Roundtable on "Role of Media in Conflict Situations" by Individualland.
Islamabad: Pakistan has been classified as one of the most dangerous
countries of the world. The volatile situation in the country has affected
the freedom of journalists and the media, as the threat of terrorism has
now also engulfed them in the conflict. According to the International
Federation of Journalists (IFJ) in 2010, fifteen journalists have died in
Pakistan, due to violence related incidents. The correspondents and
journalists have been subjected to kidnappings, torture and harassment.
The presence of journalists in conflict zones allows them to assess the
situation and present a clear and unbiased view to the public.
Individualland Pakistan (IL-Pakistan) is an Islamabad based non-profit
development organization with a national footprint and is actively engaged
with the Pakistani media. This engagement involves utilising the media, as
an ally for change. IL-Pakistan in its effort to encourage debate,
arranged a roundtable titled "Role of Media in Conflict Situations" at
Islamabad Hotel, on 14th April, 2011. Leading media representatives
participated in the roundtable and presented their opinions and view
points, based on their experience in the given field. The participants of
this event included Mr. Ikram Hoti, Mr. Syed Irfan Ashraf, Mr. Absar Alam,
Mr. Shamim Shahid, Mr. Malik Safdar Dawar, Mr. Shahzada Zulfiqar, Mr. Asim
Awan, Mr. Ali Saleem, Mr. Adnan Rehmat and Mr. Mazhar Arif. The
participants at the roundtable shared their input on developing a code of
conduct for journalists working in conflict zones, along with
standardizing the safety procedures that can help to survive in the
conflict situations
