MS. HINA RABBANI KHAR THE FOREIGN MINISTER OF PAKISTAN MUST INTERVENE TO OBVIATE THE HARSH JUDGMENT REGARDING DR. SYED GHULAM NABI FAI: HABIB YOUSAFZAI, WORLD KASHMIR DIASPORA ALLIANCE

There is no precedence of struggle for freedom in the annals of history available wherein someone has solely relied  to solve an issue through negotiations as Dr. Syed Ghulam Nabi Fai has done for Internationally Disputed Area of Jammu and Kashmir (IDA:JK). After going through his case it is evident that it was an inadvertent mistake as he was unable to maintain his book of account. He has indubitably proved himself as a skilled arbitrator as he has been favored by all three legitimate parties to the (IDA: JK) such as Kashmiris, Pakistan, and India.

For instance, I recall that I had gone through a Pakistani document regarding the subjects of Kashmir, wherein it stipulated that all the resident of IDA: JK are the citizens of Pakistan. In view of this fact, Dr. Fai is the citizen of Pakistan. More often than not, in any case involving citizens from Canada and USA who face some sort of threat abroad, the Government of Canada or USA utilize the authority of their foreign offices in the recipient country to help the individual evade the problem.

Accordingly, Ms. Hina Rabbani Khar the foreign Minister of Pakistan is therefore solicited to kindly intercede in the matter of Dr. Fai to free him from this erroneous accusation. Meanwhile, a Pakistani Passport should be issued to Dr. Syed Ghulam Nabi Fai to pave a way to appoint him as negotiator for the purposes of resolving the IDA: JK by reinstating the UN resolution of 1948 regarding plebiscite.

Separatists, civil society pitch for justice to Fai

SRINAGAR, Dec 31, 2011: Rising openly in support of Dr Ghulam Nabi Fai, the civil society representatives in Kashmir and the separatists today unanimously passed a resolution seeking justice to the US based executive director of the Kashmir-American Centre.

The resolution was passed at the seminar, 'Democratic front of the freedom movement and Dr Ghulam Nabi Fai', organized here by the Jammu and Kashmir Liberation Front (JKLF)with participation from advocates, academicians, doctors, columnists, journalists, political leaders and the members of the civil society.  The seminar was also to pay tributes to the slain Prof Abdul Ahad Wani .

"…the assembly while taking cognizance of, and noting appreciation of his diplomatic efforts, urges Government of United States, the International community and freedom lovers around the world to recognize the role of Dr G N Fai as a moderating influence in seeking a solution to the unique problem of State of Jammu and Kashmir. His unconditional and unreserved efforts as the son of the soil in bringing together all stake holders, persons of different shades of-opinion Governmental and Non-Governmental representatives together on the negotiating table to evolve a peaceful solution through process of dialogue, constitutes an important basis in judging Ghulam Nabi Fai's involvement in the cause of freedom for his people," read the resolution passed in the seminar. "Defective analysis of the consequences," it read, "of the choice he made needs to be avoided to prevent miscarriage of justice….Expressing their full confidence in the judicial system of U S A, the assembly believes and trusts, that justice will not only be done, but seen to be done to Dr Ghulam Nabi Fai in the days to come and on the awaited occasion."

It was the second resolution passed within a fortnight in favour of Dr Fai.
Earlier on December 24, a resolution was passed by the assembly of civil society members, intellectuals, writers and political leaders at the seminar organized by the Hurriyat conference (G). In the resolution, the participants announced their complete support to Dr Fai.

The chairman JKLF, Mohammad Yasin Malik, however, said the prosecution of Dr Fai would lose America the "constituency" in Kashmir, and that leniency in the case was must for resolution of the Kashmir issue.

"By keeping him (Dr Fai) in jail, is not America losing its constituency in Kashmir? Is it not it creating anti-America sentiment in Kashmir?" Malik asked in his address at the seminar.

"..If Kashmir issue is to be resolved peacefully, the US must show leniency in Dr Fai's case," he said.

Malik urged that both India and America should acknowledge the role played by Dr Fai whom he described as the "peace maker."

"I am not trying to point fingers at the judicial system of that country (US)," he said, "Perhaps there are certain unique norms in the US law and that may be why Dr Fai was arrested. But having said that, I want to clear it to both India and the US that he (Dr Fai) is a 'peace maker' who wants a political and peaceful resolution of the Kashmir issue."
The JKLF chairman cited instances where the lobbyist was involved by New Delhi in the peace process.

