JAPAN CONFIRMS FIRST DONATION TO

 WFP'S FOOD RESPONSE IN PAKISTAN FLOODS

ISLAMABAD – The United Nations World Food Programme (WFP) today welcomed a crucial contribution of US$4 million from the Government of Japan, the first to be confirmed in support of WFP's emergency response providing life-saving food assistance to victims of this year's monsoon flooding in Pakistan's Sindh and Balochistan provinces.

Coming at a time when additional funding is urgently required, the donation will allow WFP to scale up its ongoing response in Sindh, where the devastating effects of the flooding have left an estimated 2.75 million people in need of immediate food assistance. The US$4 million  donation will be used to provide 600,000 people with a one-month family food ration.

"WFP is extremely grateful for this generous and timely donation from Japan. Families affected by the catastrophe have lost everything and are counting on WFP assistance to meet their most basic food needs," said Dominique Frankefort, WFP Acting Country Director in Pakistan. "This first Japanese contribution will allow us to start scaling up our response to reach all those so desperately in need."

Across affected areas of Sindh and Balochistan, WFP plans to provide up to 2.55 million people with life-saving food rations from October. By drawing upon existing food stocks available in-country, an initial 500,000 beneficiaries in Badin, Mirpur Khas, Nawabshah, Sanghar and Tharparkar are being targeted for WFP assistance in September, of which close to 300,000 have been reached thus far. "It is only thanks to the ongoing support of our donors, exemplified by this latest contribution from Japan, that WFP will be able to provide all the assistance required in the wake of the disaster," added Frankefort.

Following the launch of the Pakistan Floods Rapid Response Plan on 18 September 2011, WFP is urgently seeking US$133 million to meet the full extent of immediate food needs identified in recent and ongoing assessments. A further US$1.9 million is required by the WFP-led Logistics Cluster, in order to provide essential transport, storage and coordination services for the community of humanitarian respondents.
