URGENT ACTION - UPDATE
--------------------------------
Farooq Ahmad Dar Taken Into Custody

On Saturday the 19th of April 2012 Farooq Ahmed Dar was arrested and taken to an undisclosed location.  He was produced before a Srinagar court on the morning of the 23rd of April where the judge granted the arresting authorities the power to detain him for a minimum of 7 days while they collect evidence and build a case against him.

Dar is accused of carrying out activities that are prejudicial to the security of the state.  In reality Dar, who is Chairman of the JKLF, does nothing more than speak at public meetings  and organise demonstrations.  It is widely believed that the arrest of Dar follows a similar pattern whereby separatist leaders are arrested and detained in order to disrupt their work and discourage others from undertaking the same.

KCEU released an urgent action on the pursuit of Dar on the 19th of April 2012 and we would like to offer our thanks to all of those who undertook urgent action.  It may be for this reason that the arrest of Dar did not result in serious injury or death.

KCEU is again requesting Urgent Action to call upon the Government of India to immediately release Farooq Ahmed Dar.  There are numerous examples of politically active Kashmiris being harassed and arrested.  This can result in incarceration without trial for upto two years under the public safety act.

Please request that Farooq Ahmed Dar is released immediately and that the Government of India desists in the practice of arresting politically active Kashmiris.  Please also request that the draconian laws, such as the PSA and the AFSPA, are repealed in Kashmir immediately.