"I suggested Dr Fai's name to the Indian government for bringing militants to the table. The suggestion was acknowledged by the then Indian prime minister who actually sent one of his cabinet ministers to meet Dr Fai in America," he said and urged the society to rise in support of Dr Fai.

"…It was him who took Kashmir issues into the US parliament and the senate, and discussed it in Universities across that country. He took Kashmir issue to every US think tank. Today when he is in jail we shall think how to help him to get out of this trouble," he urged.

Malik also paid rich tributes to Prof Abdul Ahad Wani on his 18thdeath anniversary.
'Dr Fai was made scapegoat'.

The Hurriyat (M) senior leader and Chairman National Front, Nayeem Ahmad Khan, however, termed Dr Fai's arrest a result of US-ISI tussle. Dr Fai, he said, was made a scapegoat in tussle between the Pakistan intelligence agency and US.

"The main thing is that the Dr Fai was made a scapegoat in the tussle between ISI and the US. It was the situation changed in 2000 that the US started creating problems for Dr Fai. Otherwise the technical issues were there in the past also, but Dr Fai was never arrested," Khan pointed out.

Seconding the JKLF chairman, he said the US would lose its "constituency in Kashmir" and across the world if it continues to persecute Dr Fai.

"We should pass a resolution and send it to USA that Fai was a man of peace," Khan said.

Advocate Zafar Shah praises Dr Fai Those pleading the case of Dr Fai included advocates also.

The noted lawyer, Advocate Zafar Shah, praised Dr Fai for confessing to his charges.
"To me the greatest moment was when he confessed to the charges leveled in him. I see Dr Fai as the son of the soil with the difference because here we have people yet to confess what they do. We are hypocrites, but Dr Fai as well as Prof Abdul Ahad Wani has been person of great integrity," Shah said.

Dr Sheikh Showkat questions justification to prosecute Dr Sheikh Showkat, professor of law the University of Kashmir, questioned the America's justification for prosecuting Dr Fai for she has never abided by the law. "Has the US always followed law? What law did US follow in Guantanamo?" he questioned.

"Dr Fai was a person who did not lose his integrity in US. He went to US and worked for his homeland," Dr Showkat added and urged the society to follow his example.

"We must be true to our conscience and the same must reflect in our actions. If we do not do that we will be disconnected and separated, and we will become fossils. From these two persons (Dr Fai and Prof Wani) we must learn not to beg." 'Society must stand by him'

The high court bar association president, Advocate Mian Abdul Qayoom, said the society must stand by Dr Fai. "We shall be thankful to those who speak in our favor. And, if Dr Fai has done anything we shall support him. We must acknowledge his support to the Kashmir cause irrespective of him being an agent or not." 'Contribution will go waste'.

Dr Sheikh Mohammad Iqbal, who was presiding over the function, said the contributions of Dr Fai, and people like him, would be nullified if the Kashmiri society continues to do what it has been doing.

"The contribution will be reduced to zero if we continue to do what we are doing," he said, citing the example: "We are selling our land and buying cars."

The others who spoke on the occasion included: Zahid Ghulam Muhammad, Dr Javid Iqbal and Riyaz Masroor.

Movement needs diplomatic front: Yasin Malik

Speakers Hail Dr Fai As Ambassador Of Kashmir

UMER MAQBOOL

Srinagar, Dec 31, 2011: Hailing the contribution of Dr. Ghulam Nabi Fai and Prof. Abdul Ahad Wani in the ongoing struggle, Jammu and Kashmir Liberation Front Chairman Muhammad Yasin Malik Saturday said resistance movement needs a powerful diplomatic front for success.

Addressing a seminar titled "Diplomatic front of the movement and Dr Ghulam Nabi Fai" on the anniversary of the noted legal luminary Prof. Abdul Ahad Wani, Malik said resistance movement cannot achieve success without having a strong diplomatic front for lobbying of the cause.

Asking the United States to take lenient view in the case of Dr. Fai, Malik said, "I don't want to question or confront US judicial system but I would make an appeal to them to take lenient view in Fai's case as he was a peacemaker. It will be their biggest support to the moderate constituency which wants peaceful resolution of Kashmir, without bloodbath and hatred. We need to see Dr Fai on bigger canvass, he was representing peaceful constituency."

