ILO Country Director Mr. Donglin Li Conferred with Pakistan's Highest Civilian Award

(Islamabad, Pakistan) Pakistan President H.E. Mr. Asif Ali Zardari on the occasion of National Day conferred the SITARA-I-QUAID-I-AZAM Civil Award on Mr. Donglin Li, former Country Director of International Labour Organization's (ILO) Country Office for Pakistan, for his excellent services to the people of Pakistan. Mr. Li was the Country Director in Pakistan for six and half years until the end of December 2010 and is presently the Country Director of the ILO Country Office for Sri Lanka and the Maldives. The Investiture Ceremony for the Awards took place on 23 March 2011 at the Pakistan High Commission in Colombo, hosted by H.E. Ms. Seema Illahi Baloch, the High Commissioner of Pakistan.

 

The citation for the Award read at the Investiture Ceremony stated that during Mr. Li's six and a half year tenure in Pakistan, the longest serving head of a UN agency at that time, he had worked tirelessly to promote the ILO image and its Decent Work Agenda at various national and international forums. During multiple crises in Pakistan, Mr. Li's initiatives in restoring livelihoods, through creating immediate employment opportunities for the earthquake and flood-affected population were publicly acknowledged by the Government of Pakistan. His pragmatic and diplomatic approach has been highly appreciated by ILO constituents and other stakeholders.

 

Accepting his Award, Mr. Li said that his heart was filled with joy to receive such a prestigious Award on Pakistan's National Day. He said that the conferring of this highest civilian Award not only recognizes his work in Pakistan but it also recognizes the ILO's efforts together with its constituents to promote the Decent Work Agenda to all women and men in Pakistan. He further mentioned that it became possible only due to his dedicated and strong team in Pakistan and the support received from ILO constituents; therefore, credit goes to every staff member of the ILO Country Office and to all ILO constituents in Pakistan. Mr. Li expressed his deep gratitude to the Government and the people of Pakistan for this high honor.

Islamabad: Indian High Commissioner to Pakistan Mr. Sharat Sabharwal on Monday said Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani's acceptance of invitation extended by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh to watch the cricket World Cup semi-final match in Mohali is a great goodwill gesture.

 

He said that this would be an interesting match and an enjoyable game. The major diplomatic initiative will help bring two bordering countries together, he said.

 

Mr. Sabharwal said this while speaking to business community at Federation of Pakistan Chamber of Commerce and Industry (FPCCI), Capital Office, Islamabad.

 

The High Commissioner said that Pakistan has a great potential for development and we should seek enhanced cooperation in various fields.

 

He said that improved relations will trigger pace of development in the two countries which will benefit everyone.

 

Traiq Sayeed, Vice President Cacci and former President FPCCI and Saarc CCCI stressed the need to bring people and business communities of the both countries together for mutual benefit. He demanded multiple visas for frequent travellers and a special category of visas for augmented technical cooperation.

 

Sayeed said that a youth conference in India is on the cards in the mid of April which will prove a milestone in bilateral relations.

 

Earlier in his welcome address, President FPCCI Senator Haji Ghulam Ali highlighted some issues hindering bilateral trade with visa issue figuring prominently and got assurance that all the matters would be revisited.

 

President FPCCI Ghulam Ali also stressed the need to increase the number of delegations between Pakistan and India adding that we need enhanced trade to arrest widespread poverty.He also called upon removing trade barriers among the Saarc grouping.

 

Among others, VPs FPCCI Akbar Khan and Fazle-Elahi, Chairman FPCCI Capital Office Hameed Akhtar Chadda, Chairman Coordination FPCCI, Capital Office Raza Khan, President ICCI Mahfooz Elahi, former VP, FPCCI Humayun Sayeed, Chairman FPCCI Standing Committee Media and PR Malik Sohail, Commercial Consular Indian Embassy Mr. R.K. Sharma and other business leaders were also present on the occasion.

 

Some exporters and exporters raised quality and technical backup issues on which Indian High Commissioner to Pakistan Mr. Sharat Sabharwal assured full cooperation.
