excluded intentionally, they alleged.

The plaintiffs also said that many people who were not traders and have nothing to do with Blue Area have been included in the voter lists to get desired results.

"Even labourers have been shown as traders while only owners and tenants of shops having NTN cards can participate in the election process," the petition said.

The complainants said that they have pointed out the variants in the voters list and requested to delay election until issues are hammered out.

However, they said, the election board refused to grant any request leaving them with no option but to bring law into action.

The court after hearing issued interim relief to the petitioners and called respondents including Chairman Election Board Altaf Gohar, and members Arshad Janjua, Muhammad Afnan, Malik Muhammad Ali, Fayyaz Niaza and Feroz Khan on November 5th.

And what about the lawyer who raped a litigant girl in his chamber in Sialkot.....?
Why the bar associations are silent, although they use to protest even on very petty issues, like scuffle of a lawyer with any low ranked police officer.

WFP News Release

31 October 2011

SINDH GOVERNMENT CONTRIBUTES WHEAT TO WFP FOR MONSOON FLOOD VICTIMS

ISLAMABAD – The United Nations World Food Programme (WFP) today welcomed a contribution from the Government of Sindh province of 8,333 metric tons of wheat for distribution to people affected by the recent monsoon floods in Sindh.

"We are extremely grateful for this contribution, which will be vital in ensuring we can maintain our supply line to the people who still desperately need our help," said WFP Pakistan Country Director Jean-Luc Siblot. "It also sends a message to donors across the world that Pakistan is doing all it can to assist the flood victims."

The contribution from the Sindh Government – enough to provide food to nearly 730,000 people for one month – makes up one-third of the 25,000 tons of wheat pledged by Pakistan to WFP during last month's visit to the country by WFP Deputy Executive Director for Operations, Ramiro Lopes da Silva.

Following a request from the Pakistan authorities, WFP began its emergency operation to provide food rations to people affected by the 2011 floods on 12 September. To date, the agency has succeeded in reaching more than 2.4 million people in both Sindh and Balochistan.

However, WFP still faces a funding shortfall of US$107 million to achieve its target of providing food assistance to the most severely flood-affected up to February 2012. Without further urgent donations, supplies will start running out before the end of November, making it impossible to maintain a full ration. This will leave WFP with no option but to cut the ration size or number of people assisted from December.

While flood waters have begun to recede in recent days, many communities remain cut off and thousands of square kilometres of crops have been lost, with a devastating effect on the livelihoods of millions of people. Farmers say it will be months before they can plant again, leaving them temporarily dependent on food assistance.

Pakistani paintings draw crowds at Art Expo Malaysia 2011

Nearly three dozen paintings drawn by nine celebrated Pakistani artists, including Ismail Gulgee, Jamil Naqsh, Shahid Jamal, Rahat Masud, Bin Qullander and Chitra Pritam, have made the Pakistani gallery at the 5th Art Expo Malaysia 2011 as one of the sought after coroners for thousands of art lovers thronging the Matrade Exhibition and Conference Centre in Kuala Lumpur.

Led by Lahore's famous Ejaz Galleries and represented among others by M. Ramazan, Chief Executive of Ejaz Galleries, and Principal College of Design & Art, University of Punjab, Prof Dr. Rahat Naveed Masud, whose own artworks are also included in the 30 Pakistani art pieces displayed at the six-day exhibition, the Pakistani gallery has been visited by a large number of interested visitors and prospective buyers so far.

The AEM 2011 which was officially opened by Malaysia's Tourism Minister Datuk Seri Dr. Ng Yen Yen is represented this year by over 2,000 works of 400 local and foreign artists, reknowned for their strokes in traditional, modern, contemporary and new-age art. The expo also features pieces by leading international artists, including Pakistan's Ismail Gulgee, Pablo Picasso, Joan Miro, Salvador Dali and Antoni Tapies.

High Commissioner for Pakistan in Malaysia, Mr. Masood Khalid who also attended the exhibition on invitation from the Royal Patron Raja Muda Perlis Tuanku Syed Faisuddin Putra ibni Tuanku Syed Sirajuddin Jamalullail, appreciated the Pakistani artworks and paintings demonstrating the skills of Pakistani artists and their "exuberant style, colour, design and dexterity with the brush".

He said artists like Ismail Gulgee, Jamil Naqsh, Shahid Jamal, Rahat Masud, Bin Qullander and Chitra Pritam and their world-renown paintings had brought laurels for the country from all over the globe. He also appreciated the Ejaz Gallery for playing a major role in enhancing the contemporary art scene in Pakistan by representing Pakistani artists abroad and by curating distinctive shows of local and international artists.

Mr. Masood Khalid said the participation of Pakistani artists and the exhibition of their artworks in events such as Art Expo Malaysia 2011 showcased their talents and allowed them an opportunity to express their ideas in visual arts and engage themselves in exchange of ideas with contemporary artists. "I am sure their contribution would make a great impact on the art scene of Pakistan," he added.