Terming Fai as an ambassador of Kashmir, Malik said he always stood for peaceful resolution of Kashmir. "Whenever Kashmiri leaders or intellectuals visited USA, he extended hospitality to them and arranged their meetings with US government officials.  He took Kashmir issue into US Senate, Congress and universities," he said.

Asserting that action against Dr. Fai would create anti-US constituency in Kashmir, Malik said, "Fai is not a person but an institution who always spoke moderate language in United States and other parts of the world."

JKLF chairman also disclosed that he suggested the name of Dr Fai to India for bringing militants on board after initiation of peace process between India and Pakistan in 2004.
"During parleys with PM, I asked for the involvement of militants and PM gave serious thought to my suggestion. I asked PM to approach Dr. Fai to strengthen peace and dialogue," he said, adding that a then Central Cabinet minister also met Dr. Fai over the issue of engaging militant leadership.

Malik said during his meetings with US Assistant Secretary Christiana Roca and advisor of president on south Asia; he pitched for involvement of militant leadership in the peace process.

Praising the contribution of Prof. Abdul Ahad Wani who was killed on December 31, 1993, Malik said international figures were impressed by his intellectual capabilities.
"When United Nations Army General met Wani, he told him if there are 10-15 persons in the world like him there would be a revolution. The US assistant secretary of state Robin Raphel after a meeting with Wani said that she doesn't think US President is more intelligent than him. Shadow Foreign Minister of Labour Party during an interaction with him was taken by his intellect," he said.

Malik said Wani defended the struggle in early 90s and mobilized global opinion in favour of the struggle by his capabilities. "History will never forgive the killers of Wani nor they can be part of civilized society," he said.

Senior separatist leader and National Front Chairman Nayeem Ahmad Khan said Dr. Fai is representing the sentiments and aspirations of Kashmiris. "Entire Kashmir is at his back .America should know that representing the aspirations is not a crime under any law of the world," he said.

Paying tributes to Prof. Wani, Khan said best tribute to the martyrs of Kashmir is to take the ongoing movement to its logical conclusion."Conscious nations don't forget their martyrs," he said.

Senior Hurriyat (M) leader and Ittehad-ul-Muslimeen patron Moulana Abbas Ansari said Kashmiris shouldn't expect any favour from US or other Western powers as their policies are guided by their interests. "We should leave everything to Allah and these powers cannot be of any help to us anyway," Ansari said, adding that leadership shouldn't desist from calling spade a spade. "We should always speak truth," he added.

Former HCBA president Nazir Ahmad Ronga in his speech said that status quo will lead to slavery and "we should accept 1953 position as an interim arrangement." "We are in the search of peace and need way out for the resolution of Kashmir issue. Leadership shouldn't shy away from talking if India is making an offer," he said.

Noted columnist Z. G. Muhammad said Kashmir lacks proper documentation about the heroes who gave their life for motherland. "I have one grouse that none of us tried to document life of our martyrs and their contribution to the struggle," he said, adding that Kashmir is yet to produce any intellectual. "We cannot call a person intellectual who writes for getting award and in real sense the intellectual means who stands by right side," he said.

Senior High Court Lawyer Zaffar Ahmad Shah said both Dr. Fai and Prof. Wani were the men of integrity. "If we look at their personalities they stuck to their integrity despite suffering immensely," he said, adding that "advocate" writers are causing damage to the movement. "If they are getting paid for write-ups, they are misleading the people. They shouldn't write then," he said.

President of High Court Bar Association Main Abdul Qayoom said people need to introspect and choose between right and wrong. "We don't know with whom we are affiliated. During 2008 lakhs of people came on roads but voted in large numbers during assembly elections. Same happened in 2010," he said, adding that masses need to differentiate between benefactors and oppressors. Qayoom added that stable Pakistan was in the interest of Kashmiris and 'its weakness will tell upon our movement.'

Noted journalist Ghulam Nabi Khayal said two decades after the brutal killing of Mirwaiz Moulana Muhammad Farooq, his killers are yet to be arrested.
"After the killing, then director general of police J.N. Saxena told me that they have arrested two persons involved in the killing and third person is absconding. But two decades down the line killers are yet to be identified," he said.

Kashmir University Law department faculty member Dr. Shiekh Showkat Hussain said international community including US cannot be mobilized by petitions. "History stands testimony to the fact that US has always been vulgar culprit and abuser of international norms," he said, adding that its policy is determined by economic interests. "When India opens its markets, Kashmir ceases to be a nuclear flashpoint for US," he said.

