Hormones and leadership

by

Dr Ghayur Ayub

Three hormones - Dopamine, Prolactin and Oxytocine - play an important role in one's emotional make-up and crisis management. Individually, they swing our mood up and down according to their properties in sexual or asexual ways. Thus, separately or in combination, they are responsible for making us feel good and high or vice versa. In this way, we enjoy the pleasure of power control and the associated feeling of grandeur. When such feeling declines because of fall in the relevant hormone, we go into aloofness or even depression which in turn effects our sense of judgement.

Dopamine is known as the reward hormone. It's excess causes anxiety, compulsion, unhealthy risk-taking, sexual fetishes, gambling, aggression, psychosis, schizophrenia, and addiction, while its deficiency causes depression, aloofness, poor libido, loss of remorse about personal behaviour, antisocial behaviour, lack of ambition and poor drive. When it is within a normal limit or in stabilised form, we stay motivated, are satisfied with feelings of well-being, seek appropriate pleasure from accomplishing tasks, maintain bouncing libido, have good feelings towards others, keep healthy bonding, select sound choices, take rewarding risk-takings, believe in realistic expectations, and experience real maternal/parental love. Dopamine is the precursor of Adrenaline, Noradrenaline and has interrelationships with Cortisol. The three hormones are known to rise in fright, fight and fear. Dopamine also inhibits the release of Prolactin from the anterior lobe of the pituitary.

Prolactin is known as the hormone of satiation and resignation. The symptoms associated with its excess is slightly different in man and woman. In woman its excess causes loss of libido, anxiety, hostility, headaches, weight gain and depression. While in man, in addition to the symptoms mentioned above it's excess causes impotence and infertility. So in many ways the effects of Prolactin excess are antagonistic to Dopamine excess.

Oxytocine is known as the cuddle and love hormone and is considered an anti-stress hormone. Its excess causes feelings of calm and connectedness. Though it increases curiosity, facilitates learning and enhances positive feelings, it also lessens cravings and causes addictions. The latter can be taken as positive element by some equating it with addiction to religious beliefs. In the physical aspect, it diminishes the sense of pain and is known to lower blood pressure, protect from heart diseases and help in the healing process. Lastly, it is known to increase sexual receptivity. It is this aspect which created enthusiasm in the West and opened windows of interest in certain Tantric practices of Hinduism and Buddhism.

It is important to know that these hormones, like other hormones, do not act in isolation. Their actions are interlinked through transmitting media formed of proteins. This means that the antagonistic and agonistic hormones work at the same time. The result depends on the hormone which is more potent quantitatively and shows its qualitative effects. In other words, the diverse actions keep us high or low in our moods, positive or negative in our make-up and wise or rash in our decisions.

It is also important to understand that the duration of a hormonal peak is short because of pharmacological nature of a hormone. Soon, another hormone, usually the antagonistic, takes over and an opposite effect sets in translating into mood swing from positive to negative or vice versa. For example an excessive shower of Dopamine will give us a kick but soon it is countered by the rising Prolactin level bringing our mood down pushing us into despair. These swings make us moody and unpredictable.

So, is there a way out of such mood swings to bring stability in personalities on a permanent basis? Yes, there is. A hormone that antagonizes the emotional roller-coaster effects of excess Dopamine is Oxytocine which also counteracts fear and stress associated with high cortisol level. Being a pair-bonding and mood soother, it brings solace in personality and contentment in behaviour. In animal experiments, it is shown that after mating, the Oxytocine minimises the roller-coaster effect of Dopamine and the rise of Prolactin ensuring that both the parents cooperate for the survival of their offspring. In humans, this practice is not possible. What is possible is to keep the Oxytocine at optimum level which not only have sobriety effect but also stabilises Dopamine levels adding to the aforementioned effect of the latter. The combination also facilitates relaxation.

There are two ways of keeping optimal levels of the desired hormones; first, by taking appropriate medication; second by using unorthodox methods. The first needs repetitive administration which has its side effects and probably developing resistance. The second is non-medicinal and is related to paranormal phenomena as in parapsychology or spirituality. The latter methods are based on various meditative non-religious or religious procedures which are gaining support in the west in recent years. The aim is to control the release of these hormones and thus bring solace and stability in our personalities. Interestingly, such practitioners are termed 'fathead' by the philosophers, physicists and mathematicians because they do not fall into their 'cause and effect theories', or the 'experimentation, addition, subtraction and result equations'.

