Rifah Slates Nawaz Sharif's anti-Army Tirade
The difference in foreign policy of Asif Zardari (AZ) and Nawaz Sharif (NS) is that AZ is pro India as well as America while NS is pro-India and anti-America
Mian Nawaz Sharif, President of Pakistan Muslim League (N) has surprised everyone by saying that India is not the enemy of Pakistan. Lately, the PML(N) President has shocked his constituency by taking a strident anti-Army line. The object of his ire is no longer the Generals alone; he has called for action against the judges who furnished legitimacy to military take over. The Generals and the Judges were the targets of AZ from the outset. When he says that the PPP got iqtidar but never ikhtiar he means that Judges and Generals stood in the way. AZ wanted a pliant judiciary and did not want to restore the judges dismissed by General Musharraf. With the Army and the ISI he was less sure. General Kiani had been Assistant Military Secretary of Prime Minister Benazir Bhutto but that was a long time ago. He had also been a part of the Musharraf team to negotiate the NRO. That was not enough for AZ either. It was not until General Kiani was made the sole interlocutor with the American military that suspicion evaporated. NS is clearly very upset because the ISI had been on his side since he became the trusted protégé of General Zia ul Haq. The ISI even assembled the IJI alliance that delivered NS two third majority in the National Assembly and control of government in all provinces. He has since managed to lose the confidence of all his erstwhile allies and supporters. He is upset. His panic is palpable. His views and true character are on display.
The Army and the ISI have always been the target of India but after the killing of Osama bin Laden in Abbotabad on 2 May, the demonization of the ISI reached feverish pitch in India while USA and Europe were not far behind in accusing Pakistan of giving 'protection to terrorists'. The parliament of Pakistan responded to the challenge and passed a resolution by total consensus that outlines Pakistan's response to "Drone Attacks and Unilateral Unlawful Raids". While PML(N) led the crystallisation of the consensus in the parliament, its focus has been to get an inquiry commission that would hold the Army and the ISI responsible for 'failures'. NS does not appear to realise that he has become an ally of India and enemy of Pakistan in seeking that result. To make sure that the message is not attributed to his foolishness he has asserted that India is not the enemy of Pakistan. That was not enough; he had to say who the enemies of Pakistan were. In his most recent view, the Army and the ISI are the enemies. More precisely, the Judges and Generals are the enemies – the BJP and Sindhi-Baluchi Nationalists are his friends.
Since the constituency of PML(N), Imran Khan's TI, and of Rifah Party is the same, the Secretary General of Rifah Party, Brigadier ® Usman Khalid, expressed alarm at the tirade of NS against the Army and high judiciary. "NS is in panic", he said, "but that does not mean he should compromise national interests and ignore national aspirations." He added, "It is the dire need of the time after the parliament has given the armed forces clear and robust direction that ALL political parties should back the services unreservedly avoiding actions and inquiries that provide ammunition to the enemy. The statement of NS does make India a friend; India could become a friend if it stopped building dams on Pakistan's rivers in Kashmir and gave the people of Jammu and Kashmir their right of self-determination as promised by both India and Pakistan as early as in 1949."