Among others, Advocate Sareer Fazili spokesman Kashmir American Council (via telephone), Prof. Shiekh Muhammad Iqbal, Dr. Javaid Iqbal, Abdul Majid Zargar, Dr. Zaffar Mehdi, Prof. Rehman Rahi, Riyaz Masroor, Dr. Altaf Ahmad spoke on the occasion. The speech of JKLF supreme head Amanullah Khan was read by Showkat Ahmad Bakshi while proceedings of the seminar were conducted by Shiekh Abdur Rashid.

On the occasion, a resolution asking US to administer justice in the case of Dr. Fai was passed.

The resolutions says: "An assembly of Kashmiri political formations, jurists, intellectuals, public thinkers, doctors, historians, scholars and civil society was organized by Jammu Kashmir Liberation Front (JKLF) to deliberate upon Dr. Ghulam Nabi Fai's role on the diplomatic front of Kashmiri freedom struggle. The assembly while taking cognizance of, and noting appreciation of his diplomatic efforts, urges Government of United States, the international community and freedom lovers around the world to recognize the role of Dr G.N. Fai as a moderating influence in seeking a solution to the unique problem of State of Jammu and Kashmir; his unconditional and unreserved efforts as the son of the soil in bringing together all stake holders, persons of different shades of-opinion, Governmental and Non-Governmental representatives together on the negotiating table to evolve a peaceful solution through process of dialogue, constitutes an important basis in judging Ghulam Nabi Fai's involvement in the cause of freedom for his people. Defective analysis of the consequences of the choice he made needs to be avoided to prevent miscarriage of justice."

Energy Decisions: Govt reducing country to Stone Age
Govt policies made life of masses a misery in 2011
Business community loses all hope in Govt
No relief in sight in 2012 for masses

Dated: Dec 31

Islamabad: Samina Fazil, founder President, Islamabad Women's Chamber of Commerce and Industry (IWCCI) on Saturday said the incumbent government failed to provide any relief to masses in 2011.

Controversial policies and unpopular decisions have made life very difficult for masses and business community, she said.

The present incapable setup is not expected to bring any change in the next year, said Samina Fazil while speaking to the women entrepreneurs.

She said that there is no shortage of gas and electricity in the country. Gas is being silently provided to some influential sectors while electricity sector is victim of mismanagement where thefts have touched 24 per cent of total production.

Samina said that recent CNG decision will hurt millions of families and businesses, bring new wave of price hike and add to the unemployment and uncertainty as well.

In 2011, on average masses braved 8 hours of load shedding, experienced CNG closure in summer, faced closure of thousands of businesses, saw three per cent fall in GDP, dwindling rupee and unprecedented rise of dollar, political uncertainty, scams worth billions and international disgrace, she observed.

Samina said that the critical sector of petroleum and natural resources is being run as a hospital which proves concern of rulers towards grave issues and plight of masses.

Country is reeling under various issues but the rulers lack interest, care or feeling which is ample proof of their tall claims of pro-poor policies.

She said that business community has lost any hope in the rulers who according to returns do not own a car but lives like emperors.

No relief is in sight in 2012 for anyone except nobility in the presence of an incompetent cabinet, she observed.

Press Release

Crime Reporters advised to avoid dramatization of crimes, Workshop told.
Thursday 29th Dec, 2011
Pakistan Society of Criminology conducted a one-day workshop on crime reporting, its dynamics and effects on society, especially juveniles. Crime reporters of mass media participated in the workshop. Imran Ahmad Sajid, a PhD Scholar spoke about the characteristics and need of a separate juvenile justice system and compared it with the adult criminal justice system, which is not compatible with the international and national laws like the UN CRC and JJSO, 2000. He quoted that in 19 out of 24 districts in KPK, a total of 98 cases were reported of juvenile offences in 2010-11 and it was found that juveniles were involved in 14% murder, 45% hurt/injuries, 4% theft, and 6% drug offences. The data shows a rising trend in violent behaviour in juveniles. Cases as low as 5 and 7 years have been reported against children in the official police data, Imran told. The Regional Director Human Rights, Syed Khizar Shah explained the role and services of the Police Child Protection Center, Peshawar and demanded that such centers should be replicated in other cities. He told that in 2011, a total of 22 juvenile offenders were given protection and legal support.
Fasihuddin (PSP), President Pakistan Society of Criminology, dilated upon the myriad relationship of media and crime and showed different researches that the newsworthiness and content of crime news are mostly centred around violence especially murder and rape. He explained the concepts of crime rate, victimization, evidence-based crime reporting, moral panics, evil monsters and tragic victims. He advised the crime reporters to develop a professional attitude in crime reporting and avoid personalization, dramatization, amplification, exaggeration and sensationalization of crime news which have a psychological and criminogenic effect on public especially young children.

