The Senate's Standing Committee on Communications has expressed its satisfaction on the inquiry report presented by the NH&MP of the unfortunate school bus accident near Kalar Kahar on Motorway and has made recommendations to take concrete measures as to the future strategy whereas the Federal Minister for Communications Dr. Arbab Alamgir Khan has reiterated to take solid measures to make journey on the Motorway safer so that such incidents do not happen in the future. The meeting of the Senate's Standing Committee was held in the office of GM NHA Balkasar, the Chairman of the Committee Mir Wali Muhammad Badeni chaired the meeting. The meeting was also attended by the Federal Minister for Communications Dr. Arbab Alamgir Khan and members of the Committee Senator Ismail Buledi, Senator Muhammad Zahid Khan, Senator Lt. General (R ) Javed Ashraf Qazi, Senator Naeem Hussain Chattha and Senator Abdul Rahim Khan Mandokhel. On this occasion, Chairman NHA Syed Muhammad Ali Gardezi, Joint Secretary Communications Mathar Niaz Rana, IG Motorway Police Zafrullah Khan, Member Operations NHA Chaudhry Mujeeb Qadir and other high officials were also present. The Chairman of the Inquiry Committee of the said incident DIG Motorways/Headquarters Dr. Muhammad Shafiq while presenting a detailed report through multimedia said that the Motorway personnel responsible for the said accident have already been suspended and departmental proceedings against them are underway whereas action has also been recommended against the Motor Vehicle Examiner, Faisalabad (MVE), the owners of the bus and the school administration and others responsible for the accident. The recommendations were approved by the Standing Committee and it also urged the Punjab Government to immediately carry out the recommendations of the inquiry committee. The Senate's Standing Committee also expressed its displeasure over the absence of the DCO Faisalabad from the meeting and ordered the Chief Secretary Punjab, Minister Transport Punjab and DCO to appear before the Standing Committee in its next meeting. The Standing Committee while recommending concrete safety measures demanded to ensure availability of Heavy Cranes and setting up of more Trauma Centers for first aid at Kallarkahar. It was also recommended the construction of 23 kilometers patch of the Motorway in the Salt Range as bypass from Lilla to Kallalkahar. The Standing Committee appreciated and also made recommendations to streamline licensing of the drivers with the NADRA's data base and cancellation of their licenses in case of any violation of traffic rules. The Committee also recommended setting up of driving schools at district level in the provincial level and life insurance of passengers by the transport companies. The motorway Police will not allow entry on motorway to those buses which have no insurance of passengers. The Standing Committee also appreciated the efforts of the Federal Minister who himself reached the spot of accident and to supervised the rescue efforts. The Committee also urged to follow motor fitness standards and instructed all provinces to set up international standard workshops of certain companies e.g. Toyota/Honda etc. responsible for approving vehicles fitness certified by a govt. qualified mechanical engineer. Prayers were also offered in the committee's meeting for those who lost their lives in the Kallar Kahar accident. Later on, the Federal Minister Dr. Arbab Alamgir Khan , while talking to the media, said that he himself reached at the spot with the IG Motorway as soon as the accident occurred and himself monitored the rescue and relief efforts. The Federal Minister said that it is our effort to provide maximum facilities and safety to the travelers on the Motorways to avoid such accidents. He said that in future traffic laws will be strictly enforced on the Motorways and he issued necessary directions to the motorway police.
