World owes a solution to lingering Kashmir dispute, seminar told in Kuala Lumpur
Speakers at a seminar in the Malaysian capital have called for concerted efforts to awaken the world's conscience and raise support for the just cause of the people of Kashmir waiting for more than six decades now to realize their goal of self-determination.
The call was made during a seminar held in Kuala Lumpur on Sunday evening under the aegis of Global Peace Mission (GPM), Angkatan Belia Islam Malaysia (ABIM) and High Commission for Pakistan in Malaysia to mark the Kashmir Solidarity Day observed all over the world on 5th February every year to show solidarity and support for the people of Kahsmir.
A large number of civil society representatives, members of Kashmiri and Pakistani communities, academicians and students attended the function addressed by various notable speakers, including ABIM Secretary General Mr. Mohammad Raimi Abdul Rahim, noted academician Prof Dr. Ruhanas Harun, Global Peace Mission Malaysia CEO Mr. Azlan Mohd Shariff and Mr. Rafiq Bin Fazal Din from Malaysian Centre for Policy Research.
The speakers highlighted the spirit of the day and called on the international community to help resolve the issue of Kashmir to secure peace and stability in the region. They said the people of Kashmir had long suffered in search of freedom and in an age when the human freedoms were being watched and secured by the civilized world through diplomatic means and dialogue, the Kashmiris were being deprived of their basic rights and awaiting a just and lasting solution.
Earlier in his opening remarks, the High Commissioner for Pakistan in Malaysia, Mr. Masood Khalid highlighted the significance of the Kashmir Solidarity Day and Pakistan's efforts to secure a solution to the long-standing Kashmir issue. "Our position is based on the support for a just cause and on principles recognized by the international community and enshrined in the UN Charter," he said, adding that Pakistan was committed to extending full moral, diplomatic and political support to the Kashmiri people till the realization of their right to self-determination.
Later, a group of Pakistani and Kashmiri students enrolled in local universities and colleges presented colourful skits, songs, plays and tableaus signifying the theme of Kashmir Solidarity Day and highlighting the rich Kashmiri culture and traditions.