Overseas Pakistanis need encouragement
EC decision distresses overseas Pakistanis

Islamabad: [Dec 29]
The Pakistan Economy Watch (PEW) on Thursday said Pakistanis working abroad have a critical role in the economic development of the country therefore they should be encouraged.

Remittances support millions of needy, reduce poverty and inequality and help government counter impact of dwindling foreign capital inflows, it said.

Pakistan is among top 10 recipients of remittances; it is among the few countries which include these funds separately in the gross national income estimates, said Dr. Murtaza Mughal, President of the PEW.

Talking to Masood Khan, Vice Chairman, Overseas Pakistanis Foundation, he said that those who are sending around one billion dollar a month to Pakistan—around 6 per cent of the GDP-- merits due attention.

He said that recent decision of the Election Commission to bar dual nationality holders from contesting elections will not go down well with expatriates. It is against the basic human rights of Pakistanis living abroad that are as loyal as any other citizen is, he added.

Dr. Mughal said that those keeping the morale of poor economy high should not be demoralised.

At the occasion, Masood Khan said that the dual nationality ban hurt millions. They are not abroad for fun, majority have opted for dual nationality for the sake of survival.

EC's biased decision will deprive many of their legitimate rights. It  can compromise their willingness to invest in Pakistan, said Masood Khan who is also the Consulate General of Lithuania in Pakistan.

Secretary General PEW Mirza Riaz said that the controversial decision has shaken confidence of expats which should be taken back immediately.

We cannot afford a fall in remittances at a time when economy is crumbling and there is hardly any investment in public sector development, industry and infrastructure, he said.

Benazir Bhutto writes to General Ashfaq Pervez Kiayani

By Dr Shahid Qureshi

Benazir Bhutto
Heavenly Villas
Straight Road
27th August 2010
Private & Confidential
General Ashfaq Pervez Kiyani
Chief of Army Staff
General Headquarters (GHQ)
Rawalpindi
Pakistan