As part of Neuroscience research in recent advances in the neurochemistry of the limbic system of the brain, it is found that leaders with manic make-up somehow do well when put under stress. The research is nowhere near being able to scan a leader's brain but, "it studied some of the building blocks of what leaders do - making decisions under pressure when solving complex problems, negotiating a transactions, or trying to persuade others." The research, after studying some 60,352 books in the 'leadership' category came up with "huge gaps in its understanding not knowing if it's more about traits, attributes and competencies, or about what followers need. In that way, leadership development still involves a lot of guesswork." As a result, it came up with some big surprises as some of the leaders do some pretty unintelligent things.

Nassir Ghaemi, a professor of psychiatry at Tufts University School of Medicine in Boston, argues that psychiatric disorders were the making of some of the great world leaders. He argues that the best leaders, during troubled times, are those with mood disorders, since their illness enhances the very qualities that crisis management demands. In times of crisis, he concludes, "we are better off being led by mentally ill leaders than by mentally normal ones". Some experts claim that leaders who are successful in peacetime are often failures in war, and vice versa, For example, JFK's success in crisis is put down to his use of steroids and amphetamines, which may have made him manic. The drugs are closely linked to the hormones mentioned above. While Richard Nixon–diagnosed as mentally healthy was ill equipped to deal with Watergate crisis. Similarly, the leaders like Abraham Lincoln, Winston Churchill, Mahatama Gandhi and even George W. Bush were bracketed as manics. The history of all such leaders tell us that either these leaders were hooked on drugs or practised meditation. The ongoing hormonal research in neuroscience suggests that important hormones played a pivotal role in creating the world leaders.

Finally, it will not be out of place to bring Asif Ali Zardari into the discussion. After all, authentic medical certificates confirmed that he has some serious mental health problems. And yet when we see him tackling the most difficult political problems in crisis he comes out unscathed and palmy. Should we count him among those world leaders with mental health problems? His ever-smiling face indicates he is keeping Oxytocine level optimum and Dopamine level stabilised. We are told that Mahatma Gandhi used eastern techniques and Churchill applied self-hypnosis to regulate these hormones and kept themselves calm in times of crisis. What about Asif Ali Zardari? Does he maintain calmness by taking medicine, or is he practising meditation? Also, there is one point which does not fit in the equation; unlike Gandhi and Churchill he is diagnosed as suffering from dementia.

The end

Open letter to the Pakistan government and its UK representative

wajid_s_hasan640

Assalamu alaikum,

We write to you in the blessed month of Ramadhan: the month in which Allah (swt) showers His blessings on the Ummah, opens the gates of Jannah, closes the gates of Jahannum, and when Muslims across the world pray for Allah (swt) to bless this Ummah with victory.

Many a time, the Pakistan diaspora in the UK has demanded answers – from you and your representatives in the UK – for the treachery you have committed against the people of Pakistan. It seems your government has no answers to these demands and prefers to hide behind slander and rhetoric.

Pakistan faces a grave crisis on every front and requires a deep and far reaching political vision to lead it out of this problematic time. Yet the sum response of the regime you represent is the sale of some mangos to America, to depend upon US military aid with conditions that expect the Pakistan army to murder its own citizens and compromise its sovereignty on vital issues.

Your democracy has shown itself to be no different to the military dictatorship that preceded it. It justifies its stance with its paymasters so that it may line its pockets with aid at the expense of the people. The same paymasters who supported Hosni Mubarak, the former Fir'awn of Egypt, who now faces charges of corruption and murder caged in a courtroom.

Has the Pakistani regime learned nothing from the millions who turned out in Egypt, a country ruled for decades by a brutal secular dictator and loyal slave of America? People there finally made their voices heard yet now, the Pakistan regime behaves more like Fir'awn and abducts members of Hizb ut Tahrir.

When CIA backed bombs strike Pakistan's cities and political violence and criminality engulf Karachi, does the Zardari-Gilani regime think that arresting non-violent political activists, who have no weapons except ideas and words of truth, is the best use of the security forces?

