PRESS RELEASE
RJA condemns harrassment ofNaya Mahaz employees
A Daily Naya Mahaz story exposing links between land mafia and NBP president, Qamar Hussain, regarding handing over around 40 acre land in Manghu Pir, has landed its hawker Muhammad Mushataq in deep trouble. He was stopped by four armed youth before the headquarters of the NBP and was stopped of selling the newspaper.
Earlier Mr. Farrukh Nawaz, the Executive Editor of Naya Mahaz received threatening calls asking him not expose the scam of NDFC lands which NBP president is handing over to land mafia without proper procedures. Farrukh received injuries on August 10 in result of his vheicle hit at Missile Chowk, F-10, by unknown assailants.
Radio Journalists Association (RJA) supports the media organisations, noteably National Press Club, Young Journalists Association and Parliamentary Reporters Associatyion, which have strongly condemned the harrassing of the staff of the Daily Naya Mahaz and termed the above mentioned incidents as attack on the media freedom. It is noteworthy that NBP has not issued a single explaination of the allegation of Naya Mahaz staffers who implicate the administration of NBP for their miseries. It is worrisome that despite the nature of scandals has serious implications for the credibility of the the bank its adminstration has not bothered to contradict these stories.
RJA urges on the NBP adminstration to clarify its position vis-a-vis Daily Naya Mahaz and the scams it is publishing. Too the government should take concrete steps to ensure that the Naya Mahaz staff should do their job with peace of mind.