My dear Kiayani (saab), Salamalakum,
I hope you find this letter in good health and high spirits. Please accept my sincere condolences for the martyrdoms of the soldiers of our armed forces and those who died in the recent 'doctored and self inflicted' floods. I am quite satisfied and pleased with the hard work our armed forces are doing in the rescue and recovery front as well dealing with the criminals, drug dealers and Indo-US sponsored Tehrik Taliban Pakistan (TTP).
I am gravely concerned about Karachi situation and this statement 'inviting military to takeover' from outsourced MQM leader Altaf Hussain. It is a conspiracy against the Armed Forces. It would be a 'kiss of death' for the army and country to get into politics. I must say MQM (Altaf) has become a 'whore' working under foreign protection as well as entertaining them. Well you know how they transfer money in London from Karachi and which 'Tycoons' of Karachi provide money laundering. They are a bunch of selfish billionaires now who have lost their path. Their 'empowering the poor' ideology is worth following but now they are a 'mafia' of contract killers.
I read in The Frontier Post, few years ago that when Pakistani and Indian forces were eye ball to eye ball, Altaf Hussain issued an internal memo to his party workers stating that: 'MQM workers to be remain neutral in case of war between Pakistan and India'. I know General Musharaf wanted to eliminate them but than he had to sleep with them on Yankee's request.
Kiayni Saab, I frequently discuss Pakistan situation with Papa (Zulifqar Bhutto) who told me last night that greatest danger to Pakistan's sovereignty is "$$ dollar infected corrupt elite". Papa said, 'he is disgusted with Asif (Zardari) as because he is spearheading and main protector of these elites'. I must say some of your colleagues are also in this bunch and you know it very well.
Papa (Z A Bhutto) got upset with the over influence of Qadiyani minority in Islamabad. He asked me to tell you that, "just before my judicial execution with US ropes and local hands, I told colonel Rafuddin (security chief in prison): "These Qadiyanis want the same influence in Pakistan as Jews in the USA i.e. 'all policies should be approved by them". I also told Rafi: 'I believe that God will forgive me for just declaring them non-Muslims with the approval of Parliament. If we look at their beliefs, surely they don't believe in the finality of Prophet Mohammad (PBUH). (They have declared us all non-Muslims long time ago.) I just put the record straight. Papa said, 'my belief in God has proven to be true and here I am in heaven'.
Kiyani saab, I must tell you that though 'Yankees' liked you to be a mediator for Musharaf but I liked you for other reasons since I knew you when you were my young Military Secretary. I find you a true patriotic son of the soil and brave soldier'.
Kiayani (saab) I am very gravely concerned with the fact that 'Yankees' did not allow Pakistani Shabaz Air Base in Jacobabad, on Pakistani soil used for flood relief for Pakistanis.  What kind of contract you have signed which can not be revoked in extreme emergency i.e. life and death of Pakistanis?
Kiayani (Saab), this is something that is for your ears alone. Papa (former Prime Minister Z A Bhutto) was quite cross about. He said: 'Tell me, after what they did to me, even to Ziaul Haq, let alone yourself Pinki (Benazir Bhutto), after all that sad and sordid saga of betrayal after betrayal, why our people are not able to come out of Yankee's Jadoo (magic)? Haven't they read Ayub Khan's aptly titled 'Friends Not Masters'?
I do understand Papa went on, Kiayani is in a tricky situation: he cannot so easily free himself from the bear's embrace but in Hamid Karzai he has a good role model. Karzai is a poodle that not only barks it can also bite. When it bites, they throw more bones at him. The point is, tell Kiayani, if he doesn't detach himself from this deadly embrace, they are going to ditch him any way as they are going to ditch their own president, Barak Obama. I am so far away from the ground where (Gen) Kiayani stands, nevertheless he has to act well before he is ditched.
Smoothly 'Piyar Nal', he should try to walk away. The Yankees need Pakistan more than Pakistan needs them. You only need a small dose of cool courage.
I would like to suggest few things:
  1. I would start survey for the future dams immediately.
  2. It will be a great idea if our army remains engage in reconstruction, rebuilding of the infrastructure i.e. rail, roads, bridges and communication lines.
  3. Specially urge to improve rail network as it is the most important and cheapest way of transport for the poor. May be you remember that after the WW-II Lawrence of Arabia destroyed the rail link,  even now Saudi rail link is only few hundred miles?
  4. You must be careful with selfish gold mining companies from Chile and elsewhere operating in Baluchistan, have same kind of 'dad'. They are also fanning this violence in Baluchistan as well as reportedly funding drone companies. Have a guess about who are buying world's gold and why? Is it a preparation for WW-III?
  5. Why don't you ask our Chinese friends to assist us to improve our rail network? The ANP is on Lawrence of Arabia agenda to tell you the truth.
  6. The idea of allowing or inviting foreign donor agencies to do the projects directly in Baluchistan and other sensitive areas sounds very fishy and may become a bigger problem.
  7. I want you to be careful with the 'Indian gang' sitting with Asif (Zardari) as well as Nawaz (Shairf)'s flirting with the Indians.
Kiayni (saab) between you and me Asif (Zardari) only under stand (jota) shoes language. I am told an old shoeside bomber attacked him in Birmingham with his both shoes. Papa said, 'according to the local police there was a women's shoe also found at the scene'. I used to do target practice on him with crystal vases and my shoes which he always enjoyed. That is how he got that stupid 'grin'.
Can you please tell Asif (Zardari) not to get blackmailed by this 'ambitious idiot' Rehman Malik. He wanted to be President of Pakistan and then he asked to make him Governor of Punjab.
I know Asif continued with Musharaf's Indianised Suliman Taseer and Eshart Abad Khan of MQM. Well Asif invited every one back in his party whom I kicked out of Bhutto's party. This shows how much he loves me?
Please can you give my sincere regards to your wife (bhabi) and children? I will be in touch and hope to hear from you soon.
Best wishes and take care

Sincerely
Benazir Bhutto (Pinki)
Former Prime Minister of Pakistan

Pakistan has no future sans Iran gas
Govt delaying gas import to please US
India cannot ignore nearest gas reserves
PTI asked to keep energy top priority

Islamabad: [Dec 27]
The Pakistan Economy Watch (PEW) on Tuesday said government has been purposely delaying import of Iranian gas to please America which is damaging Pakistan's economy.

