What makes the whole thing even more painful is when we remember that PIA was once the best in Asia. In the 60's.

It's not that PIA  can become the best airline, it's issue of incompetent fools running it. Otherwise look at the airlines in middle east countries. Look at how successful they are, and just think how started those airlines? PIA and Pakistanis did, that's who. It was Pakistan who helped them establish their airlines and trained their pilots. They are successful now while PIA is worst than a 3rd world country. What's the difference? Leadership. The arabs hired (white) people who will follow the rules and enforce the rules. Where as Pakistan continue to put unprofessional and unqualified people in key posts.

Stale PIA, Rotten People to Fly With

Why do we not get ourselves ever to praise our national flag carrier? Well... I've tried my level best. On my last flight I had a chance encounter with the former editor of Hamsafar who, in his 'propah' English (a little more English than the English), 'phraised' all things 'Phee Aai Yeah'. He talked against the 'gorah' who had come to fix PIA and said very proudly that he was 'khicked outh'. Well... To say the least, that 'gorah' happened to be a man with more than 45 years of experience in the airline business and was associated with the world's best airlines including Virgin. By kicking him out we kissed goodbye to the great future of a pagan airline which refuses to grow up or rather grows up to be a refuse. The 'gorah' happened to become a very good friend of mine after he was kicked out and then I knew here was another victim of politics.
The fault does not lie in PIA and its people not willing to admit they can't grow. The fault lies in us that we have been accepting and allowing them to squander our money for their own fun and having the last laugh always at our cost. We are the promoters of our own victimisation and have made the entire nation a butt of joke with what PIA means to us both inland and oversees.
What exactly is the point I am trying to drive? You may ask...
Nepotism, lies, indifference, false sense of pride and dishonesty are rich ingredients of the staff at all levels. I arrived at Islamabad airport well in time for my 4:45pm flight on Monday 23rd May 2011 with my wife and our seat was confirmed booked on 28 April well in advance. The girl at the counter took her own sweet time and refused us entry 30 minutes before the flight saying flight closed. I tried to reason and the supervisor said aloud not to let us in. In this argument a good 15 minutes were wasted and then she very conveniently wrote a wrong time (16:32) and asked me to speak to the supervisor who was smiling all along as if to establish a clear victory on her face for winning the argument.
To cut it short, the supervisor then made a false statement twice saying you people have a habit of coming late and trying to make a fuss. I told her clearly she can be caught for defamation for making a false statement and she reiterated her words saying them with the famous PIA smile of hospitality, "Sir, you may go ahead and do whatever you want to..." There goes PIA, our national pride and there goes our vanity down the institutional drain.
Within minutes some 'chance passengers' were able to get our seats while we looked on in desperation. We paid cancellations while PIA earned more revenue and the chance passengers earned confirmed seats.
Whosoever is reading this will know well why we can't be able to praise our national flag carrier for whatever good it can ever do to us. Because though we do call it the pride of the nation, we as a nation can never get used to flying with an air of false pride. A food for thought.

China`s role and interest In Kashmir must not be dispelled

Spokesperson

 World Kashmir Diaspora Alliance

Muzaffar Abad-24th May 2011

China`s role and interest In Kashmir must not be dispelled by the stakeholders of Kashmir Issue. This was stated by Mr. Murtaza Shibli, Secretary General of World Kashmir Diaspora Alliance (WKDA) in his speech delivered in Kashmir International conference here in MuzaffarAbad

Speaking on the subject of "Emerging new perspectives in Kashmir" Murtaza Shibli emphasized that for any settlement of Kashmir issue through dialogue, China has unique capability of becoming the guarantor of lasting peace given its Geo political and Geo economical proximity with the troubled disputed land of Kashmir  coupled with its growing  military might in the region.

We must not become oblivious of the fact that a part of Kashmir is under the control of China which, as such gives it a position of default in any final solution of Kashmir. Shibli said that China is subtly giving the indications and positioning itself with the presence of its boots in Gilgat and its incursions in Ladakh . Its measured decision to grant staple visa's to Kashmir's holding Indian Passport are signs of its interests and stakes in the region of Kashmir, which cannot be disregarded as meaningless overtures.

WKDA Secretary General lambasted the lack of political will and courage within the Western power Centers, especially the United State and European Union to resolve the conflicts in Asia and Middle East. The international community and United Nation has failed to address the conflicts that have potentially dangerous consequences within the regions of Middle East and South Asia.