Just as in Egypt, where a million people in Tahrir Square called for Islamic government on the eve of this blessed month of Ramadhan, the people of Pakistan – from the military, judiciary, economists, students, the masses and increasingly even politicians – are beginning to understand that it is only the Islamic Khilafah system that can solve the problems of Pakistan, not the clueless secular regimes that have plagued it and resulted in an infestation of corrupt scoundrels in the highest positions of power.

The Khilafah will move to end the killings in Karachi. It would not tolerate the existence of criminal gangsters under the guise of politicians who fan the flames of sectarianism, abusing and killing the people for the sake of power and wealth. It would not seek to make political deals with these people, as your regime does, just to secure your own government.

The Khilafah will remove the American military presence from Pakistan; it will not allow a single CIA agent, Blackwater-Xe mercenary or a solitary drone to remain on any part of its territory. In 1947, the Muslims of the sub-continent did not give their lives and wealth to throw off British rule and secure themselves from oppression in India only to accept the oppression of America. They sacrificed so that they and their children could live in safety and tranquillity under the shade of Islam – yet your regime now locks up those who work for Islam!

The Khilafah will move to end the artificially induced energy crisis that has been created by the sheer incompetence, greed and inability of secular rulers like you in managing Pakistan's vast resources.

The Khilafah would not allow foreign companies to come and lay claim to resources that belong to the people, only to sell it back to them at a huge mark up.

The Khilafah will solve the rampant inflation and crushing poverty faced by tens of millions of Pakistanis on a daily basis. It is intolerable that people live in squalor and poverty due to the failed policies of corrupt and selfish rulers – and not because Allah (swt) did not bless the land with ample resources.

The Khilafah will replace the fiat currency model – failing in the United States and Europe in front of our very eyes – with the gold standard, bringing much needed currency stability for the individual and businesses alike.

The Khilafah will move to invest heavily in areas of agriculture and industry to create jobs and wealth, as opposed to your failed solution of simply turning on the print machine at the State bank.

Despite your vulgar and oppressive tactics, Hizb ut-Tahrir will continue to expose your treachery and your slavish relationship with the US. We do not hide behind rhetoric or propaganda, for we have a solution to give to the people of Pakistan which neither you, your cronies or your corrupt system can deliver.

Hizb ut-Tahrir's vision for Pakistan far exceeds your shallow, self centred policies which are driven by America. We present a vision for Pakistan which is enlightened, protects the life, property and honour of the people and above all is motivated by the Aqeeda of Islam.

This is the month when people are raising their hands making dua to Allah (swt). His beloved Messenger (saw) said that the dua of the oppressed has no screen between him and Allah (swt). Millions of people are being oppressed by Pakistan's regime while it fails to solve their problems yet itself lives in luxury.

The establishment of Khilafah is an inevitable matter in the hands of Allah (swt). It will surely be established and for a surety end your tyrannical rule – just as the rule of the tyrants in the Middle East is ending.

Wassalamu alaikum

It is such a nice story for us to reach and follow, especially in the month of Ramadan, sent to be by a very special friend of mine!

Assalam-o-alaikum

This story about "Istighfaar" is from the life of Imam Ahmed Bin Hanbal, who is considered as a renowned scholar of Islam and a famous theologian. Imam Ahmed is also considered to be the founder of the Hanbali school of fiqh (Islamic jurisprudence) and is one of the most celebrated  theologians, often referred to as the "Sheikh ul-Islam" or the "Imam of Ahl al-Sunnah."
During his old age, while Imam Ahmed was travelling he stopped by a town. After the prayers, he wanted to stay for the night in the masjid yard because he didn't know anyone in the town. Owing to his humility, he hadn't introduced himself to anyone thinking that if he did, he would be welcomed by many people.

Failing to recognize Ahmed bin Hanbal, the caretaker of the mosque refused to let him stay in the mosque. As Imam Ahmed was quite old, the caretaker had to drag him out of the mosque. On seeing this, a baker from a nearby place felt pity for this man (Imam Ahmed) and offered to be the host to him for the night. During his stay with the baker, Imam Ahmed observed that the baker would constantly recite Istighfar (seek forgiveness from Allah). Imam Ahmed asked the baker if the constant practice of saying Istighfar had any effect on him. The baker responded by telling Imam Ahmed that Allah had accepted all of his duas (supplications), except one. When he asked him what dua was it that hadn't been accepted, the baker replied that he had been asking Allah to provide him the privilege to meet the famous scholar Imam Ahmed bin Hanbal.
On this, Imam Ahmed bin Hanbal said that Allah had not only listened to his dua but had dragged him onto his (the baker's) doorsteps.1

This story is a reminder of the power of saying Istighfaar (seeking forgiveness) frequently. Let's remember that the Prophet (peace be upon him) used to say Istighfaar frequently during the day. Tafseer Al-Qurtubi states:

A man complained to Al-Hasan about a drought, and he said to him: "Pray to Allah for forgiveness."

