MORNING NOTES
By Taj Haider
How about a backhand Mian Sahib
1. Memo has misfired. Bad planning indeed. Old tricks in a new situation were bound to fail. Who were the actual planners? What were the loop holes in planning and their execution? Did these planners suffer from over confidence or were in too much of a hurry? Who got cold feet when the goal was to be scored? All these points have to be given a serious thought while making the next plan (if not already made) in the 'struggle against democracy'.
2. Mian Nawaz Sharif Sahib had surely left his flanks open and undefended. Devoid of any original thinking or looking at pitfalls ahead, he and his advisors decided to plunge forward with their eyes closed. Having full faith in the "wisdom" and "capabilities" of the traditional anti-PPP forces he hoped that everything would fall in place. This recklessness is a trade mark of Mian Sahib. We paid a heavy price for his reckless actions in Kargil.
3. In the memo plan his subjective thinking could not go beyond what he had himself done in post Kargil period. Undeniable evidence of his inviting the Americans to save his government after the Kargil disaster has been printed in the looks of Bill Clinton and Bruce Riedel. Mian Sahib in his reckless state of mind thought that no one has read this established evidence. Much more likely is the fact that Mian Sahib and his advisors being so allergic to books and learning never even knew that such evidence existed and thus he went for the "PANGA" (no other word in any other language can convey the sense).
4. Having been cornered so mischievously by the anti-democratic forces propped up by the ultra Right Wing Media one feels tempted to hit a down the line background through moving an application in the Supreme Court that the Honourable Supreme Court may be pleased to examine the evidence existing in a similar charge against Mian Sahib. However PPP is not doing it and our reasons are simple.
4.1. It is our well considered opinion that 'Politics of Confrontation' is dangerous for the survival of democracy. Come whatever may we are not deviating from our 'Politics of reconciliation' which has resulted in spectacular advances for the forces of democracy.
4.2. If we go into the past there are hundreds of people who can be charged with the violation of Article 6 of the Constitution. Perhaps the judges who validated military takeovers cannot be saved from the abetment charges. With the objective of taking all political forces on board in order to consolidate democracy, why should a politician who has twice held office of Prime Minister become the sole target of Article 6?
4.3. Honourable Supreme Court which was in such hurry in Memo case that they issued orders without even hearing the other side can take sue moto notice of the readily available evidence against Mian Sahiban. While there is hardly any possibility of the Honourable Court taking such a course of action, it is our earnest desire that from this point our movement should be for free, fair elections in which all political parties should freely participate.
