Despite an agricultural country, the Pakistan's food import has shown massive increase of over 72 percent during the first eight months (July-February) of the ongoing financial year against the same period last year.
According to the figures released by Federal Bureau of Statistics , the country spent $3.54 billion on food's import during July-February period of 2010-11 against $2.058 billion in July-February 2009-10, registering an increase of 72.34 percent in one-year period.
According to the break-up, the milk's import went up by 76.35 percent, dry fruit's import by, 7.84 percent, tea's import by 25.42 percent, spices, 63.47 percent, soybean oil, 569.05 percent, palm oil, 59.87 percent, sugar 392 percent, pulses, 89.25 percent and all other food items import enhanced by 33 percent during July-February period.
Meanwhile, the machinery group's imports increased by 0.28 percent during the first eight months of the current fiscal year over the same period last year. While, the imports of transport group went down by 4.52 percent, imports of textile group enhanced by 74.81 percent during July-February period of 2010-11 as compare to same period last year.
On the other hand, the country's textile exports went up by over 28.76 percent during the first eight months (July-February) of the current fiscal year against the same period of previous year. The exports of textile group were recorded at $8.637 billion during July-February 2010-11 against $6.708 billion in the same period in 2009-10 registering a handsome growth of 28.76 percent.
The break-up of textile group shows that in July-February, exports of raw cotton increased by 12.97 percent, cotton yarn, 45.30 percent, cotton cloth, 33 percent, yarn, 15.36 per cent; knitwear, 26.63 percent; bed wear, 16.68 percent; towels, 6.40 percent; readymade garments, 33.67 percent; art silk and synthetic textile, 64.17 percent; made up articles, 18.63 percent; and other textile materials, 39.58 percent.
The exports of food group went up by 18.28 percent. Among these exports, rice went down by 0.07 percent in July-February, fish exports went up by 27.76 percent, fruits 1.21 percent, vegetables exports 49.42 per cent, pulses, 470 percent, tobacco, 178 percent, oil seeds nuts and kernels decreased by 34.44 percent, and meat export enhanced by 51.49 percent.