Another man complained to him of poverty and he said to him: "Pray to Allah to forgive you."
Another man said to him: "Pray to Allah to bless me with a child." He said: "Pray to Allah for forgiveness."

Another complained to him that his garden was dry. He said to him: "Pray to Allah for forgiveness."

He was asked about it and he said:
"This is not my personal opinion, for Allah says in Surah Nooh (interpretation of the meaning): 'Ask forgiveness from your Lord, verily, He is Oft Forgiving; He will send rain to you in abundance. And give you increase in wealth and children, and bestow on you gardens and bestow on you rivers." Tafseer Al-Qurtubi (18/301-302)

One of the narrators of a Hadith was asked about the manner in which forgiveness is to be sought, to which he answered: "The Messenger of Allah (sallallaahu 'alayhi wa sallam) used to say: 'Astaghfirullah! Astaghfirullah! (I beseech Allah for forgiveness, I beseech Allah for forgiveness)'." [Sahih Muslim].

The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: "Whoever frequently asks for forgiveness, Allah (swt) will appoint for him relief from every worry, a way out from every difficulty and provision coming from unimagined sources." (Abu Dawud, Ibn Majah and Ahmad)
And Allah (Almighty) said:
"And whatever of misfortune befalls you, it is because of what your hands have earned.
And He pardons much." (Surah 42v30)

"The most superior among you (Muslims) are those who learn the Qur'an and teach it."

NEWS RELEASE

INTERNATIONAL MEDIA ETHICS DAY TO BE CELEBRATED IN PAKISTAN

Mishal Pakistan in collaboration with the Center for International Media Ethics to mobilize the journalism community on September 23rd, 2011

Islamabad, August 15, 2011: The Center for International Media Ethics - CIME, a non-profit organization with staff members operating across several continents teams up with Mishal Pakistan, a leading strategic communication social enterprise, specializing in media and communication for policy design in a bid to bring together a network of journalists and students in Pakistan to provide training, discussion and expertise in the ethics of their profession.

"The Pakistani media industry, since its deregulation in the year 2002, has expanded exponentially. While the media has come a long way, from a singular national media outlet, to a vibrant and proactive community of news channels and print media, it is still far behind in the implementation of a media ethics protocol. Special interests and above all, sensationalism continue to compromise objectivity, especially in the electronic media. Such trends can be countered, most effectively, with better training of journalists and a wider campaign to promote ethics in journalism. – said Melisande Middleton, founder of the Center for International Media Ethics

The aim of Media Ethics Day is to mobilize the journalism community and provide journalists around the world with an opportunity to discuss media ethics issues, examine case studies, and participate in role-plays and debates related to the various ethical dilemmas they might expect to face on the job.

The Center for International Media Ethics - CIME has appointed Mishal's Director Content, Puruesh Chaudhary as its Ambassador to Pakistan on Media Ethics. "CIME and Mishal will work on indigenous platforms that will serve the journalistic community, policy-makers and students to participate and share opinions that will strengthen the understanding of ethical dilemmas facing the media industry", said Puruesh Chaudhary, CIME Ambassador to Pakistan.

Through this partnership, both CIME and Mishal Pakistan intend to promote respect for truth, accuracy and privacy by engaging relevant stakeholders to create dialogue on ethical practices through training programmes on quality reporting that results in educating the public. The two organizations would drive the emphasis that journalists together have the power to formulate a tacit code of ethics as a status quo of their profession, which is evolved and observed, mutually by the community, the regulatory authority and relevant stakeholders.

A recent web-based survey launched by CIME, reflects on how media professionals themselves see their position at work, ethical standards of media in their country and the need for improvement of ethical standards among journalists and media professionals. A significant number of respondents from Pakistan and Bangladesh indicated that it is difficult to follow ethical rules due to lack of awareness regarding the code of ethics established by respective employers.

