Beginning in August, the monsoon season hit Pakistan and has come to devastate the province of Sindh. With over 5 million people affected, including 2 million homeless and hundreds dead, the people of Sindh remain in a precarious situation. With little aid and relief, the Sindhi people are suffering from diseases, loss of livelihood, and nowhere to go.

Join us to learn more about the Sindh, who the people are, and most importantly, how the Sindh region plays a crucial part in the United States' relationship with Pakistan and its security interests.

Speakers:
Dr. Haider K. Nizamani—Teaches Political Science at the University of British Columbia (UBC) in Vancouver, Canada.  From 2000-2001, he was a postdoctoral fellow at the Center for Nonproliferation Studies at the Monterey Institute of International Studies.  From 2001 to 2003, he was a Global Security and Cooperation Fellow of the Social Science Research Council at UBC's Institute of International Relations, as well as a Visiting Fellow at the Sustainable Development Policy Institute in Islamabad.

Dr. Louis Flam—Professor of archaeology, paleoecology, geoarchaeology and South Asian Studies at the City University of New York (CUNY).  Some of his writings include:  "The Other Side of the Mountains: Explorations in the Kirthar Mountains Region of Western Sindh, Pakistan" from Arabia and Her Neighbors: Essays on Prehistoric and Historic Developments Presented in Honor of Beatrice de Cardi, "Explorations in the Sindh and the Sindh Archaeological Project" from Explorations in Art and Archaeology of South Asia, and "Fluvial Geomorphology of the Lower Indus Basin (Sindh, Pakistan) and the Indus Civilization" from Himalaya to the Sea: Geology, Geomorphology and the Quaternary.

Dr. Gul Agha—Professor of Computer Science at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.  Dr. Agha grew up in, and has traveled extensively throughout Sindh and all of South Asia.  He has written numerous short essays about Sindh and has lectured at dozens of gatherings about Sindhi history and culture. Additionally, he has presented briefings on human rights in Sindh at the 2004 and 2005 sessions of the United Nations Commission on Human Rights in Geneva.

Dr. Geeta Chainani--After having been raised in America, Dr. Geeta Chainani's identity as a Sindhi brought her back to Pakistan in search of her family history. An unexpected twist of fate brought her face to face with what is now being termed as the "greatest natural disaster of our time" – the massive flooding that began on July 29, 2010. After witnessing the great burden of disease whose victims mainly consisted of women and children, Dr. Chainani decided to dedicate the rest of her trip to providing emergency medical care in two tent cities. Confronted with the great humanitarian crisis following the floods and the response to her community's increasing interest in her work in Pakistan, Dr. Chainani realized she was the only one to bridge this divide. Life Bridge was founded as that bridge. Since Sept 2, 2010, Dr. Chainani continues to volunteer her services in the villages of interior Sindh. Together, Team Life Bridge US and Team Life Bridge Pakistan work to bridge the gaps in issues related to health, water, Sanitation and Hygiene, shelter, food, and income generating activities focused on women. Dr. Chainani was granted a Doctor of Medicine degree by Windsor University School of Medicine, St. Kitts.