Mr. Shibli in his address suggested that a quad lateral dialogue between India , Pakistan China and Kashmir is the only way forward in the emerging geo political and geo economical arena of 21st Century which will be dominated by China particularly in Asia.

Press-Release:

Foreign Experts laud the Role of PJC Research Initiatives.

The Pakistan Journal of Criminology latest issue has been published by the Pakistan Society of Criminology. The recent issue which is the eighth in its series since April 2009, comprises of research-based articles from senior police officers, both serving and retired. The present quarterly is edited by Prof. Rod Broadhurst, a well-known criminologist of the Australian National University. Prof. Boradhurst has commented on the research essays of Pakistani police officers and has lauded the role of the PJC in making an indigenous body of criminological literature and policing sciences. Prof. Rod Broadhurst has critically evaluated the two research articles by Syed Akhtar Ali Shah, (Addl. IGP, KPK) who has written on the "Causes of Crimes in KPK" and the "Role of Madrassahs (Islamic schools) in the Politics of Pakistan". Mr. Shah has given a detailed account of his personal reflections and experiences as a police officer in KPK and has opened a new debate for looking into the causes of crimes in KPK from the perspective of a practitioner, rather than a theoretician.

Former IGP, Mr. Aftab Nabi has contributed his article on "Cattle Theft and Criminal Justice System in the Colonial era". The article is described by the foreign expert as the most interesting which has many guidelines for the present day police to deal with other forms of theft, robberies and dacoities. The recent issue of PJC includes the reprinting of the unavailable 25 years old booklet "Criminal Justice and the Community" by former IGP, M. Y. Orakzai (Late), which contains enormously important and historical revelations that how some new departments like Highway Police, Narcotics Control Board and FIA were initiated and established by him during 70s and 80s, and why these new departments are now lagging behind their original ideas, programmes and purpose. Another great scholar from Canada, Prof. John Winterdyk, Director, Centre for Criminology and Justice Research, Mount Royal University, Canada, has written a detailed evaluation of all the previous issues of Pakistan Journal of Criminology and has opined that, "we all have lessons to learn from one another and through open dialogue and exchange we can perhaps begin to move towards building and sustaining societies that are safe." The recent issue of PJC has raised many questions about police and policing styles and the role of criminal justice systems to fight crime and radicalism.

New, improved tax model suggested

Budget proposals have no significant impact

Tax burden on the poor is gradually increasing

Islamabad: [May 25]

The Pakistan Economy Watch (PEW) on Wednesday suggested an improved tax model that can generate adequate resources for the government without hampering economic growth and provide economic justice.

The new model can help transfer resources to public use in an efficient manner ensuring social justice for weaker sections of the society, it said.

Majority of budget proposals have no significant impact on economic growth as policymakers ignore it, said Dr. Murtaza Mughal, President, PEW adding that it is a useless exercise as unfair tax regulations continue to hurt the growth.

Talking to Chairman Coordination FPCCI, Raza Khan, former president ICCI Nasir Khan, former president RCCI Hussain Osgzan and other business leaders, he said that over-taxing the economy while avoiding taxing favourite sectors is putting the economic and revenue system down.

Avoiding concerns of genuine taxpayers and emphasis on meeting revenue targets without considering its impact on the economy is a self-defeating exercise carried out in a mechanical way, he added.

Dr. Murtaza Mughal said that concentration on industrial expansion can provide much-needed funds without hurting the honest taxpayers which is yet to be realised.

Tax system needs to be transformed in an equitable, realistic, investment-oriented and business-friendly arrangement, he stressed.

For this, he said, issues like amnesty schemes favouring tax evaders, alliance between the evaders and officials, steps supporting parallel economy, unprecedented exemptions, avoiding taxing speculative transactions, ignoring abusive tactics of multinational companies and oversized state machinery needs to be resolved.

Keeping public representatives away from whole process, reliance on the foreign experts, lack of meaningful interaction with the taxpayers, and facilitating monopolies are also matters of great concern, he said.

At the occasion, Raza Khan said that tax burden on the poor is gradually increasing; poor pay over 20 per cent of their income as indirect taxes while rich pay less than10 per cent of their income as indirect taxes which will lead us nowhere.

He said that a paradigm shift is needed to ensure enhanced revenue generation as the real potential of taxes is not 1600-1700 billion rupees but four trillion rupees.

Industrial growth can be triggered if investors are not asked for source of funds. This will also help contain flight of capital and overseas investments that are hurting economy, said Raza Khan.