CIME encourages journalists to take on a proactive role in defining ethical practices through the choices and decisions made at work on a daily basis. This partnership between CIME and Mishal will urge journalists to work together to make their own judgments and identify their own strategies.

CIME has already hosted its Forum three years in a row, to provide panel discussion sessions for a group of selected journalists on the topic of ethics. This provides a framework for media professionals to share strategies on local ethical dilemmas that come up in their work. CIME hosts the annual CIME Forum in developing and emerging economies where journalists cannot normally afford ethics training, with the goal of improving the overall journalism ethics standards in each given country.

Mishal, launched in 2003, has been engaged with some of the most dynamic organizations in the region to develop their communication strategy and solutions for better understanding and creating synergies between different members of the information ecosystem. Mishal has been at the forefront of creating a knowledge-based ecosystem and is actively pursuing to improve the state of media and journalism in Pakistan.

The team behind Mishal has been developing, creating and managing media entities and content for the last 20 years at various platforms. Taking this initiative to the next level Mishal has been actively pursuing to build the capacity of the media in creating better understanding the issues in global perspective.

Mishal has undertaken the task to build the capacity of the Press Clubs and Associations in Pakistan by creating a knowledge-sharing learning platform for the media and journalists across Pakistan. The initiative will build the capacity through interactive workshops, conferences, collaborative-thinking and media and journalism awards for the professionals in the field of journalism and media.

(Press Release)

Japan nods 65 m USD (approx.) for polio eradication in Pakistan

Islamabad, August 15, 2011: Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) signed a Japanese ODA Loan Agreement with the Economic Affairs Division (EAD) of Pakistan to provide a loan of up to 4,993 million yen (approx. 65 million USD) for polio eradication in Pakistan. The objective of "the Polio Eradication Project" is to optimize immunization of polio vaccine to children under 5 years, by procuring vaccines and providing services necessary for polio immunization activities, thereby contributing to the eradication of polio in Pakistan.

This ODA Loan is extended on soft terms with an interest rate of 0.01 percent and repayment period of 40 years including grace period of 10 years. The funds for the project will be released, to cover the expense of polio campaigns in September 2011 and onwards after obtaining the legal opinion of Pakistan's Federal Ministry of Law, Justice and Parliamentary Affairs.

Pakistan has lagged behind other countries in South Asia in terms of maternal and infant mortality, and is one of the polio endemic countries in the world (the others are Afghanistan, India, and Nigeria). Despite the fact that the global effort toward eradication is in the final stage, there is an increasing trend of polio incidence in Pakistan mainly due to the large-scale population movement in the wake of floods of 2010. Under such circumstances, the GOP has demonstrated a commitment to early eradication of polio through launching of the National Emergency Action Plan for Polio Eradication by President Asif Ali Zardari in January this year.

In order to underpin the efforts of the GOP towards eradication of polio, JICA in line with policy of the Government of Japan (GOJ) will support Polio Campaign through the procurement of Oral Polio Vaccine (OPV) and service provision of the campaign. The project addresses an issue critical to polio eradication in Pakistan, such as reinforcing activities in the prevailing region including the Pakistan-Afghanistan border areas and strengthening modus operandi through improving allowance package of immunization workers. The United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF) and the World Health Organization (WHO) will engage in vaccine procurement and service delivery of the polio campaign respectively in this project.

GOJ has continuously committed itself to polio eradication in Pakistan. As part of the government's response to the polio eradication in Pakistan, GoJ has provided Grant Aid to procure OPV mainly used for the Pakistan-Afghanistan border areas in partnership with UNICEF since 1996. Besides this, JICA has conducted its technical cooperation to enhance the capacity to Expanded Program on Immunization (EPI) through "EPI - Polio Control Project" with an objective of expanding routine immunization mainly in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Province for five years from September 2006. The Polio Eradication Project intends to step up the cooperation until now and boost the GOP's effort toward polio eradication.

Notes:  In a brief ceremony, the Exchange of Notes were signed and exchanged between H.E Hiroshi OE, Ambassador of Japan to Pakistan and Mr. Abdul Wajid Rana, Secretary EAD of Pakistan.

The Loan Agreement was signed and exchanged between Mr. Masataka Nakahara, Director General, South Asia Department of JICA and Mr. Hassan Nawaz Tarar, Additional Secretary, EAD Pakistan.