Pleasing US on the cost of country is unfortunate; it suggests that government is dominated by incompetent and apathetic officials, it said.

Pakistan cannot secure its future without Iranian gas, said Dr. Murtaza Mughal, President of the PEW.

Controversial measures like banning use of CNG kits in new and old cars and plans to cut supply to CNG filling stations for months in a country with world's highest consumption make no sense, he added.

He said that protests across the country will force the government to take back the policy decisions which can only increase transportation costs for masses.

Dr. Murtaza Mughal said that Iran has brought pipeline to border and now Islamabad should immediately start building remaining portion of the pipeline.

Decades have already been wasted in discussions and modifications, further wastage of time will jack up costs and leave the industry uncompetitive in the international market, he warned.

Iran produces 5.5 trillion cubic feet of gas per year; it will sell 740 million cubic feet of gas per year which will address around 30 per cent of our gas deficit, he said.

The 42 inch diameter pipeline has the capacity to deliver one Bcf per day, he informed.

Dr. Murtaza Mughal said that rulers seems unconcerned about over 2 per cent yearly fall in the GDP, over 25000 crumbling industrial enterprises, and untold miseries to the masses.

He observed that the performance of local exploration sector remained dismal despite knowing that our gas fields will be exhausted by 2025.

Interests of the foreign companies that continue to work in the restive regions prove that the business is still profitable for foreigner investors, he said.

American will continue to oppose gas pipeline and do nothing to resolve chronic shortages except offering economically unviable alternatives, Dr. Mughal noted.

Despite sanctions, Iran is India's second major source of crude; it could be Pakistan's major source of gas, he opined.

He asked India to take bold decision of joining the project after getting MFN status as it cannot ignore its nearest gas reserves for long.

Dr. Murtaza Mughal asked Imran Khan to keep energy security top priority.

"New Growth Strategy, Deputy Chairman Planning Commission Misquoted"
Islamabad, Monday, 26 December 2011: This is with reference to the news item published in "The News" today regarding the lecture of Dr. Nadeem Ul Haque Deputy Chairman Planning Commission said to be delivered at National Defence University on Growth Strategy.
The news item totally misquoted the contents of the presentation of Dr. Haque, it has nothing to do with the "Nuclear Aspect", the presentation was focused on "The New Growth Strategy" which was approved by "National Economic Council". The same lecture was delivered to the participants of National Security Workshop at the NDU last week.
The message of Dr. Haque in conversatiom with the reporter was that we should focus on growth and development keeping it independent of defense and strategic issues.
Planning Commission of Pakistan has organized a series of workshops on New Growth Strategy which is part of the stakeholders dialogue organized already at 20 universities in 8 cities across the country and the workshop in the National Defence Unviersity was part of this series.
This Workshop was part of a consultation process involving all stakeholders for creating economic literacy and local ownership of the economic reforms under the Framework for Economic Growth of Pakistan formulated by the Planning Commission.
The Framework for Economic Growth of Pakistan formulated by the Planning Commission provides for a strategy that seeks accelerated and sustained growth and development. It comes at a time when the global recession, war on terror and other factors arising out of rampant corruption and governance issues have severely constrained the economic growth in Pakistan. An unintended consequence of our policies has been the stifling of internal markets, cities and communities, which play a critical role in fostering productivity, innovation and entrepreneurship and ultimately promote growth, prosperity and development. Productivity is declining and there is no comprehensive and integrated mechanism available for increasing the competitiveness and good governance. Under these environments Pakistan has been facing new challenges in this 21st century. All stakeholders have to deal with the issues of cultural change and with the more informed masses address the uncertainty present in social, economic and political issues. Media is now more vibrant and liberal for facilitating this process
The focus of workshop was to ascertain stakeholders' views, create societal awareness and local ownership of economic reform to facilitate implementation of new growth framework in the context of following themes of the growth strategy:
  1. Role of Government /result based management in public sector/Civil service reform
  2. Energy
  3. Market Reforms & Entrepreneurship
  4. Urban Management & Connectivity
  5. Youth & Community Engagement
The workshop at National Defence University has been deferred and the new date will be announced as soon as possible
The transcript of the presentation/lecture of the Deputy Chairman Planning Commission and Agenda of the workshop is enclosed herewith for the record and reference.
