SDC to provide training to women entrepreneurs on subsidised rates: Farid

Competitiveness must for global positioning: Samina Fazil

Dated: July 05

Islamabad: Mian Akram Farid, Chairman of the Skill Development Council (SDC) on Tuesday said women entrepreneurs will be provided training on subsidised rates.

As a capacity building initiative for women in business, SDC would provide them partial financial support from public funds, he said adding that strong skill development is the key to the economic well-being.

Speaking at a function organised by Islamabad Women Chamber of Commerce and Industry (IWCCI), Mian Akram Farid said that ICCI is establishing a modern Export Display Centre which will provide all possible support women entrepreneurs.

"We will also help women arrange solo exhibitions on economical charges so that they can introduce their products and find new customers," he said.

Chairman SDC said that the housewives can also play a crucial role in the economic development of the country by getting required skills that can make them productive.

There are 3.2 million businesses in Pakistan of which 99 per cent are SMEs but only 3 per cent are owned by women. These businesses contribute to 99 of jobs outside agriculture, he informed.

Similarly rural women are integral part of the economy and entire livestock sector is dependent of services of invisible women, Farid added.

He said that women are more focused on garments, fashion, jewellery and beauty salons ignoring many sectors that badly need their attention.

Farid advised women to explore branding, advertising, e-marketing and start making personal, business and product profile to boost businesses.

Speaking on the occasion, Samina Fazil, President, IWCCI said that government institutions should contact international donor agencies to get services of experts for conducting courses.

She lauded the move by SDC to provide training facilities to women at affordable cost and demanded to increase the number of such courses.

We have been ignoring value addition, quality production and innovation to rely on export of textile-based products which has helped us become a cotton economy which will not bring dividends in the long run, said Samina Fazil.

Pakistan's future lies in strong export driven manufacturing base, modernizing critical sectors, seeking new markets and creating competitiveness for global positioning, she said.

Press Release

GOVERNMENT POSTPONES OGDCL EB TRANSACTION TILL MARKET IMPROVES-PC Spokesman

Islamabad, July 4, 2011

Referring to reports regarding Oil and Gas Development Company Limited ("OGDCL") Exchangeable Bond transaction published/ telecast in a section of print and electronic media during the recent past, a spokesman of the Privatisation Commission (PC) while clarifying the factual situation said that it was the intention of the Government of Pakistan ("GoP") to complete the transaction within the previous fiscal year, however, the international financial markets became extremely volatile towards the end of the fiscal year due to the Greece Crisis and weak economic data emerging from USA. These facts were highlighted to the CCOP and it was decided in the meeting that the transaction would only be launched at an opportune time in the market as and when the markets recover, he said.

Elucidating the details of the process of the transaction, the spokesman informed that Cabinet Committee on Privatisation ("CCOP") approved floating of an OGDCL Exchangeable Bond ("EB") in its meeting held on 8th March 2011. The OGDCL EB allowed for the return of the GoP to international capital markets after prolong gap of four years. It was also decided that due to the hybrid nature of the instrument, Privatisation Commission and Finance Division would jointly manage the transaction. The hiring of a consortium of financial advisors was completed in May when Citibank, JP Morgan, Credit Suisse and BMA were selected from a host of global investment banks, all very keen on the transaction.

He further stated that the CCOP also decided that a series of investor meetings will be held for the GoP and OGDCL in the 3rd week of June in Hong Kong, Singapore and London. A consortium of leading global investment banks comprising of Citibank, JP Morgan and Credit Suisse arranged these meetings for the GoP and OGDCL. These meetings were not roadshows for any specific transaction and no terms of any specific transaction were shared.  The meetings provided the opportunity to GoP to share with international financial market participants the key economic reforms undertaken by GoP, it's planned privatisation program and to showcase strong state-owned entities such as OGDCL, he clarified.

The PC Spokesman added that the meetings were well received by the global financial community. The purpose of the meetings was to familiarize the international financial community with developments in Pakistan, since it has not entered the international capital markets for the last 4 years. The GoP will continue to review its options for accessing the international markets at an opportune time, the spokesman concluded.

Press Release

Pakistanis cautioned against agent mafia misinterpreting Illegal Migrant Workers Program

Pakistan High Commission in Malaysia has advised Pakistani nationals to guard themselves against the agent mafia trying to misinterpret and misuse the Illegal Workers Management Program under consideration by the Malaysian government.

According to details, the Malaysian Government intends to launch Illegal Workers Management Program very soon to register illegal workers of various nationalities in the country through their biometrics and basic personal details. However, no company or individual has been appointed so far by the Malaysian Home Ministry to collect money or any kind of payment from anyone and the companies/individuals falsely claiming to assist illegal workers through this program bear no official sanction, and are merely exploiting the illegal workers and collecting money from them.

The High Commission has advised Pakistani nationals working in Malaysia to avoid any interaction with such fraudulent companies/individuals and make no any payments in this regard. As and when the program is officially launched, a notice will be displayed in the High Commission advising such workers on the further course of action, the statement adds.

The High Commission has also advised Pakistanis back home to stay away from the unscrupulous agent mafia and recruiting agents who are misusing the yet-to-be-launched Illegal Workers Management Program which is, by no means, a naturalization scheme. "Our nationals back home are forewarned and advised to pay no attention to the false 'job recruitment or settlement offers' that have started circulating in Pakistan," adds the High Commission.
