Press-Release: Foreign Experts laud the Role of PJC Research Initiatives.
The Pakistan Journal of Criminology latest issue has been published by the Pakistan Society of Criminology. The recent issue which is the eighth in its series since April 2009, comprises of research-based articles from senior police officers, both serving and retired. The present quarterly is edited by Prof. Rod Broadhurst, a well-known criminologist of the Australian National University. Prof. Boradhurst has commented on the research essays of Pakistani police officers and has lauded the role of the PJC in making an indigenous body of criminological literature and policing sciences. Prof. Rod Broadhurst has critically evaluated the two research articles by Syed Akhtar Ali Shah, (Addl. IGP, KPK) who has written on the "Causes of Crimes in KPK" and the "Role of Madrassahs (Islamic schools) in the Politics of Pakistan". Mr. Shah has given a detailed account of his personal reflections and experiences as a police officer in KPK and has opened a new debate for looking into the causes of crimes in KPK from the perspective of a practitioner, rather than a theoretician.
Former IGP, Mr. Aftab Nabi has contributed his article on "Cattle Theft and Criminal Justice System in the Colonial era". The article is described by the foreign expert as the most interesting which has many guidelines for the present day police to deal with other forms of theft, robberies and dacoities. The recent issue of PJC includes the reprinting of the unavailable 25 years old booklet "Criminal Justice and the Community" by former IGP, M. Y. Orakzai (Late), which contains enormously important and historical revelations that how some new departments like Highway Police, Narcotics Control Board and FIA were initiated and established by him during 70s and 80s, and why these new departments are now lagging behind their original ideas, programmes and purpose. Another great scholar from Canada, Prof. John Winterdyk, Director, Centre for Criminology and Justice Research, Mount Royal University, Canada, has written a detailed evaluation of all the previous issues of Pakistan Journal of Criminology and has opined that, "we all have lessons to learn from one another and through open dialogue and exchange we can perhaps begin to move towards building and sustaining societies that are safe." The recent issue of PJC has raised many questions about police and policing styles and the role of criminal justice systems to fight crime and radicalism.
